Colgate 2021-22

Watching the game, I can’t help but think what the WMU team is thinking/feeling about a very small crowd at Riggs. Great first period for ‘Gate!

WMU 19, Colgate 6, SOG after one.
Colgate 2, WMU 0, score after one.

We are relying on Carter Gylander way too much, obviously. Western Michigan players are big and fast, with great puck-handling skills. Three Colgate penalties, I believe, compared to one for Western Michigan.

Six minutes in penalties will catch up to us eventually ! We're on pp for roughly 90 secs starting period two.

Shabby, first off the crowd is filling in. And the last Colgate penalty was ticky tack. If they call that all nights it’s gonna be 40 min of special teams all arounf

Manderville the third ‘Gate goal, with Verboon the fourth. Alex Young the fifth Colgate goal. All three were PPGs. WMU started their comeback.

WMU 31, Colgate 18, SOG after two.
Colgate 5, WMU 2, after two.

Can you sit on a 5-2 lead against PWR #1 for twenty minutes? We will find out.
Now 5-3.

Apparently tomorrow’s game is a 5 p.m. start.

Now 5-4 with seven minutes left.
Now tied at 5 with a full five minutes left.
Make that WMU 6-5 lead with one minute left.
Sometimes in life, you reap what you sow.

WMU 53, Colgate 24, final SOG.
WMU 6, Colgate 5, final score.

I'll ask again...how's that change in philosophy entering the third period working? The old 1-2-2? The problem with coaches that have been around forever? Perhaps they are too set in their ways...perhaps the 2X4 hitting the head evokes no response...I've said it and I'll say it again: let the kids play 60 minutes of hockey instead of forcing them to sit back on their heels and be dominated in their own end for 20 minutes...JC...enough is enough...

Tomorrow will determine if Vaughn needs to go or not. After that type of loss, does the team come out pissed off and ready to battle or licking their wounds. If he doesn’t get them fired up it may be time at the end of the season

It is obvious, or should be obvious to anyone with half a brain, that these kids do not feel comfortable playing this system with a lead in the third period...smart coaches adjust, losing coaches continue to fit the square peg in a hole...tonight was simply awful/inexcusable and, especially after several disastrous third periods coming into tonight, the buck stops at the feet of the coach...we're 5-3 and could easily be 8-0 with a team that possesses (finally) both some speed and skill...

Tomorrow? Please, he’s had 28 years of tomorrows.

What a great game by the Broncos. Hats off to them for an inspiring game. Gylander is a sieve and we were grossly outshot again. Hard to understand those who think we have turned the corner after witnessing this embarrassing debacle.

It’s still early in the season, but that’s TWO “third period leads AT HOME turned regulation losses”. This is a SERIOUS cause for concern.

For the past 3 seasons we struggled to score goals. 5 goals should win you a hockey game. I don’t care if we were playing one of the top teams - this has “backbreaker-loss” written all over it.

A sieve? Really? I'm not sure I've seen a lot of sieves make 47 saves in a game. I'm not sure what you watched, and quite frankly I'm not sure you are either, but of all of the problems this team had tonight, especially in the 3rd period, Carter Gylander barely makes the list.

Look we are all upset but to call out players by name, especially when he has been one players all year. They are playing their best they gripped the sticks too tight in the third. The killer were the two goals in the second, really got them back in it. Sometimes it seems like some people want to see the team fail so that they have a reason to call for the firing of Vaughn which would be ridiculous.

This was the worst loss in a long long time. Blowing a 5 goal lead at home is just brutal. This win could have propelled the season over a legit NCHC ranked team going forward into league play. Even if they won 5-3 tonight or something and then lost tomorrow night we would still be fine going forward. Now we have a must win tomorrow or this one game just may define the season.

90-minute ride home to stew on it... and I did...
First, I agree wholeheartedly with Joe McGrath... Carter Gylander is not the reason for tonight’s loss. Period. Our defense is our weak link this season. There is no way they should allow that many shots on our goalie.
Second, if our defensive skills aren’t up to snuff, then trying to rely on them solely for a full twenty minutes doesn’t make a lot of strategic sense.
Third, Shabby said that we’d know where we stand after the Western Michigan series. It’s not over, but I think I do know where we stand. I have given up on seeing Colgate compete in the Frozen Four in Boston this year. And knowing that WMU is not historically at the top of the NCHC heap, I am quickly giving up on seeing ‘Gate in a Regional this season. That being said, our 5-3 record thus far still gives me hope that we can compete in the ECAC for a spot at Lake Placid in 2022. Clarkson went down to Michigan Tech tonight, at home; in fact, it was a shutout. They’ve tied Canisius and lost once to Fairbanks, who took Cornell, at Lynah, to OT tonight. I am not ready to throw the baby out with the bath water just yet.
Finally, I don’t expect to win tomorrow. The skill level differential between the two teams is just too great. We might have lucked out tonight to have 12 shots equate to 5 goals in a winning performance, but we didn’t. Maybe the lesson is that, if we are going to try to sit on a lead against a top-notch team for a period or more, we should have a 7-0 lead built up first. Otherwise, don’t even attempt that strategy.

P.S. - I am wicked thankful for the Young brothers tonight.

call it whatever you want - going from a 2-1-2 to a 1-2-2, whatever - our third periods this year, especially with the lead, have been simply awful and it has to be fixed...I think we surprised WMU early on with our speed and skill...when you sit back and get too defensive you cede to them their biggest advantage over us, i.e., their size and ability to grind us to death in our zone...we've got four good lines and depth on defense...yes, we had bad coverage in our defensive zone, but we spent 80% of the period defending...Gylander was fine, got some bad bounces, especially the last goal, but a team becomes exhausted by defending much more so than attacking...we did virtually none of the latter over the last 20 minutes...we're better than that PERIOD...
