Colgate 2013-14

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I am now buying what greencoat has been saying. Not counting an essential dump at the last second of the second period we had 6 shots on goal after 2 periods. The only reason we were down 2-1 after two periods was because we were on the power play for the last 15 minutes of the second and still couldn't shoot. We had a 5 on 3 for 1:09 and didn't even get a shot on goal. That cannot happen when playing at home. We have had a real tough schedule but you have to win some of these home games.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Early in the season but a bit suprised at the offensive end of the ice. On a seperate note watched a game against Ferris and there was no audio (at least at my end) watched off and on tonight and there was audio and whoever calls your games does a nice job.

'Gate Radio (occasionally posts on this thread) is the one calling the games. It's the same audio you would hear if you listened on the radio.

As far as last night goes, we were outplayed. Even in the 1st period despite taking a 1-0 lead. The turning point came in the 2nd period, when we couldn't score with just over a minute of 5-on-3 then the Bobcats score shorthanded (yes, shorthanded) during the subsequent 5-on-4.

Then we got blitzed for 5 goals during the first 10 minutes of the 3rd. Why the heck did Coach Vaughan NOT pull Spencer Finney? Thankfully we still have another 21 league games but last night was NOT fun to watch.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

unfortunately, most nights are not fun to watch...and we're building a $35 million facility for hockey??? It's a pretty big gamble, apparently to improve our "recruiting profile"...I guess that once built we will all of a sudden start to recruit in the right areas across the country...Q-Pac does have a nice facility, but the simple truth is that Pecknold and his staff recruit better players year-in and year-out...they go to the right places and work...I don't really care how great a facility is, at the end of the day if you are not competitive you won't draw flies...

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Remember QU is coming off a national finals second place finish . Maybe our play had something to do with the competition? :)

I would expect Mihalik will start tonight. Perhaps DV was saving him for P'ton and decided not to throw him to the wolves last night.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

TheCoat is a happy man this evening after a necessary 3-1 win against Old Nassau...and so is my wife; after the victory I informed her that she wouldn't be beaten this evening...seriously, except for that "hide the salami" act after we went up 2-0, the coverage was pretty good...continue to like Darcy Murphy, but REALLY hope we do not sustain any injuries on the back line...we have NO depth back there...they finally gave the poor freshman in net some help...

Re: Colgate 2013-14

My only complaint about this afternoon: the video feed from the Patriot League network would not work today. This is the 2nd time this season that this has happened. But hey, it's a win, AND it's a win against Princeon (a team that seems to frequently have our number), and we snapped a 4-game losing streak.

What's with the football team this season? Losing to Bucknell at home? 0-4 at home this season? Yeesh.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I thought we played pretty well vs. P'ton. I didn't see the QU game but was there last night. We seemed to be playing up tempo and all over the ice. I was particularly impressed with Kyle Baun, who plays with an edge and doesn't pull any punches + he's quick to the puck. McCann seems to have upped his game from previous years. Andrew Black also showed some nifty maneuvers and for a big man is speedy and a great checker.

This is a young team and still a work in progress. Hopefully it will mature over the course of the season and get a 5-8 finish in the league and a home series. Those who picked P'ton, Clarkson, and Brown for the cellar may have a surprise coming. There are no easy wins in the league this year, and from the looks of the scores/standings, anything could happen. Should they break the league down into North and South Divisions, with seedings based on the previous year's final standings?? Something like the European soccer leagues? Think about it, eh? :)

As for the football team: a down year for Biddle's boys. When McCarney is at 50% or less we just can't function + the D has been really bad. :(

We'll get blitzed when we go to Baker Rink. That's where it happens. The PU-QU combo has become our worst road weekend, even worse than the North Country (in that one at least there's Clarkson).

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Princeton has "fourteen" USHL recruits, hmmm. Looking forward to the polls this PM. St Cloud swept North Dakota in Fargo. Q-Pac shutout Cornell 3-0, both these teams will be around #5-6. Ferris is five and two I believe. It's not like we are playing inferior teams, probably the hardest schedule we have "ever" had. Will help us in the long run against ECAC teams.

Finn looked very good and actually had a modicum of help Sat night. I met AD Vicky Chun sat night, what a nice lady ! She and Andrew Dickson were speaking at the "Silver Puck Banquet, she said the announcement of the new rink was going to be discussed. They have picked an architect, I'm disappointed it's going to have a capacity of only around 2000. Building starts in the spring and will take two years.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

yes, and Q-Pac has seven...look, we can have certain disagreements about a variety of hockey-related subjects, but you'd have to be deaf, dumb and blind to suggest that a virtual boycott of the USHL hasn't hurt the program since 2006-2007...if this avoidance has not been a detriment then someone please tell me why our winning percentage over the last 7+ years is in the low 40 per cent range...

Re: Colgate 2013-14

To shabby's point 4 of our 5 losses have been to top 20 teams. (2 to the #3 team, 1 to the #5 team and 1 to te #19 team). As long as we can get going into the league schedule we still can have a productive season.

There is no question we have looked pathetic at points this year, but how much of that are our failures and how much are the opponents? We can't give them a pass for just putting on the skates but we have to have had one of if not the toughest schedules out there.

We had a big win Saturday with union next. RPI should be an interesting test on Saturday. Any predictions on the goaltender on Friday?

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Today's Quiz: QU (ranked #5), Yale (#9), RPI (#10), Cornell (#15) and Clarkson (#16) made the USCHO top 20 this week. Others mentioned were: SLU (34 votes), Union (30), Harvard (22) and Brown (8). With nine ECAC teams either ranked or "mentioned" can anyone name the three teams that were not noted?

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Finn should start.

From what I saw of the game on the web Finn looked solid against Princeton but any thoughts on why Mihalik did not see time this weekend? In 5 games he has 4 quality starts with a 2.04 and .931 --- pretty solid numbers to start the year.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Very quiet around here the past few days ... I guess we're all waiting for the axe to fall.

In other news, Jesse Winchester is now with the Florida Panthers. He scored Florida's lone goal last night in a 4-1 loss to the Bruins. He also got away with what should have been an elbowing penalty and also got in a fight with Gregory Campbell of the Bruins.

He may not have gotten away with it. I believe he has a meeting with Brendan Shannahan.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

We should be happy with a point this weekend, not a great road team and we are playing two very solid teams. Hopefully we can show up tonight.

Your line chart tonight at Union:

I hate posts like this ! Yes, we're three and five, but three losses were against #3 in the nation and #5 in the nation. A fourth was to Ferris who's ranked also. Yes, we may lose two this weekend but we also could win two with sixty minutes of hockey each night. We beat Union last year and lost to RPI 2-1 and 3-2 in OT. We will put some games together at some point. Be nice if it started now. I bet Finn starts.
