Re: Colgate 2014-15

Just my opinion...The team looked better tonight than they have in awhile. Speed was quick, breakout and transition was good. They controlled the puck and worked around the offesive zone nicely. Not sure where this style of play had been all year. Not sure if it was due to playing a union group that has fallen on hard times or if we are truly making a legitimate push for the playoffs. Tomorrow night will tell. No dumb penalties. Let's go boys!

We are finally getting healthy, we had two or three of our top forwards out most of the year. The lines were all scrambled, Goulakis will be back soon, we're loading up. This is the best we've been since early October. Need a little payback tonight, RPI always seems give us trouble.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Sweet win! The first period saved us and we must do the same tonight. Not sure we are a strong come-from-behind team. Thought the Dutchmen played well but were snakebitten, and they totally outshot us in the 3rd. Taking penalties while on the pp is insane and our pp did not look sharp at all. Have been saying all year that Finn skates around and about way too much. Had that fluke goal counted...
Hope we can earn the season split against the Engineers on Senior Night!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

My only complaint is that Spiro didn't get to play tonight, even though he did dress for the pregame senior ceremony. But it's a 4-point weekend, and we've won 3 in a row. And we finally beat RPI for the first time since Feb. 2012.

As I'm typing this, NBCSN is doing a live report from Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, as part of the 35th Anniversary of the Miracle on Ice. Hopefully we'll be playing there again in 4 weeks.

Very impressed by Lough and Johnston tonight. They both played great, up tempo games and took over the game at times. Team is playing more and more like a playoff group. Hope Spiro can maybe make an appearance next weekend and be fully recovered in time for the post-season. Keep hoping!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Union and RPI are nothing like their records indicate. They have so much talent...just a tremendous weekend sweep for Colgate, especially for the seniors. My complaint, Rain, are the ridiculous penalties WE initiated after the whistle. RPIs 4x4 goal happened for that exact reason. At least 2 more games at Starr...now go take down Yale.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Well we have seen a new 'gate team the last few games, I hope it's not too late. The team is skating faster and passing better which is creating more scoring opportunities. We have a chance of getting a bye but we have a tough road swing ahead of us. Obviously we have Yale Friday which we absolutely must win to not only increase our odds for the bye but for the pairwise as well. Also, it would be nice to be ranked 17 or lower in the pairwise if we were to make it to Placid so that we may only need one win there. Then, we go to Brown who has been playing well as of late and is 4-1-2 over their last 7 games. This is a game that can't be overlooked and I am glad it is the second night. Harvard has Quinny on Friday so we will be Q-pac fans for the night. We also should be cheering for BU and BC in the beanpot tomorrow so that NE and Harvard fall in the ranks.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

In order to control our own destiny we only have to pay attention to two games on Friday: ours and QU/Harvard.

The best thing for us is that QU is still on the pairwise bubble so they will be playing harvard tough even though they have the cleary locked up

Re: Colgate 2014-15

QU is a lock right now, they are 10th in the PWR. Yale is on the bubble at #15. Harvard is the odd man out at #16 in favor of RMU.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Two losses by QU this weekend has the possibility of putting it on the bubble.

Anyways, if we win on Friday we would be guaranteed a bye if we get one more point than yale on Saturday (even if we tie darthmouth we have the tie break).

We win on Friday AND a harvard loss, we are in with a tie.
We win Friday AND Harvard Tie, we are in with a win
We win AND harvard win: we have to watch Harvard's game (need one more point than them)
We lose and Harvard loses (there are too many possibilities including Dartmouth and Cornell.
We tie and a Harvard loss: we are in with a win
We tie and Harvard tie same situation as a win, win.

if I messed up any situations please post them

Re: Colgate 2014-15

red133883, all of the scenarios you posted are correct. Bottom line is, we do NOT control our own destiny with a bye, which is rather unfortunate since according to this post from the RPI blog Without a Peer, 25 points is usually enough for a bye, and we could miss it with 27 points. Oddly enough, we could still get the bye with 1 point this weekend, but it would require Harvard to get swept, and it would also require both Dartmouth and Cornell to only earn at most 2 points this weekend.

The best way to approach this weekend is to take it one game at a time. Focus on Yale first, then on Brown. Fortunately here in New England, the weather forecast this week does not call for any major storms! So I'll be at both games this weekend. I better not be disappointed!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

red go over this scenario for m and make sure I did this right:

If we ended up with a tie with Yale in points it would go to head to head first so lets say we beat them Friday and then both teams win saturday. Then it would go to "wins." I assume this means wins in league play, which we would also have identical records 12-7-3 given that scenario. If Harvard also gets 2 points they would be in because they beat us 2-0 on the season. The split with Yale would next be determined by "record vs the top 4." We would be 3-5 against Q, SLU, Y, and Harvard and they would be 3-3-2 against Q, SLU, Harvard, and 'Gate giving them a better record and that last spot. This is why you are saying we need one more point than Yale correct? That would suck if this happened.

The whole tie breaker process is on the front page of USCHO in the ECAC blog. Yale would be in over Harvard due to head to head and Harvard would be in over you due to head to head I believe is the correct answer because H2H is one of the top tiebreakers and and soon as one team is in due to prevailing in a 3 way tie breaker then they do head to head for the next two.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

The word on the street (from a pretty good source) is that Spiro probably will not be able to play for the rest of the year (playoffs & NCAA included). Good thing we have 5 guys solid on defense - that's more than most teams have.
I must just be an old f**t - I don't see any way Quinny is not in the NCAA - even if they lose in the first round of the league tournament. What Colgate needs to do is get to Lake Placid and win both games. Maybe we could get in with a win and a loss - as long as the loss is to the right team.
I'm just thankful we have the opportunity to watch quality college hockey. I enjoy watching the guys grow and get better and enjoy watching the new kids come in. I've played (a little and not well!!), and watched all kinds of hockey for 55 years and college hockey has become much better to watch than the NHL. NHL game is too slow and not enough emotion,
Whatever happens from here on out THANKS for entertaining us all year. And we should all remember nobody wants to win more than the kids on the team.

GO "GATE !

PS: Root for Quinny Friday.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Unfortunate news with Spiro. Was hoping to have him back by the playoffs with a bye.

It would be easy for Quinn to fall out of it. BC was 9th to start the day, IF they lost they would have fallen to 16th!!! and out of the tourney. Quin is 10th. If they chalked it up and I put two losses into the simulator this weekend against Dartmouth and Harvard they fall to 15th (that's without any other teams results). Throw a vermont/lowell win in there who play each other and they are on the outside real quick. Believe me they are playing 100% this weekend trying to improve their position.

Head-to-head, then total league wins, then record vs. top 4. If Colgate defeats Yale on Friday, then loses to Brown on Saturday, and Yale defeats Cornell on Saturday, the tiebreaker would be the record vs. top 4. We would win this tiebreaker if 'Gate and Yale were tied for 3rd, and this would only apply if it was a 2-way tie between Colgate and Yale. A 3-way tie with Colgate, Yale, and Harvard would be broken by H2H and would go Yale-Harvard-Colgate, in that order.

Say it ain't so! That would be terrible!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

My head's spinning reading all these scenarios. All I know is there are two games left on the RS schedule :)

Re: Colgate 2014-15

We just have to get one more point than Harvard and not let anyone behind us pass us ! Beating Yale would be huge, again don't forget, they beat us 3-1 with an open netter without Finn, Spink, Borkowski and Murphy.

I think we have a very realistic shot at beating Yale. Every year it's down to the last weekend.
