Colgate 2025-26

I’ve been waiting a long time for this type of win (a ranked non-conf opponent on the road on the first night) would be curious to see the last time that happened. Looking at you Iowa lol. Seriously great win on the first night. Colgate took advantage of their opportunities and got some puck luck, big win for Clarkson as well vs NoDak.

Still an MT net… let me drive home through the autumnal beauty of the White Mountains, the Green Mountains and the Adirondack Mountains tomorrow and hopefully I will have an answer to you on Monday. he he he

Three post-game press conference interviews…

For me, it is a similar feeling to tying BU in Boston… coming to Orono and winning on Friday and then taking them to OT (before ultimately losing).

Alford Arena was rockin’ again tonight. Last night, I was away from the ice in section NN (upper bowl). But tonight I was in section M (lower bowl) and there was a lot of chirping going on from kids and veteran season ticket holders alike. So, I couldn’t keep up with all the penalties. But, again, both teams took way too many penalties tonight.

When I was at Omaha, Dean Blais would ride one pony until he broke. Then he’d play his back-up goalie. When I came to Colgate, Don Vaughan seemed to have a similar strategy. I always thought rotating goalies was a better strategy. It appears that is Mike Harder’s strategy this early season. Maybe it will change when conference play begins. But, for now, it seems to be working for Colgate. Andrew Takacs played well tonight.

Overall, I don’t know how you can be disappointed with our performance this weekend in Orono. Go ‘Gate!

P.S. - NCAA Percentage Index (NPI) is the new PairWise Ranking (PWR). Early in the season, the rankings can change wildly. But, as more games are played, the ranking swings become less wild. Entering this weekend, Maine was NPI#20 and Colgate was NPI#38. After last night’s upset win on the road, Colgate was NPI#27 and Maine was NPI#43. It will be interesting for me to see what tonight’s result (OT loss to Maine on the road) will do for Colgate’s NPI ranking.

Surprised Dyck isn't starting for you guys tonight. Here's to a good game good luck
Andrew Takacs (who is a senior) was our primary starter last season. Reid Dyck is a freshman this season.

But the two have equally split the goaltending duties so far. If both continue to play well, great for us, we have 2 capable goaltenders. With Dyck having NHL draft status, maybe he's our #1 netminder for 2026-29 (barring any early departure).

As for last night - Michael Neumeier lost his stick early on into OT, tried to kick the puck over the blue line only to kick it backwards and keep it in our defensive zone, resulting in Maine's OT goal. Tough way to end a game where we never trailed and lost, but we still got a road split.

We're 1-2-1 so far in our OOC "gauntlet" against BU, Maine, and Michigan State (all on the road). So far we've shown that we can skate with the top ranked teams.

Nice quality win last night, do it again tonight for a special weekend. Are we still happy with a split on the road ? I bet Takacs plays tonight, two PP goals looks very good on the box score !

It was might look like a good split for both teams, Shabby, as far as the metrics down the road.

Maine ain't all that at this point, but them coming back to salvage a split (at home) wasn't so bad. 'Gate is a very solid team- they looked to me to be on par with the Q, and other Maine posters thought the same.

The biggest thing that both fan-bases have in common is a genuine hatred for Cornell. I'm going to shop for tickets, but I don't expect to see any availability.

Well, saen, you have waited awhile (prior to Friday's 3-2 win at #10 Maine in Orono)...

On Friday-Saturday, October 18-19, 2019, Colgate traveled to Lowell, Mass., to play #18 UMass Lowell.
Colgate beat UML, 4-3, in OverTime on Friday night.
The next night, the two teams played to a scoreless tie after OT.
I was there that weekend (and got a cheap complimentary UMass Lowell jersey one of those nights, if I remember right).

Prior to that Friday night win at a ranked non-conference opponent's arena...

On Friday-Saturday, October 10-11, 2014, Colgate traveled to Saint Cloud, Minn., to play #6/7 Saint Cloud State.
Colgate beat SCSU, 3-1, on Friday night.
Colgate lost, 1-3, to SCSU the next night.

More random thoughts from the weekend...

On Thursday, Clarkson Doug and I went to Cornwall, Ont., for a CCHL Junior 'A' game... Hawkesbury at Cornwall. The Ed Lumley Arena was #150 for me. Cornwall's coach is Grant Cooper, who played four years at Clarkson (2017-21) after five years with his hometown Cornwall (2012-17). After Clarkson, he played for Reading, Penna., of the ECHL in 2021-22, which is the same year that my friend Dartmouth Doug's son Cam played at Reading.

On Friday, at Alfond Sports Arena in Orono, Me., Mike Harder stopped and visited briefly with me, during his usual pre-game arena walk. He continues to be very down-to-earth and open. On both Friday and Saturday, Alfond was listed as 'sold out,' which apparently is 4,980. It was definitely rockin' both nights.

On Sunday afternoon, on my way home, I watched D-3 Norwich University play an exhibition game at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Admission was free at Thompson Arena, which is good as it was not competitive college hockey with Dartmouth winning 6-0. But it was a good break from driving the backroads, and I texted Dartmouth Cam a picture of the arena's brand-new Jumbotron.

Finally, I realize that the new NCAA Percentage Index will change a million times between now and the 16-team Tournament Selection Show. Still, I would rather follow it than the subjective polls. Here is how Colgate and its 11 ECAC and 6 non-conference opponents are NPI ranked today, with their current records. It gets more real this weekend as the Ivies begin their official seasons.

NCAA Percentage Index (NPI) – Colgate & 2025-26 Opponents, as of October 27:

#7 Michigan State, 5-1-0
#10 Union, 4-0-1
#15 Quinnipiac, 5-2-1

#18 Boston University, 3-3-1
#26 Colgate, 2-3-1
#28 Canisius, 5-4-0
#33 Maine, 3-2-1
#34 New Hampshire, 2-3-0

#35 Brown, 0-0-0
#36 Cornell, 0-0-0
#37 Dartmouth, 0-0-0
#38 Harvard, 0-0-0
#39 Princeton, 0-0-0
#40 Yale, 0-0-0

#41 RIT, 3-2-0
#45 Clarkson, 2-4-0
#60 Saint Lawrence, 1-5-0
#61 RPI, 0-6-0
