Colgate 2017-18

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Maybe I’m just drinking the koolaid and enjoying a season in which we were supposed to be horrid but our GAA is 2.16 and GPG is 2.19. Any time your GAA is lower than you GPG you should be at or around 500 at minimum and look where we are.

I mean it really doesn’t matter if we are at 5GPG and 5GAA, it results in the same outcome. Now yes having scoring so low makes each goal so important but that is how we are playing this year and we are 500 when we were expecting to be well below. This defensive game was cornell’s Bread and butter for YEARS

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Another measuring device I use is PPG scored and PPG scored against us. We are averaging 14.89 % on our powerplay and killing about 83% totaling 98%. A proficient team totals over 100%, a great team is about 110 or better. We're so so but not good, like our record. Again our anemic offense hurts us.

Clarkson is 112.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

It was just announced that the Colgate AD Vicky Chun is moving over to Yale. How has her history been concerning the mens hockey program at Colgate?

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Chun leaving is a HUGE hit for us. She’s a Colgate alum and was a MUCH better AD than Dave Roach was.

Meanwhile, getting back to hockey, we don’t travel out of NY state the rest of the regular season. This should bode wel for us. Also, if we can finish top-4, we could stay in NY state through St. Patrick’s Day!

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Does anyone think this is an opening for DV to jump into the Athletic Director position?

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Huge weekend, two wins and we're right back in the thick of things for top four. Need some goals, who will it be ?

I thought about that too. We announced & went through a national search before promoting Vicky from within, so there is precedent. No idea if DV would want the job.

To answer LSatch's original question, Vicky was hugely supportive of men's hockey & was a full supporter of the drive to build the new arena. She is also very close to DV, and I think it would have been very hard for her to address his future if pressure started to build for a coaching change. So from a hockey point of view, she was great for the program... but this might also be the best time for her to leave if we're going to move in a new direction.

There were most likely other considerations beyond the DV situation that prompted Vicky to leave. This might have been one issue on the table but I would surmise there were many reasons to move on, the most important being the opportunity to move up to the Yale program and the offer they made to her.

Back to hockey: I would hope we can get 4 points this weekend, but would be satisfied with three. Union will be a battle; if Point is in the zone like last weekend it’s entirely possible we could sweep the Capital District teams.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Question...why isn't Jared Cockrell on the ice tonight? I know he hasn't scored recently, but, JC, beggars can't be choosers when it comes to Colgate scoring goals...

Of course. My speculation on her relationship with DV is a sidenote, good luck to Vicky & hope she goes from Yale to bigger & even better things.

Meanwhile, halfway home on the weekend! Nice game by Point, and on to Union...

Re: Colgate 2017-18

What is it with Don Vaughan screaming at the officials lately? He did it again in the first period.
Hasn't anyone ever told him that it isn't very AD-like?
Has he always been a screamer?

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Iowa, it is actually a nice change for him. Makes me think he cares (yes he always has cared) but we have been behind the bench a few times at the away game at Cornell and in those games he barely talked to the team or anyone. So seeing emotion tonight was a good feeling. Makes me feel like the team is coming together

Tonight's game is crucial in the battle for a first round bye, can Colton keep his streak going ? Not sure why Cockrell sat, if Henry Marshall was his replacement Don made a great move.

Anyone notice McMann sleepwalking out there, what has happened to him ? Good performance by team last night, beat Union, they are tougher than RPI.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

Congrats to 'Gate & Point...and this site still sucks.
Anyone else click on a box score, only to find 2 different teams with the wrong rosters and score? This happens to me ALL of the time; ColgateW game today v. Harvard showed them up 2-0 after 1 (lie), only to find the box score displaying Robert Morris. Ticker tape on main page posts games in progress with a score, only to find that the game hasn't even started. Refresh the page, and the score is different altogether. And the site is still a bland, ugly eyesore!

Tough game v. Union tonight; more special teams magic would be nice.

Re: Colgate 2017-18

If you were an elite scorer in junior hockey what possible reason would you ever want to matriculate to Colgate to play hockey? To play on a team that averages 2 goals/game, a rate that has been bad - and getting worse - for many many years? People questioned Bill Torrey when he drafted a skinny, goal-scoring kid in the first round (15th I think) back in the very early 1980s...he answered that he could always teach the kid to play defense; you can't teach a kid to be a scorer. The young man's name was Mike Bossy. Not only are we consistently mediocre, even with goalie with a save percentage near 95%, we are boring as well...now normally that wouldn't bother me...winning is winning...but, looking to the future (and I don't see any Brett Hulls arriving in Hamilton next year as well) the type of hockey we play is simply not going to attract many David McIntires, Austin Smiths, or even Bobby McManns...
