Colgate 2013-14

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Lack of discipline cost us a win against Cornell last December. Staying out of the box is important, but last weekend we were perfect on the penalty kill, but we still gave up 8 even-strength, non-empty-net goals. We will need to play better defensively, especially if Cornell is now rolling 4 forward lines.

Scoring first, and also scoring early in the game, will also be key to Saturday's game.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

As expected, at this point, Saturday is now SOLD OUT. Sounds like the last tickets went today, so if you hadn't gotten them already, sounds like you're gonna be out of luck.

Understandably, Cornell is the one game when you pretty much have to buy in advance, because I don't think they're holding any for day-of-game, aside from the student allocation. The student allocation might even be gone already, though the university website is saying that the first 50 students to the women's basketball game at 4 are gonna get Cornell tickets.

Actually, if it wasn't supposed to be so **** cold, Saturday is a decent day for athletics- lacrosse starts the season at 1pm at Andy Kerr vs. Bryant, then the women host American at 4, and then Cornell rounds out the tripleheader. Daytime high for those hardy souls taking in the lacrosse is supposed to be around 15.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

(Cornell) PP is at around %18

This number is deceiving, though, because we started the season in the mid-30s, leading the nation. In the new year the pp has been horrendous. OTOH, the pp went in the toilet right about the time we started winning consistently, so...

Should be a very good game.

Generally speaking, the Colgate athletics department allocates a set number of student tickets, and they are distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis on the day of the game starting usually around 5:30 PM. My freshman year (2005-06) there was a line of students as early as 4 PM waiting for tickets that snaked its way around Reid Athletic Center. At 5:30, the students started rolling in and the student section was full by 6 PM. Don't know if that will happen this year.

When they say the game is sold out, it means the supply of tickets for sale to the general public has been exhausted.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

The big thing for this game is to get the first goal. As 'gate fans we seem to think bad things will happen. So if Cornell gets the first goal it Starr seems to (from a noise factor) turn into lynah. Very tough to come back from that.

Huge game for us in the pairwise rankings, we need to keep contact with the high teens to make a playoff push worthwhile.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Think the last time we beat the Big Red at Starr was a 2-1 thriller on a controversial goal that made the Raiders rush off the ice!
We need to avoid getting a 2-goal lead. It backfires!
Good luck Colgate!

Actually, the last time we beat Cornell at home was in January 2012. We were down 3-1 going into the 3rd period, then scored 4 unanswered goals to win. An even strength goal to make it 3-2, then a shorthanded goal (by Austin Smith) to tie it, then a power-play goal to take the lead, and a near-200 foot empty-netter to ice it.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

It was soo great. We have to use our speed to beat those big pylons, won't be easy.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Hope not....speed and size:eek:

Our roster size is a little misleading. Many of our biggest guys are seeing limited (or zero) playing time. The larger guys who are skating regularly oddly enough are not the physical players. For instance: Ferlin (6-2, 217) is a finesse puck possession player, Pat McCarron (6-3, 195) I would have sworn was more like a 5-11 jackrabbit. Hilbrich (6-6, 216) is a physical presence but primarily as an immovable object in the high slot. He and Craig (6-5, 215) have surprisingly quick hands for such big skaters.

If you see de Swardt (6-5, 210) out there then yes, you are seeing the typical wide turn battleship that you can skate circles around. But, perhaps because of this, he's gotten almost no ice time since our other forwards have returned from injury.

We're a huge team on paper, and there have been teams that looked tiny against us (Harvard looked like a mite team, though we still outskated them), but I think a lot of that size hasn't translated into the kind of sheer terror-inducing physical play that was once our hallmark. After a very awkward and painful transition we've changed with the rules. We're not by any stretch the kind of up-tempo squad that Yale used to have or RPI has now. But there are now teams (Dartmouth, Brown) that try to slow us down and clog our lanes. It's an ironic turnabout from the olden times of Schafer hockey.

These games always seem to be excellent. Travel partner games have that civil war aspect and even though this year's aren't home and home those past weekends have created some acrimony (though to be honest I think it's more in the stands than on the ice). I think this game will be especially exciting since it's coming just as the teams make the turn into the ECAC stretch, both teams are fighting for a top 4 slot, and because it's a Saturday singleton which seems to always kick things up. I expect a very close game decided by one or both of a hot goalie and a lucky (or unlucky) bounce. I really wish I could be there in person.

Good luck to 'Gate... starting next weekend, of course. ;)

I'd like to look at the rest of the season as 2 pieces. We will need to win 2 out of the next 3 and 5 out of the next 7 if we are to get a top 4 spot for sure. Looks like union and Quinny will be 1-2. A win over Cornell is mandatory if we are to get back on track here and forget last weekend. After that we have Union and RPI at home in which we will need to win one of those. Same idea with Princeton and Quinny and then we should sweep Harvard and Dartmouth again at home. That should put us in a good position in both the ECAC and prob put us right around 14-17 in the pairwise. I look forward to seeing what this team has down the stretch!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I have no idea what the flaming garbage in the Cornell sweaters was tonight. Congrats to Gate -- you deserved to win about 12-1.

Hmmm - what's this in the back of my cabinet? A can of whoopaz? Maybe THAT'S what I should open this evening!
