Colgate 2025-26

We need to win some games, every weekend you don't know what to expect. These two games in hand could really make a difference, have to win at home. Maybe Harder isn't tough enough on the players, somehow light a match under them !

Andrew Takacs led Colgate out onto the ice for tonight’s contest against NPI#19 Harvard. Ben Charette did the same for Harvard.

Colgate penalty (cross-checking). Killed.

Colgate penalty (interference). Harvard PPG.

Harvard 17, Colgate 6, SOG after one.
Harvard 1, Colgate 0, score after one.

If it weren’t for Andrew Takacs, it would 2 or 3 zip.

2 minutes in, Harvard puts it in after puck hit post and came back out in front.

Harvard’s passing is crisp and clean. Colgate’s not so much.

Colgate had a great opportunity and Ben Charette robbed ‘em. Harvard went down ice and scored easily. They are skating circles around us.

Colgate penalty (cross-checking). Killed.

Harvard penalty (face-mask). Killed.

Harvard 23, Colgate 15, SOG after two.
Harvard 3, Colgate 0, score after two.

14 minutes left to go in the game and the casual fan from New Hartford sitting next to me said, “I just want to see them get a goal.”
That’s basically where we are as a team (and as fans)… ruining an opposing goaltender’s shutout is like a win for us.

Harvard penalty (hooking). Colgate pulls Takacs for extra attacker. Colgate penalty (tripping). Takacs back in goal. Colgate penalty (slashing). All penalties killed.

It may not seem like it, but Andrew Takacs is the reason that it is only 3-0.

Harvard penalty (tripping). Takacs pulled again for extra attacker. Simon LaBelle with the PPG from Isiah Norlin and Michael Neumeier. And Ben Charette’s shutout is ruined.

Harvard penalty (slashing). Takacs pulled for extra attacker. Killed.

1:06 left. 3-1. Takacs pulled. Full strength.

Harvard 34, Colgate 28, SOG final.
Harvard 3, Colgate 1, score final.

No offense of which to speak.
Minimally better defense.
Good goaltending, but they can’t do everything. They need help.

Deer and Amish buggies on the roads going up.
Snow, deer and an Amish buggy on the roads going home. The big snowstorm coming.

We’ll see what tomorrow brings (with the team, the weather and the roads). he he he

I believe in the second half of the first period we were outshot 13-1...unlike Brett Riley (Ferris State) or Eric Lang (RPI) Coach Harder did not inherit a total rebuild situation...in fact, DV left a cupboard that was 60% full...all of DV's recruits will be gone by season's end and, frankly, Harder and his assistants HAVE to improve recruiting at the forward level...so far out two tallest forwards give scant evidence of becoming another Ethan Manderville, who contributed with his hockey knowledge (see his father) and soft hands...I sincerely hope one emerges as an intelligent physical force...Harvard is getting better (perhaps the 9-1 loss to Q-Pac was a wake up call), but, as IBT says we are simply not scoring goals...goaltending is not the problem...next year's recruits do not look (at least at present) overly impressive at the forward level...I think we all hope that changes...

Agreed, we don’t have the scoring this year. Not sure if this can easily be rectified on the portal, but augmenting our next classes is certainly in order if possible. Mike’s style of play is really fun to watch when we score in volume, but a lot more frustrating when we don’t as it’s so vulnerable when they can’t get back to defend.

Turned it off after they scored their third goal, watched Dartmouth lose in OT to you know who ! SLU-Clarkson was fun to watch, good for them.
The Great news is that our longtime supporter CU13 received some wonderful news about her health, way more important, couldn't be happier for her !

all of DV's recruits will be gone by season's end
I don't think so. While the current seniors were freshmen in DV's final year (and the only holdovers from the 2023 ECAC Championship), most of the current juniors and maybe some of the sophomores were almost certainly recruited by Vaughan's staff. Harder is in his 3rd season and I'd say about half of the roster is still Vaughan recruits.

When Seth Appert was the head coach at RPI, it wasn't until his 4th season (2009-10) that the team finally got a winning regular season record. They built on that in 2010-11 after losing Jerry D'Amigo and Brandon Pirri to the pros, both "1 and done" players. I'd give Harder more time, at least until December 2026, to see how we're doing from a won-loss record standpoint.

Reid Dyck led the team onto the ice for ‘Gate tonight. Roan Clarke likely for Dartmouth.

Halfway through the first period…
Dartmouth 9, Colgate 1, SOG.

Shortly thereafter… Jacob Napier is a sniper!! From Jack Brandt and Robby Newton. Two shots, one goal.

Colgate penalty (tripping). Killed.

Max Nagle from Simon LaBelle. Four shots, two goals.

Colgate penalty (cross-checking). All two minutes to be served in second period.

Simon LaBelle’s speed is unreal.

Dartmouth 14, Colgate 4, SOG after one.
Colgate 2, Dartmouth 0, score after one.

‘Gate penalty killed.

Scramble in front of Takacs. Whistle blew. Puck went into ‘Gate net. Call on ice was a goal. Video and audio review. Dartmouth goal. Bad decision in my opinion, and I very rarely challenge officials’ decisions.

Dartmouth penalty (holding). And Simon LaBelle with the PPG from Isiah Norlin and Max Nagle.

Getting very chippy nearly halfway through the game.

Dartmouth penalty. Killed.

Colgate penalty (hooking). Killed.

Colgate penalty (tripping). Killed.

We got another sniper on this team… Robby Newton. From Owen Neuharth and goalie Reid Dyck.

Colgate penalty (roughing). Killed.

Colgate penalty (slashing).
1:26 remaining in the penalty to begin the third period.

Dartmouth 20, Colgate 9, SOG after two.
Colgate 4, Dartmouth 1, score after two.

Colgate penalty killed.

16:49 remaining in third period and Colgate takes its Timeout. Dartmouth has come out loaded for Bear here in the third.

Another beautiful ‘Gate goal. Teamwork!! Ryan Sullivan. From Simon LaBelle and Max Nagel.

4:55 remaining and Dartmouth scored. 5-2.

Dartmouth net empty for extra attacker.
2:31 remaining. 2:23. 2:08. 1:47. 1:40. 0:53.

Dartmouth 39, Colgate 14, SOG final.
Colgate 5, Dartmouth 2, score final.

Rainman...I may be one year off...yes, this year's juniors were DV recruits but, so far, after two years of recruiting the current frosh/soph forwards as a group are less than inspiring (and next year's group doesn't look great - although this could change)...but I get your point...in any event, in the last three games we've scored ONE even strength goal (the empty netter vis-a-vis Princeton is technically "even strength" but not in reality)...let's see if we can do a little better tonight...I'd like to watch past 8:15...

Wow! Wow! Wow!
A much-needed win, for the team and its fans, against a nationally-ranked opponent.
Goaltending was very good as Reid Dyck faced 38 shots.
Defense did well going into the defensive shell in the third period and doing exactly what they needed to do to preserve the lead and gain the win.
Offense was strong, especially with those blistering sniper shots. A great night for Max Nagel, speedy Simon LaBelle and Ryan Sullivan. Five goals, with four at even-strength.
Having said that, winning with 14 SOG total for 60 minutes of play against a top-tier opponent is not going to happen everyday. We need to get that back up to 30 or so.
To their credit, Dartmouth never gave up.
The weakest link tonight? I thought it was the officiating. I try hard not to be a ‘homer’ and I rarely criticize the officials. We have a hard time staying out of the penalty box ourselves. We certainly don’t need them calling weak penalties on us. And don’t get me started on Dartmouth’s first goal.
Next weekend, we travel to two opponents, Brown and Yale, that are ranked below us. We really need to use tonight’s positives, and there were several of ‘em, and build on them to get the road sweep.
Overall, it was a winning night for me. Roads were dry on the 90-minute drive home. No Amish buggies on the road after dark. And only three deer crossed right in front of me… all three crossing Hwy. 38 just .6-miles from my home. he he he

Today's research project...
How important is getting the first goal of the game for Colgate this season?

In non-conference play...
when Colgate scores first, Colgate is 1-3-1; when opponent scores first, Colgate is 2-5-0.

In ECAC Hockey conference play...
when Colgate scores first, Colgate is 5-0-1; when opponent scores first, Colgate is 1-5-0.

in overall play...
when Colgate scores first, Colgate is 6-3-2; when opponent scores first, Colgate is 3-10-0.

This team ... is a riddle ... wrapped in an enigma.
Again.

Thank goodness we salvaged a split each of the last 2 weekends - I want to know what weed the ECAC schedule makers were huffing when they put together this season's block schedule: we play 7 of our next 8 on the road, all conference games. This includes 5 road league games in a row in February.

While Cornell is in a similar situation having a "mirror" of our league schedule, they get the benefit of playing on the road first in our upcoming home-and-home with them. Dartmouth also has 5 road league games in a row - the schedule makers but Colgate/Cornell and Harvard/Dartmouth on the road in back-to-back weekends, why? Harvard gets a bit of a break because they participate in the Beanpot. But with the playoff format single elimination before best-of-3 (ridiculous), home and road games down the stretch should be equal. The final league weekend of the season (Feb 27-28) could have been swapped with the 2nd to last league weekend (Feb 20-21) to balance things out.

Shabby, yes, that is me. he he he
I love those in my row under John McGraw…
R. Braden & Judith “Chipper” Houston,
Dale & Stacie and Brad & Lisa from Earlville, and
Ron Hoham.
Just a great group of ‘Gate fanatics.

Shabby, your comment reminds me of my feelings after following Colgate to the Friendship Four tourney a couple of years ago.
By posting on here, I thought I 'knew' all of Colgate's men's hockey followers. But in reality, I only 'knew' one subset.
The trip introduced me to a whole different subset, most of whom I rarely see at the 'Gate games.
My seat mates are all season ticketholders. I don't know the Earlville couples well, but Ron Hoham taught Biology at Colgate.
Like Brad Houston, he loves to hike and photograph in the Adirondacks.
