Colgate 2017-18

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Still undefeated - I'll take it!

Yep. Had a couple of great chances in the 5 on 3 to start overtime that just missed, but overcoming a 2-0 deficit plus all the penalties (and without two of our top forwards for most of the game) makes this a good tie. Point looked great again, confidence should be building!

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Probably a microcosm of this season, low scoring, different players scoring every game and Colton Point. It all starts in goal and he is very very impressive, especially like the way he smothers shots with no rebounds. I think we go as far as he takes us !

Re: Colgate 2017-18

In addition it's good to see Nick Austin with two goals. He may be the go-to guy on that line - has a blistering shot. What a nice drop pass from Willie Brooks to set up Austin for the second goal. Who'd a thunk, 2-0-1 after three games? Point is playing great; the naysayers may have to take back that last place prediction (media/coaches) for this team. The frosh are making a statement with their play. Great to see a D-man score but we need some forwards to light the lamp as well.

After being hosed by Lehigh in FB it's good to get the tie last night and have a "successful" hockey showing. Gotta stop the game misconducts going forward. It only gets harder and more competitive from here on out.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

So my thoughts from the first three games...

1. The freshman are better than expected. They have played good defense, have put the puck in the net and have melded well with the sophmores.

2. The close range defense on loose pucks near the crease has been outstanding. Up to this point I dont think we have been beat to a loose puck in front of Point.

3. The overall product is so much better than last year. We have some good speed which could be a help next week on the big sheet.

4. Point has been solid, with very few missed plays, EXCEPT coming out of the net on icings which negates them!

Overall we can all be happy and proud about how they have performed up to this point.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

I wondered why frosh Quillan hasn't suited up? Highly recruited with Cosgrove, guess he put his arm thru glass and was cut very badly. He'll help too.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Can't underestimate these wins/ties when it comes playoff time because all games are interwoven through PWR, even at this early stage. Short roster and we gutted it out. Third period looked like desperate hockey both nights. Staying out of the sin bin is obvious, yet...

We may get a reality check this weekend. Point will need to stand taller. And wider. These tests against upper-HE foes seldom go in our favor, would love a split. UNH came back from behind both games last w/e; another sign we can't fade early and must play a full 60.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Now, that's what I'm talkin' about! Even a split against any of these OOC teams impacts our postseason fate down the road.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Got to see this year's team for the first time on Saturday, and so far, I'm impressed. Much better defensive play, no bad turnovers, and the team put in a full effort. We did get a bit sloppy late in the 1st period, which lead to Merrimack's two goals, but give credit to the team for battling back and eventually getting the tie. Although we had a golden opportunity to win it early in OT. Looks like it's still goal scoring by committee for now. Congrats to Nick Austin on his first 2 career goals, and Colton Point has been outstanding in net so far.

I'll be making the trip up to UNH this Friday, and will get another look at this team. So far, things are trending in the right direction.

Absolutely, we own the PWR comparison with Merrimack, wonder when the last time was we owned a Hockey East comparison.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Trivia...Sidney Crosby's sister was the backup goalie for the St Cloud Huskies women's team that we decimated over the weekend.

I totally agree with TchrBill... the Pairwise Ranking (PWR) is what it is all about... all season long. I don't even look at the polls anymore; they are subjective and meaningless.
Non-conference games are important to Colgate, and to the ECACHL as a whole, in the PWR algorithm. Clarkson's sweep of the Big Ten teams last week was huge (for them and the league).
Having said that, two years ago (following their Frozen Four appearance three years ago), UNO went 10-0-0 in non-conference play.
But they still failed to make the NCAA tourney that year as they didn't take care of business in NCHC league play (vs. North Dakota, Denver, Minnesota - Duluth, Saint Cloud State, etc.).
I am also driving up to Durham, New Hampshire, for both games this weekend. Realistically, a split on the road against Dick Umile's team would be a real achievement.
Go 'gate.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Hey 'Gate fans welcome to the 'Whitt this weekend looking forward to seeing the two teams compete!! Let us know if you're looking for pre game ideas; Durham doesn't have a ton of places but Libby's is one on the Main Street; get there early!

Thanks Ref, but UNH is a bridge too far. Hopefully some other rabid fans will make the trip.

CHN preview of the ECAC has us at #12. We might surprise some folks ::)

I can vouch for Libby's, was in there before and after the football playoff game a couple years back. Excellent bar, food pretty good, UNH fans though disappointed couldn't have been any nicer. Check it out!
