WTH happened last night, KenSchott says it was a weird game, Appert says he has never seen anything like it in his life. Sounds like our goalies(all three played) couldn't stop a basketball. Seven powerplays, three majors, no shots on goal ???

I just talked to someone who watched the game , he agrees with Ken Schott and Appert about being one of the weirdest games ever. The RPI.org tv guy said Colgate just can't catch a break. This was after we hit two crossbars in the second. He said Colgate was controlling the puck and in the offensive zone for most of the play. He also said we were better playing five on five than on the PP. :confused:

Finn let in a wraparound for the first goal then a dump in by the RPI penalty killers bounced thirty degrees left and somehow it went in. He was shaking after that goal.

Oh well sometimes these things occur, put it behind you and "work on the PP" this week and prepare for the north country. The good thing is that we got our split on the road. Let these young kids mature.

Cold hard facts about last night's game:

-In the first period, we allowed 4 shots on goal. 2 of them went in. The second goal was a "lucky bounce".
-In the second period, we allowed 3 shots on goal. 1 of them went in.
-In the third period, we allowed 7 shots on goal. 3 of them went in.

-Charlie Finn made 4 saves on 7 shots.
-Spencer Finney didn't face any shots on goal in the 2nd period, but in the 3rd, he made 3 saves on 6 shots.
-Eric Mihalik only faced one shot in 6:48 of playing time. He stopped it.

RPI scored 6 goals on 14 shots. Our goalies combined for a .571 save percentage. Yes, fifty-seven point one percent. With average goaltending we would have won this game 2-1. Just a bad night for our netminders. I won't get into detail about the goals that RPI scored, refer to Shabby's post above.

I will agree with GreenCoat, that Mihalik should get the next start.

Mihalik is ranked 4th in league in save pct at .931 - I agree it's time to give him another look. Clarkson swept Harvard/Dartmouth on the road. For a team that wasn't expected to do much this season, they are off to a flying start. Won't be an easy time of it next weekend. We need about 5 days of PP practice.

Spiro just doesn't look like his old self on the PP...after what he's been through this observation is secondary in importance, and I hope everything's OK...I don't get the reluctance to play Mihalik...could it be some physical issue...simply don't know, but that goaltending display on Saturday was awful...defense looking better at clearing the puck and starting reasonably quick transitions...nonethless, after 11 games we've allowed 27 goals in 4 separate games (7,7,7,6)...maybe a learning process, but goaltending is absolutely crucial, especially in the ECAC...look at Yale's new goalie against Q-Pac...

The problem with this team is consistency. Look how good they were at union, then let up six to RPI. RPI is the better team but that doesn't mean it should be as bad of a showing as they had.

As far as the goalies are concerned I think Vaughn is just randomly playing goalies, and if they do well they get the next start. I can't blame him for starting the goalie after a good start, just how do you pick it in the first place. It really feels like a lottery for the staring goalie, either they are going to perform well or they are going to fall on their face. We don't seem to have "good games in goal" they are either outstanding or "others".

Until we figure it out the season will be up and down with no predictability.

I just watched the RPI game on RPI TV and it was very good coverage. It was very misleading by the score. We actually controlled most of the play when it was five on five. It was one of those games where we didn't get "any" breaks and RPI got many. The first goal(wraparound) was a bad goal. Finn just overplayed the shooter before the wrap. The second goal was pure luck on a very strange bounce. Another goal went between our goalie's legs and another just trickled in. The RPI guy bounced it off our goalie from behind the goal line. We had two pipes in the second with the score 3-1, no breaks. RPI had no shots in the second from the three minute mark to the end of the period. Everything went in for them and nothing for us. They scored on about 45% of their shots, SIX goals on FOURTEEN shots, EIGHT saves:confused:

We had better get this goaltending situation straightened out quickly or we're going to be in trouble. One thing I did notice was RPI was much bigger and could body our small dmen off the puck at times, but we definitely had an edge in speed. Lough is a tremendous skater.

Stuff like that happens in hockey, put it behind you and go forward. Look at Q-Pac outshooting Yale 50-20 and barely getting a tie. SLU tied Yale so it's not going to be easy Friday night in Canton.

I'm beginning to wonder if having three goalies is the problem. I know we've usually carried three; i.e. last year with Estep, who was really a non-factor, is an example. But now we have three who are all of good quality IMHO. Finney and Mihalik have proven themselves in the past, and Finn has the cred of his junior hockey to be a star in future years. So what's to do?? I agree somewhat with red133883: it's like...who do we play in goal tonight? Spin the bottle, etc. Consistency is the key, but how are we gonna find out who's consistent unless we play them, and then risk a loss. Hopefully this will be ironed out as the season goes along (but we may incurr a few untimely losses along the way) :eek:

All other feelings aside from certain happenings in last night's game, I was very surprised to find that you haven't been playing Mihalik. After all, hasn't he been regularly playing for you guys for the last 3 years?

at this point Mihalik would appear to be the best option...I may be missing something here, but other than the second St. Cloud game he's been quite good...we NEED decent goaltending because this team isn't going to score goals in bunches...3/game would be good...

To be honest I don't care who gets the starting job, they all have shown quality skills. Vaughn needs to pick his starter and go with him, give him a little breathing room. The pressure he has placed on the goalies is insane (one off day and you will be on the bench for two weeks). If you give one goalie the nod and say you are the guy, (unless you fall completely off the cliff for 3 or 4 games) it would provide stability at the back end and take some pressure off.

What do you know ... our next game is in that personal house of horrors! At least we're getting it out of the way early this year.

St. Lawrence and Clarkson are both coming off 4-point road weekends. AND neither team has played a league contest at home yet! These next 2 games won't be easy. We only have 1 win at Appleton Arena in the past 11 years, though we did salvage a tie up there last season. Gotta keep Greg Carey in check. Ironically, we have the best record of any ECAC team at Cheel Arena, with only 1 regular season loss up there in the past 10 years (which I personally believe was the result of a stomach bug epidemic).

Will the goaltending be consistent? Will we go with just one netminder this weekend? I say we start Mihalik both games, even if we lose Friday. He has just one bad period this season (the 1st period of the 2nd St. Cloud game), and has proven he can be the #1 guy. Recently it seems like if a goalie has a bad night, he's on the bench for the next several games. Constantly juggling goaltenders doesn't work, even if we have three of them that are capable of being the go-to guy. Have faith in one player, and it can yield positive dividends.

I agree wholeheartedly and think Mihalek should get the nod Friday night. How about we play one goalie "each" period every game ??:)

Let's not give the staff new ways to juggle the goalies! (Sadly I wouldn't be surprised about the "different goalie per period" )
