Re: Colgate 2013-14

Empty net, the game was on Finn's stick. I was impressed that he showed frustration with it (had a hard time saluting). Shows he realized he made mistakes and was not ok with it. He seems to require perfection and that is what we need in net.

The key is gonna be how he responds. Charlie's pretty clearly our #1, but, still, he's only a freshman, and the margin for error at this point in the year is just about down to nothing. He gets just one of those last 2 back, and we win. If he goes out determined to prove that tonight was a fluke, then we're in good shape. If this does something to his confidence, we may be in trouble.

Right now, 29 points is the magic number for clinching a first round bye. Colgate can top out at 31, so first place is probably out of the question, but 2nd place is entirely gettable. But, as mentioned, we have clinched a home playoff series of some type. Dartmouth killed Clarkson tonight 6-1 at Clarkson, there are no easy games at this point. Gotta take care of business.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

No doubt about it the 4 refs may have cost Colgate a trip to the NCAAs. A blatant throw of a broken stick by Gothesbiere at a Colgate player in the second while up 4-2 and a no-call for reasons NOBODY can explain was the game changer tonight when Union scored their 3rd goal (fluke) about 15 seconds after that. Just don't understand how that was not called. In my opinion the worst part of college hockey, terrible officiating. That 3rd goal does not happen if that call is made and it may have been a 5-2 game after that.

Supposedly #26 has been getting favorable calls all weekend. During the alumni dinner prior to the RPI/Cornell game, I heard a few of the Lynah faithful with ties to RPI that Woody Hayes was getting away with a lot.

Tough break on the tie tonight. :(

Re: Colgate 2013-14

The thrown stick was blatant. I wouldnt go as far as intent to injure, but definitely an obviously illegal move to prevent a scoring chance.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

With our 0-0-2 record, we dropped 3 spots in the PWR to 17th. Meanwhile, Clarkson has fallen all the way to 26th, so our two wins against them have lost stock value. We're going to need to beat both P and Q if we want to get back on the right side of the bubble.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Trying to stay positive...we had the #3 team beat for 55 minutes and were rewarded with a nice pic on the front page :-)
Cornell loses x2 as does UVM but they both stay on the "right" side of the bubble and Colgate doesn't :-(
Pton scored 5 on Yale, wow...Qpac lost to Brown at home...need a solid game at Hobey and could be our chance on Sat!
Congrats to the women on their road sweep.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

We got 2 points and didnt lose, and are 3 points up on 4-5th place with 4 games to go. Overall not a bad weekend. At the beginning of the weekend if someone had told me this was going to be the result I would have taken it. The difference is we had each game dead to rights and gave up the point.

And as far as the bubble is concerned, we are going to have to sweat it out all season to find out if we end up on the right side of things. We arent going to be in a position where we are comfortably in the NCAA. So keeping touch with the bubble and not losing a lot of games will be key. Just keep in the running going into the playoffs, we will need to make placid (and possibly the final game to get an at large bid). This is where the dropping of the Consolation game could kill us this year, and that sucks, because in years past (2005) the Consol game got us into the tournament.

On a related note does anyone know how OT games in the playoffs are used for pairwise. I know regular season games that go longer than 5 min overtime are considered ties, does this continue for playoff hockey or do they use the final result?

Regular season games can't go past 5 min OT ???

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Finn absolutely stole a point for us Friday, had a bad day Saturday. I consider it a wash, if not for him we would not be where we are in the standings. A three point lead in third I'll take all day long, we are in great shape. Picked for tenth or eleventh, my barometer of the team is if we get to Placid after only playing one playoff series, at home. Anything after that is just cream on a great season.

I also like the fact that we're getting secondary scoring and not just from Spink, Spink, and Baun. With seventeen frosh and sophs, we knew there would be ups and downs, going forward same team next year plus recruits it will be vey interesting, I think Gate hockey is in the best position for success that we have been in, a very long time. Don't forget the new rink also.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Shabby; you can play more than 5min of ot if you want in the regular season(beanpot is the prime example) but as far as NCAA consideration is concerned only wins and losses in the first 5 min count.

So the question is, does Vaughn start Finn, and try to get his confidence up and show confidence or do you give mihalik the nod. I first thought of going with mihalik would be obvious but now it seems like getting finn back out there would be a good idea, and (depending on standings) give him a breather during senior weekend

Not for long if we don't wake up. The three losses have dropped us from 6 to 13 in PWR. The nature of being on the left tail is a win only nudges you up while a loss shoves you back.

I would regard Finn's game Saturday as a momentary blip. Think it would be crazy not to start him Friday, and probably Saturday. Just MHO.

I won't be content with yet another semifinal appearance and loss. I'll be content with a minimum of playing the ECAC title game and satisfied with reaching the NCAAs as an at large. I'll be ecstatic with getting the autobid, but that will probably be either Quinnipiac or Union. Those 2 teams are a notch above the other ECAC teams, as Union showed last night.

Given the likelihood of Union and Quinnipiac both finishing in the top 2, if we make it to Lake Placid our first game will most likely be against one of these two teams. But we can't think too far ahead right now. Just focus on Friday's game against Princeton.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Princeton will not help us gain much if anything in the Pairwise this Friday but they certainly will come close to destroying an at large bid if we were to lose. As far as making it to Placid and playing we will need to make it to the finals right now unless we win the next 4. I would prefer to play Union right now over Q. We have tied and beat them this year while Q just dominated us back in November at home. Could be a much different result on Saturday but right now we would be slotted to play Q as we have a really good chance to finish in 3rd and they look like they will finish in second. That being said there are always upsets and the top 4 after there bye could be playing some very good teams in Yale, Clarkson, SLU, and RPI (assuming we get the third spot and Cornell gets the 4th)

Re: Colgate 2013-14

We were a different team back on November 1st when Quinnipiac blitzed us. Of course, we have to play them in their building now, where we haven't won since 2009.

Re: Colgate 2013-14

I'm staying with my original intent to injure on stick throwing - not because I believe Gotisbehere (sp?) was actually "trying" to hurt someone but rather on the action being unreasonably dangerous and likely to cause injury. Similar to butt-ending or a hit to the head - you don't really need to intend anything - committing the act is sufficiently reckless and dangerous as to invoke the "intent to injure" concept. Of course this is all academic because the refs didn't even see the infraction.

It will be interesting to see how this weekend shapes up. I would be surprised not to see Finn both nights - a rest on Friday would have been good but now risky given the potential for it to be seen/felt as a lack of confidence. If we can win on Friday, we are in a battle for 2nd place (technically 1st too - but not really) with a four-point game on the line - that says go with Finn too. I will also be watching to see how we do against a Q team that lit us up in the early going. A win or strong loss shows some fair development - a bad loss makes me wonder about the team's ability to adjust its play in order to deal with teams that are tough match-ups (i.e. RPI/Yale/potentially Q).

No easy games but I think the P-D-H wins over the past weekend will help keep our young team on its toes and reduces somewhat the chances of running into a truly desperate team that's looking for a season salvaging signature win.

Lots could be resolved on Friday as Cornell and Clarkson play Q and u respectively - if there aren't any upsets (and that includes Gate taking care of business - no small feat) - the race for a bye could be all but over.

And yet, they think they're such perfect angels because the refs let them get away with it...

Colgate has an outside shot at the Cleary Cup, but when I say outside, I mean WAAAAAAAAY outside. Very improbable, but not without possibility. But hey, at least you'll have another home weekend no matter what. It's just a question of when (and of course, the opponent).

Re: Colgate 2013-14

Would rather not play Q again in the playoffs because those three OT playoff games in 08-09 (out of the record 19 OT games that we played that season) still sting. The Bobcats have certainly had our number lately. Our playoffs always seem to go through St. Lawrence, RPI or Quinnipiac every year :-) While Yale was last year's Cinderella team, it feels like Q and U are building a dynasty over the last few years. Their sustained success is really incredible.

One needs only to remember the magical playoff run in '10-'11 when we finished dead last and went on to beat #15 RPI (x2) and #4 Union (x2) to know that anything is possible for Colgate!!! Arguably the greatest, losing season in Colgate history!!! Thank you, Wade Poplawski!!!

Go 'Gate!
Beat Princeton!
