Colgate 2025-26

Barb, every year, I do just that. But, this year, I got 30 minutes up the road towards Ogdensburg and then the Syracuse Amtrak station and I realized, ‘Dang! I forgot my ‘Gate jersey!’ Luckily, last week, I had just purchased a $37 Colgate Hockey cap which I did remember to pack. And, yesterday, I wore my custom t-shirt to the game. On the front it read… “Thanks Mike Kemp (Omaha) and Don Vaughan (Colgate) for your service to College Hockey.” I sent a pic of me at the game in it and I received a nice response from Don V. He hasn’t been forgotten.

Arena #156 tonight was Lee’s Family Forum in Henderson, Nev., for some AHL action: San Jose at Henderson. San Jose featured former Clarkson player Noah Beck, while Henderson featured former Omaha player Jaycob Megna. Alaska Mike, Clarkson Doug and Cornell Greg joined me. The final score was 9-6 in favor of the home team.

Frankly, the final was a little less exciting despite a 2-1 score...I though the announcing team was very knowledgeable, but a little willing to extol Denver throughout the game despite, frankly, being outplayed by a decent margin. Denver has a great, great program and certainly deserved the recent wins in 2022 & 2024...last night I thought Wisconsin was on the wrong side of any luck (it does make hockey more intriguing at times vis-a-vis other sports) and easily could've won...as far as losses for both teams? Denver plays in the NCDC which is a a brutal conference, they usually start somewhat slowly, then peak at season's end. Wisconsin started the year on fire, slumped half-way through in part due to injuries (the Big Ten is also very tough and competitive), then rallied at year's end. Two great coaches but I wanted to see Hastings get a championship...he did a great job at Minnesota State for years and has help to resurrect a Wisconsin program that has a great history, but has been somewhat weak in recent years...

It was a crazy game. Denver had 5 SOG through 40 minutes. Their goalie, Johnny Hicks (a.k.a. Johnny Bricks) has been incredible. I wanted Denver ‘cause Ryan Massa is their goalie coach and he was the one that took Omaha to Boston’s Frozen Four (with Jake Guentzel) when I was a UNO season ticket holder. Interestingly enough, Mike Hastings was the assistant/associate coach under Dean Blais and the Omaha heir apparent… until he bolted for Mankato. He built a great program there, but always struggled in the NCAA tournament.

I had a great time with Alaska Mike, Clarkson Doug, Cornell Greg and Dartmouth Doug. I wore my ‘I still dislike Michigan, North Dakota and Cornell’ t-shirt yesterday and it received many positive comments. My Frozen Foursome is already making plans for D.C. next year. Hopefully Colgate can join us.

P.S. - Three new arenas (Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Henderson) in four days was pretty sweet, too.

spot on Shabby...we do have a couple of defensemen coming next year - Sullivan out of the USHL I believe - that looks quite good...we HAVE to upgrade at the forward position...we picked up a 6'6" Swedish kid from UMass after his freshmen year...rated 3.75 by Neutral Zone he was a limited scorer in his last year in junior - USHL #s 9G/9A...maybe a work in progress...Tobias Ohlman looks like the class of the incoming first year forwards...

Sullivan flipped to Dartmouth

They have to change what they're doing because it's not working ! Must be all the "cement heads" think they're going to play NHL...and they don't value what a Gate degree is worth. Western Mich has a strong hockey program but what about their academics ? Like to know what's in Neumeyers head, maybe he made the right decision, I really don't know ?
