Colgate 2017-2018

Re: Colgate 2017-2018

A Fork in the road this weekend in the North Country.

Colgate is in the third year of a major performance turnaround, accompanied by the opening of the new $ 38 mill. arena and increasing success in recruiting top student-athletes within and outside North America. What has been proven to this point is that they belong in the 4 to 6 team cluster that makes up the upper half of the ECAC. They've been projected as # 4 in the ECAC pre-season poll. To gain elite status, however, the Raiders will have to start routinely beating some of the teams that they're not expected to beat. This weekend in the North Country is such an opportunity.

A split this weekend is both a realistic and desired outcome, from my perspective. Knocking off the defending National Champion, # 2 Clarkson on Friday night is probably a bit of a stretch for the #5 Raiders right now, imho.. But, playing them very tough Friday night may get the Raiders' blood pumping and spirits rising high enough that come Saturday they could knock off # 7 St. Lawrence ( this week, tied with # 7 Northeastern ).

What more could you ask for....on the road in the North Country as the #5 ranked team in the country ( and # 1 in Pairwise and the R.P.I. ) ???

A sweep? ;) If you're going to ask, then you may as well ask for what you really want. The hockey gods can always say, "No."

I agree with your positive affirmation, ARM. In addition to Clarkson and St. Lawrence this weekend, Colgate plays Princeton and Quinnipiac at home the following weekend. These four opponents ( plus Cornell ) represent the teams, along with 'gate, that comprised that upper echelon of the ECAC last year. Colgate was having a great year beating the ones they should. But, just couldn't crack these elite teams. I've chronicled this 3 year turnaround via the Colgate sports board ( link below ). I had a sixth sense, that rhis turnaround had legs,...so I compulsively documented the progress week by week. ( I've never done anything like the before. ) So, despite sharing your positive affirmation about the sweep, I've become a dilettante and am very cautious in plotting how, step-by-step, Colgate gets to the next level this year. A sweep will be nice. A split on the road with these guys will suffice. A goose egg will throw my forecasting off.

Check out the three year turnaround.

THE TURNAROUND OF THE COLGATE WOMEN'S HOCKEY PROGRAM

I started chronicling the turnaround of this team on Dec. 20, 2015 on the Colgate Sports Board. Because of the youth of this team, I just kept chronicling it based on my feeling that the best was yet to come. Still feel that way. :)

They just mentioned the Colgate turnaround in the broadcast of the UNH @ NU game. Your ladies are definitely turning some heads nationally. Hopefully they'll wait until Saturday to make their national statement. :D

Re: Colgate 2017-2018

And a beautiful win it was! They played with complete confidence while getting stronger as the game went on. We have to be sure not to let down tomorrow night and the reward will be our
highest ranking ever on Monday.:)

Re: Colgate 2017-2018

Important 2-0 shutout tonight against long time nemesis Princeton. Hopefully this will clear our heads going forward as we now know we can beat them and if them anyone. Vandyk was fantastic at the end. Don't know how she preserved the shutout!:)

Another convincing win on Sat vs. Quin (4-1)....as I commented earlier in the thread, getting through October and the 1st weekend in November would tell the early story about this team. Although there is a lot of hockey left in the season, Gate has to be thrilled at this start...with an Ohio State beat down by Wisc. on Saturday, a 4th place ranking should be in the cards come Monday...even if Ohio State keeps today close, Saturday's game shows that Ohio State still has some work to do to be in the top 5. Go Gate!

# 3 ( 2 PWR ) 11-1-0 'gate sweeps UNH; will take to the road against Yale and Brown

One concern I have right now is how the women seem energy-drained in their 2nd games on the road.
This was especially the case at St. Lawrence two weekends ago, where they had a major upset of Clarkson in a 6 PM Friday night game. But registered their sole loss ytd at a 3 PM afternoon tilt at St. Lawrence on Saturday. That was a tough/short reboot off of a spectacular high. The ladies looked low energy compared to a charged up St. Lawrence team rebounding off of a defeat by Cornell the night before

As with the St. Lawrence game, the ladies looked a little low energy this Saturday after knocking off UNH 7-1 on Friday night.
After suffering their first home loss of the year to 'gate, UNH came out at full energy on Saturday. The sign of really good teams is that they find ways to win. Though being tied 1-1 through most of the game, late in the 3rd period, 'gate found a way to beat UNH 2-1.
.
'Gate replaced Clarkson at #3 in the Nov.12rh USCHO poll after Clarkson's loss to Vermont on Friday night. Gate remains at #2 in the PWR behind 16-0-0 Wisconsin.

You're dead on RA and it is a concern against good teams. Not sure why, but we seem to come out with less focus and energy on the second night and really never are able to get into the flow with the same sense of urgency we had the night before. With the same team scenario like this weekend it's sort of understandable as you just beat them easily so maybe you're overconfident but against SLU they should have been sharper. It's also very obvious so I'm sure the coach and all the players are looking for a solution. If we can just keep it going through the season and into the playoffs the extra day we'll get between games then should be very helpful. That said we are #3 in the country. That's a very big deal. This is one hell of a team and right now when fresh in a one game winner take all format could win against anyone! The Cornell series at the beginning of December should be very interesting. They gave Wisconsin a battle this weekend especially on Sat night. Maybe even Wisconsin can't play at the highest level 2 nights back to back:)

# 2 ( 2 PWR, 13-1 ) 'gate WIH sweeps Yale & Brown, heads to Windjammer Classic @ Vermont over TG wkend

"Feels like a #2 ranking tomorrow..." was prophetic by go'gate, reflecting a potential swapping of places with #2 Boston College. BC, now 10-1-2, gave up a tie to Conn. over the weekend. I thought the move to the #2 spot would likely follow a potential sweep of Cornell Dec. 1 & 2.

I hope the Cornell series doesn't distract 'gate from the serious business in front of it at the Windjammer Classic against Minnesota Duluth on Friday and the winner of the Vermont/RIT game on Saturday. I still have a slight concern about 'gate's sluggishness in its 2nd games on weekends. Other than that, no complaints......isn't this a blast ?
