Re: Colgate 2012-13

I don't want to sound insensitive, but why do we continue to have men's and women's track teams...that, along with rowing seem to be indulgences that, as we go forward, we should avoid...we can't be all things to everybody and, parallel to a contemplated decision to refine and reduce our cirriculum offerings, some intelligent retrenchments are necessary.
Given the geographic location, I don't blame you for thinking this way. I was at Starr a few years ago late in the season and I arrived during a driving snow storm. The field lights were on, and they were snowblowing the field -- my
guess is it was for lacrossse practice /game. I can only imagine what they'd have to do to get the track teams ready for a home meet. :D

Re: Colgate 2012-13

after a shaky first period they played well, especially Mihalik...yes, defensemen, you are good enough to beat the trap by carrying the puck out of your own zone...great to see Spiro play and get on the board...there even appeared to be a good crowd...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Sweet, sweet victory! Our first win in February, and first win since January 26!

There were a lot of positives from this game:
-Spiro played again, he even scored the game-winner
-Eric Mihalik starts his first game since January 5, and makes 35 saves on 36 shots
-Based on the video feed I was watching, there was a good student turnout making a lot of noise
-Listed attendance was 1903 -- that means the rink was 84% full!
-The team as a whole was playing with a sense of urgency, and we were NOT turning over the puck in our defensive end! A team like Union would have made us pay for bad turnovers! Thankfully we all brought our "A" game.

Unfortunately, since Brown and Cornell both won, we're still tied for 11th. Gotta win tomorrow night since it *could* be our final home game of the season.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Great win and an even greater crowd!? Do we really need a worthy cause like cancer to have support like that every night? Vaughan was obviously pleased. We even had one more in attendance than they did at SLU lol. Very proud of Goulakos & Co. Mihalik has been a trouper.

Did Union have any fans or band at the game? I say we continue to play them at Starr just to mess with them even after the new rink is built.

I noticed they played Hit the Road Jack when we took a penalty?! What gives with that? Would still prefer fewer penalties, esp. in the offensive zone. Lots of scrums that seemed avoidable.

Congrats to the women's team for their last-minute win...hope they live to play another
weekend.

Good Luck Colgate!

Union plays Ray Charles for any penalty, similar to how RPI and Cornell play Dragnet's theme song. As for a band, they only put together a ****poor attempt when they play us.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

We have been a streaky team all year...win four lose four etc. Maybe we start a new streak at the "right" time. Mihalek played very well
except the one goal I thought was weak. Everyone played great last night. Gotta do it again tonight.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Spiros' shot was a laser; great to see him get the game winner. Dutchmen swarmed our net at times but we were able to clear better than in past games. Mihalik looked on his game. It was nice to see the seniors involved on the scoring along with the frosh. Bartliff has been quiet - good to see him get his 8th of the season. Thought we mucked well in the corners and kept Union on their heels the last two periods. Started slow, but Spiros' goal woke up the team and an almost full house. No Union band helped. Keep up the pressure tonight guys!

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Special kudos to Billy Rivelini for drawing a penalty in the third which led to the game clinching Spink PP goal. Sometimes the little things don't show up on the scoresheet but make a difference just the same.

Great to see Mihalik rise to the occasion in his first start in months. Let's make it a four point weekend!

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Yes...Rivellini was awesome on the forecheck and no PIM's. He gets carried away at times !

Meh, SLU doesn't include students or other free admissions in their attendance figures. That number is only tickets purchased.

Awesome to hear SG is well enough to play at a high level. Certainly one of, if not the single most inspirational story in college hockey this year

Appleton was nearly completely full and we were listed at 1900 for an arena that seats 3000. They really need to figure out a way to include the students in our attendance figures.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

I just wanted to say on behalf of the Yale Hockey family specifically, and the wider Yale community in general, that we are delighted to see Spiro Goulakos bounce back from his health challenges so quickly and so well. Although I am not an Oncologist, and obviously know nothing of SG's particular situation, I have been involved with many lymphoma patients over the years, and with modern medical advances, his prognosis is excellent. I look forward to shaking his hand next weekend and wishing him all the best !!!

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Grrr ... live video isn't working and I miss the senior night ceremony  Thankfully any remaining games this season won't be webcast by Colgate All-Access. I invested $10 for a 1-month pass and this is the 2nd time this month were it isn't working at the start of the game (for the Brown game it didn't come to life until the 2nd period).

Re: Colgate 2012-13

That hurts big time. One momentary lapse can kill you. Feel very sorry for the seniors.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Ughhh :(

We may have just lost our opportunity for a home playoff series. 10 seconds from earning at least 1 pt and we end up with zero

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Second half of the second period killed us. After we went up 2-0, they lost their energy......looked like they thought they had the game won. Once they got through the horrible end to the 2nd, Colgate played a good 3rd period and OT. Point wise----a tie with one point, or a zero point loss doesn't really matter much. We had to sweep this weekend and next to have a shot at home ice. Oh well.....we've done it on the road before. Hope this loss doesn't demoralize them too much. We CAN beat any team in this league! Another game we could have/should have won. That one hurts! Our inconsistent play continues. Let's hope for better against Yale and Brown.
