Colgate 2013-14

Re: Colgate 2013-14

If I am going to question the coaching i'd be curious why Mihalik was not started on sat. With our biggest question being the goalie why would you break up his strong performance. I understand you want to get everyone involved, but when the goalie has played as well as Mahalik you just have to ride him until he has a rough start. College hockey doesnt play back to back to back games so let him play.

I think what Red is saying is that hockey doesn't play a game three nights in a row, only two nights in a row.

As for the goalie situation all I can figure is that coach wants to get Finn some time in the OOC games, so he has some experience before we start the league schedule, in case he needs him down the line. I know it could come back to bite us in the pairwise, but perhaps his thinking is to bank some experience with Finn now and hope to get a top four seeding in the league playoffs by having at least two goalies that have come into good form thru the season. As for Finney, I dunno. Seems like DV has got to work him in there a bit to get some playing time. If we have a blowout -- (it could happen sometime...maybe) -- perhaps he does some mop up duty?

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I noticed St Cloud plays on a wider rink 200x100, wonder what difference this will(might) make. Anyone know the status of Black for this weekend ?

Re: Colgate 2013-14

What were the quality of goals scored on sat.? Just going off the sat. box scores you could come up with a couple different scenarios. 7 goals in a game always looks questionable except there were 50 shots, a 90%/91% save still gives up 5 so 7 might not have been horrible if they were quality. Looking at it differently -- in most games a tender will see 25-32 shots, Finn gave up 1 on 25 in the 1st so possible improvement in quality of his play from opening night but not a statistical success. Still think you guys are off to a solid start.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Very important 2 weeks ahead for Colgate. We never play well on the road so it is imperative we come away with at least 2 wins these next 4 games, 3 would be a huge bonus. Hopefully we start off on the right foot with a win on Friday night to build some momentum after last saturday. Let's get the offense going and stay out of the sinbin!

Re: Colgate 2013-14

SCSU has played only two games, so we have more ice time, and hopefully more experience from the frosh under our belts. Any guesses as to the goalie lineup for this weekend?

Hijack of thread: Too bad Comets lose first home game but a lot of familiar faces on the ice - Joe Cannata, Keith Kincaid, Hanson Brothers, Gordie Howe, + an SRO crowd...hope you made the game Shabby.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I didn't...figured I got lot's of time. More concentrated on my Gate team !

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Big test tonight and tomorrow, I would guess back to Mihalik but who knows(Finney tonight and Mihalek tomorrow) give everyone a shot non conference ? Hope Black is back in the lineup.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I'll be there for sure....not! What building is it in ? Wonder if she will be at the Savoy in Rome for dinner again ?

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I believe it's in the Sanford (or is it Sandford?) Field House, where the track/tennis courts are. (sorry...brain feeze here)

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Good game to watch except for the ending. St Cloud is a very good, fast team, the best I have seen this season so far. After going down 2-0 in the second we didn't pack it in and made it 2-1 heading into the third. Spink ties the game, we were battling, 45 seconds later a great tip in for the winner.

Mihalek played a super game again, if we have a weakness it's our inability to clear the zone, time and time again we were outforechecked by their small speedy forwards and Mihalek had to save us. We were one for three on the PP and only two minors against us. I would like to see us crash the net more and get some second and third chances as St Cloud did a great job in clearing us out.

This young team is close, the effort is there, maybe we just need some breaks.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

anybody else out there getting at least a little tired of losing??? Perhaps we'll improve over the course of the season, although if history is any guide (at least 7+ years of history) it is not a given...ACCOUNTABILITY is non-existent and it's one reason I didn't give a cent to the new arena...frankly, this hockey program - and in particular those in charge - doesn't deserve such an outlay on their behalf...I've had just about enough...ONE thing we've had improved upon over the past few years is "excuse making"...I heard it all before the game on Friday and I'll hear it again next Friday around 6:50...programs that are now "losing programs" tend to perfect the litany of excuses; this program certainly had a lot to choose from...

Well, I don't know what was said in the locker room after the first period, but they came out right in the 2nd. Problem is that you can't spot a team 4 goals in the first, and expect to get much out of it in the end. The first period, right from the faceoff, was horrific. The entire first minute was played in Colgate's zone. For having played them 24 hours earlier, it was like they had no clue what they were about to face.

I am kind of surprised there were no penalties for the scrum at the end of the game, and actually, whoever went into the boards that hard with 1 second left is probably lucky that he doesn't have to sit a game. That was uncalled for.

Bottom line though, is you can't play a 40-minute game, and hope to gain a whole lot. We'll see what happens in-conference, but this was a lost weekend for sure.
