Colgate 2024-25 Harder Hockey

All interesting comments...been down in HHI for several weeks, but stayed informed as best I could...I frankly doubted we would beat Cornell (for previously stated reasons) but not for the lack of trying, especially in game #2. A good, but not great season. Over two years we've gone 26-14-4 in league play and, including the two QF losses to SLU, then Cornell, only 8-17-3 out-of-conference. Our OOC play has been subpar for years, probably reflecting the relative weakness of the league in general, but that has to improve. Re: Vaughn and Harder: styles of play are certainly different and DV was a 55% winning coach through 2007-08. Harder's approach in today's world may be a help in recruiting (plus two good assistants), especially in pursuit of defensemen. The lack of offense in DV's second half of his career was quite evident, most notably in Colton Point's off-the-charts sophomore season where we finished at .500. Tim Taylor, Bob Daniels and DV are examples of good coaches early on who faded as they approached years 15 to 20. Riley was IMO a logical candidate to replace DV but Mike seems to bring real enthusiasm to the program. Not sure about RPI and Riley, but wouldn't be surprised if he favored Ferris State more flexible approach (i.e., a more receptive administration) than RPI's. I hope Lang lands somewhere and RPI would be a logical choice. He did a remarkable job at AIC. A little worried about the talent level of our incoming forwards and maybe we can find another Chorske in the transfer pool. Nonetheless, junior numbers and rankings are quite subjective. McMann was ranked only 3.75 out of 5.00 by the Neutral Zone coming out of Alberta. He is now a valuable second line member of the Leafs with a plus 10 and 20 goals. One final note: the two most highly regarded underclassman to "leave early" (Alex Young and Ryan McGuire) saw their numbers drop significantly when they up and went to Arizona State and NE, respectively. I've enjoyed the thread a lot this year; comments have been objective, informed, temperate (even me)...thanks for including yours truly

Greencoat - it’s funny you mentioned Colton Point. I was thinking of him the other day to see if he was still playing. Looks like he last played in 2023 for Fort Wayne in the ECHL. Anyway in his sophomore year at Colgate (his final year) he was 16-12-5 with a 1.74 GAA, a .944 save % and had 6 shutouts. Amazing numbers. Shabby says we have a good goalie coming next year. Takacs did a nice job but we’ll see if the new guy is better.

Cornell's Dalton Bancroft is leaving school early, and signing a contract with the NHL team I root for - the Boston Bruins! Double win for me!

Not a Colgate fan, but I want to thank the Colgate program for helping turn Bobby McMann into the beast he has become for the Leafs! Thanks!

Two intriguing pickups by Harder and his able assistants...Reid Dyck of the Swift Current Broncos, a goalie drafted in the sixth round by the Bruins AND Isaiah Norlin, a Univ of Nebraska-Omaha defenseman, formerly at West Kelowna (BCHL)...a freshman at a crowded position for UNO last season, he was a high scoring D-man at 6'6", 197 pounds...they are doing their homework...great to see McMann evolve as an important piece to the Leafs...

This is Dyck’s last WHL game from the other day. He played great. I was very impressed when he anticipated and saved that Michigan attempt. He also had a boat load of other good saves.

Great to see Gate reloading (I'm a Raider fan --unless they are playing RPI) LOL Dyck is a big fella as well -- 6'4 195. Gonna fill a lot of net.

Well, another Frozen Four is in the books.
Thursday’s first game was a weird one (Western Michigan over Denver), while the nightcap was lackluster (Boston Univ. over Penn State). Tonight’s championship game was a good one (WMU over BU), despite it ultimately being a blowout.

NCHC remains the premier conference.

All three Saint Louis (Mo.) Frozen Fours were won my teams from the state of Michigan.

Western Michigan… first Frozen Four, first National Championship.

Midwest over East in the title game.

I did not see any other Colgate apparel at the games, though ironically I stood behind two Cornell fans in the beer line at a concert on Friday night at the National Blues Museum.

Saint Louis, once again, was a great host city and Vermont was a great host institution. I was joined by Alaska Mike, Clarkson Doug, Dartmouth Doug and the Iowa Wild couple of Larry & Kelly. I got Colby Cohen to autograph a 2009 Washington, D.C., Frozen Four cap tonight, as he scored the OT winner for BU over Miami (Ohio). This trip, we stopped at Miami in Oxford, Ohio, on the way out (to see their rink named after Madrid, N.Y.’s Steve Cady) and at Lindenwood’s rink in Maryland Heights, Mo. It is now on to Lost Wages next year, April 9 and 11, after another season of ‘Gate hockey.

Iowa, glad you had a good time at the Frozen 4. While I was happy for WMU for winning their 1st championship, I couldn’t help but think Denver might have been the best team. But I guess they didn’t get their game together until the 3rd period on Thursday and by then it was too late.

Yes the NCHC is strong but Hockey East had a a lot of good teams this year. They almost got 3 teams in the FF. And Cornell came within OT of getting to the FF. So I’m wondering where Colgate stands in all this. Those OOC games really matter.

We could have had an all-Hockey East Frozen Four this year 😲

Hockey East could have had 3 or all 4 teams in the Frozen Four this year, but they didn’t.
Heck, Atlantic Hockey America could have had 3 or all 4 teams in the Frozen Four this year, but they didn’t either. he he he

Since the NCHC and Big Ten were both formed in 2013-14, the National Champions have come from…

NCHC - 7 times,
ECAC - 2 times,
Hockey East - 2 times,
Big Ten - 0 times,
CCHA - 0 times,
Atlantic Hockey America - 0 times,
Independents - 0 times.

NCHC remains the premier conference.
