Colgate 2014-15

Re: Colgate 2014-15

We out played QU for most of the game. We lost control for about 5 minutes in the first and 40 seconds in the 2nd. We were getting shots to the goal, rebounds but not finishing. Very disappointing loss especially after the quick start but the quality of play was great. We are kinda up a creek without a paddle for the at large possibilities. I am surprised how far we fell with a loss to a 13tb ranked team (down to 23 immediately after the game). With a win we'd be tied with QU for 13th, disappointing. (with no other results simulated, sweeping next weekend could put us in 15th)

As for the standings we still in a decent position for a bye. We are one point out of a bye. If we play like we did tonight and finish a couple rebounds we will be ok

Great effort, and we held Anas pointless. Glad Borkowski felt well enough to play both games.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Something I forgot to post last night was ... why wasn't the pep band in attendance? Not only that, but the building looked empty last night too! This was an important game, and we couldn't get a home crowd to back us up like we do whenever we play Cornell? Unacceptable.

Winning cures that. Ask Dartmouth. Heck, ask Harvard.

For various reason, some campuses have a higher percentage of band wagon fans. To be honest, many of these reasons reflect well on the school -- Cornell's faithful is in part a rational choice theory reaction to Ithaca on a weekend. Colgate kids may well have other things competing for their time. But winning creates a virtuous cycle.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Right now we're the last team in the top 8 to at least get a home playoff series. Unfortunately that may be about all we can hope for. We're in the bottom third of the league in most stats (9th in team offense,
8th in team defense, 9th in goals against, 10th in save percentage, 9th in power play and 9th in penalty kill).

Our only shot to get to the NCAA's is to get to Lake Placid and win that! 2cond place might not do it.

Quinnipiac looked awfully, awfully good Saturday night - it was hard to tell any difference between their lines and there defense - looked like a first line and a first D out there all night. A lot of clutching, holding and other stuff the refs chose to ignore, but it sure was a good team we saw.

Still have enough games to get into the top 4 - nut we'll need some help along the way. Fingers are crossed!

Go 'Gate

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I understand we are in 8th but that is misleading because we are 1 point out of a tie for 4th. If we sweep this weekend the worse we can do is tied for 5th and likely higher. The middle of the pack is so tight that we won't know anything until the last weekend or two.

Dave, you say QU was good on Saturday, I think we outplayed them. I am hopeful that on Friday we get our original team back with spiro and go on a run like we all expected. Go 4 of 6 we probably have a bye, sweep our playoff series. I think we will have a shot at an at large bid.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

We have 17 points one point out of third right now, not counting tiebreakers. It's far from over, but, we need to win. This weekend will be four weeks out for Spiro, they estimated he would be out 4-6 weeks. We need him back badly, we're not the same team without him, especially on the powerplay.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

This is the first time ALL year we have had no forwards hurt, can't believe Borkowski is back ! When Goulakis comes back we will have our full team skating for the first time ALL year. Maybe this weekend, who knows, the regenerative powers of these young kids is mind boggling to me. Unfortuneately we are running out of time, let's just do it !

Re: Colgate 2014-15

So, do you give finn a breather at any point? I know some posters have mentioned it before, but it's hard to do, but I do think there is some fatigue with finn. Hamilton has been good in goal when he was in there so I don't think it'd be a huge drop off. But, I don't think vaughn will rest him at any point I think finn is too much of a competitor.

4 of 6 would put us a 25 points, generally right on the bubble of a bye. But we ply 3 teams in front of us so that gives us an advantage as well.
Hoping for spiro' return friday, but who knows

You're putting the whole town in net?!:D

I have a feeling the bye will end up around 26 points. The spread right now is 20-30, with 12 points up for grabs, four teams on 18, two on 17.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Our league GF-GA is 37-41. That is ominous and we've been feeling the results.
Last season we finished 13-6-3 (2nd, 29 pts). GF-GA was 72-59.
Defense wins championships but we need the offense to get us there!

Don't want to speculate about Spiro...but even if we do play in the prelim round, I hope he shows up for Games 2 & 3!

I guess the good news is we are on the road this weekend where we hold a
9-5-1 record (including the Pitt tourney). At home we are 6-5-2. The saturday night season ticket holder has seen them go 1-5-1 including the Cornell game with the sole win back in October over Northeastern. I am curious to see if the wrath of Harvard is unleashed on us Friday or if they continue their spiral.

Anybody have any thoughts on potential ECAC matchups. For example, I may sound crazy but I think I would prefer to go up and play Clarkson or St Lawrence who we have had success over, then get the bye and have Yale or Harvard come to Starr with all the pressure on us.

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Even with a short bench, Harvard walloped us 6-1 and we were ranked #15 at the time. We are one of their 2 wins in the last 7 games...awful! And then they lost to Brown! I'd say that makes us look even worse, but at least we beat Brown in OT. Our loss to a lackluster RPI team this season was one of our worst games. I have doubts we could beat Union a second time. IMO we match up the most evenly with the Dutchmen, very inconsistent play and erratic defense/goaltending. Playing Yale at Starr is asking for a loss. I am not confident against any opponent and feel very deflated after last season's inspiring run to Lake Placid. But the best thing? A clean slate come tourney time and hopefully not playing in Hamden!!!

We've just GOT to win on Friday the 13th!!!
Get Well Spiro!!!
Go 'Gate!!!

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Such a promising season with the lineup we've been waiting for. Do we blame the slide on injuries? Perhaps an impact but other teams have gotten through similar challenges. I've watched a lot of promising Gate teams not make it over the top. College hockey is a tough game to rise to the top in especially in the ECAC and at a small school. I still say Don needs to learn how to manage his players. You can't burn them out, you can't ride them too hard, it's a long season. Spread it around. I agree with the previous post about Finn.... He's competitive and wants to be in there. A little competition, from the other goalies, a little down time is good for him. Also gives the other goalies some confidence and experience. God forbid Finn gets hurt. With the other goalies lacking experience we'd be fried. Remember a similar situation when Don rode Dex and then he gets injured in practice the week of the first playoff game. Other two goalies had one start each. Two games and season was over. I fear we are headed for another season that could have been...

I feel your pain Woodstick, and agree with much of what you say. But the bottom line is: we gotta win! Our best chance is with Finn in goal. It would be great if we could give the backup goalies a chance to play but we don't have that luxury right now :(

Re: Colgate 2014-15

Good lead article on Mike Borkowski at CHN. It is stated near the end of the piece that there has been another "key injury" this week. Does anyone know what this is about/what player is injured?? Whoa is me...

Re: Colgate 2014-15

I think she is referring to spiro, even though she mentions him in the next sentence. Unless it happened during practice I didn't see anything on Saturday. She wasn't great with details as she mentioned we were tied for 4th. So I'm ahem hoping that she was bad with details or misinterpreted Vaughn

You would have to be crazy go want to go to Appleton and play SLU, especially with Hayden in the nets. Now Clarkson is another story. I would think you would be begging to play Clarkson given Colgate's recent history both at Starr and Cheel. Since 2007-2008 season Colgate is 5-0-3 at Starr and 6-2-3 at Cheel (this includes a 2008 quarterfinal round 2-1 ECAC Tournament win) against the Knights.
