Colgate 2012-13

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Well, that was a tough loss to swallow. Spencer Finney made some key saves but he was out-dueled and we hit several posts. I also didn't like the hit on an RPI player at the end of the game. Fortunately no Game DQ was issued but in end-game situations we need to maintain our composure.

Tomorrow night won't be easier, especially with our recent (regular-season) struggles at Messa Rink. I'll be making the drive out to Schenectady to see this game live. We just have to put tonight's game behind us and focus on Union now...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

9 ECAC games, 19 goals...that's not gonna get it done...please get some points tomorrow night...just saw Yale dismantle Harvard, 4-0 (could've been much worse)...I remain perplexed as to why we apparently do not believe in bringing USHL players to Colgate...Yale has 9 from the USHL and Dartmouth about the same number...Yale is talented and deep; they now have a program that reloads and does not need to rebuild...I hope we can bring in another good class next year to approach this year's freshmen, but from a somewhat cursory view I have some doubts...can anybody out there give me a rationale about our lack of USHL players???

The USHL seems to be very competitive, as everyone is going after them. There are only 16 USHL teams and 59 D-I programs, not to mention not everyone in the USHL is going to be good enough to continue to college. Also, I'm sure several of the USHL players go into that league committed to a college from a previous league (whether it's the OJHL, BCHL, NAHL, etc.), so I suppose the question is: How many years ahead is your coaching staff recruiting players?

Re: Colgate 2012-13

We played a pretty good first period, didn't look too rusty. The second period was the worst period I've seen this year. I have NEVER seen a bouncing puck like last night, we caught some breaks in this period.

In the third we played much better and started hitting. It really was anyone's game, we rang "three" shots off the post and four total. Finney was very very good, the winning goal was a tremendous laser.

Goulakos didn't play last night, we really missed him especially on the powerplay. I hope he's not banged up too seriously, he was sorely missed, the PP was not the same without him.

To me, at times, we looked like only two games in fourty days hurt us. I hope this type of scheduling doesn't happen again.

I missed Larkin's hit at the buzzer but saw he got a five minute major but nothing else, the "Tute" faithful want his first born child now. If he and Goulakis don't play tonight we really have our hands full.

Surprising our PWR didn't change thanks to U Mass upsetting BC. With UMass becoming a TUC again our record against TUC's went back to 5-4-1.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Things went downhill after the first period. We clearly missed Goulakis and Larkin looked tired. The entire team, and especially the freshmen, were not able to win the 50/50 pucks and control the puck in the corners, usually a DV specialty. In general, we looked like boys against men in terms of coming away with the puck. RPI is clearly a much better team than there record indicates. Spencer Finney is the real deal. He's got great balance and could be the best on his skates I've seen in a while.

Do we know what's up with Spiro ?

Thanks for the report Shabby. Only heard the last half of the game while watching Yale thump Harvard. I'm not sure about Goulakis but GateRadio mentioned an injury. Sure hope he returns for tonight. GR also brought up the question of Larkin being DQ for tonight's game due to that hit at the buzzer. Don't think that will be the case tho. We've got to stop making silly mistakes; they just come back to burn you. I agree; from what I heard it sounded like we were just a bit out of sync. 40 days with 2 games is not good scheduling. Great game by both goalies - too bad Finney was screened on that shot.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Goulakos was hurt at the tail end of the first Sacred Heart game. At this point on last night's box score, Larkin's lone penalty is a five-minute major for boarding. No misconduct issued. So, he will be eligible to play against Union as far as I know.

Re - Scheduling. Blame Vermont for having to pull out of the Jan. 12 game at Starr. Colgate traded that game because of a UVM scheduling conflict, for the Tuesday night season opener with Niagara. 'Gate was initially supposed to open at Miami but Niagara had no open dates later in the season that matched with Colgate.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

We had some chances but just couldnt finish against RPI. I think the second period was definitely a weak period and needs to be addressed. My bigger concern and I am sure I am jumping the gun, but we seem to do it every year, the second half of the season falls apart. Last year we were in the same (actually better) PWR position and ended the season losing 4-5 in a row. They need to get a win quick against Union, stem that tide and then play a weaker Brown team to get the mojo back. I agree Finney played very well and has earned his spot.

As for the last hit; it was completely unnecessary as the game was over, but I did not see anything bad about the hit. I think the RPI player stopped playing because the game was "over" and relaxed which made it more dangerous. Although Larkin should not have hit him there was nothing wrong with the actual hit he delivered.

Gotta get those points and shoot for the bye!

Re: Colgate 2012-13

uninspiring at a minimum...ZERO even strength goals in two games, and what's even more disturbing were the constant turnovers, especially in our defensive zone...bottom line: let's hope for a top eight finish and get home ice in first round...in terms of quality scoring chances this game wasn't close and we actually looked tentative and indecisive...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

What happened to the offensive. I wonder if getting easy goals at SH they became complacent. Finney is playing real well and if we get the offense back could go a long way

Stick a fork in them, they're done. Unless we sweep next weekend we're done and in the same boat as last year. Absolutley terrible to go 0-2 this weekend. Very poor scheduling overall. I'm not in any position to know the logistics behind the ECAC scheduling but the lack of competitive games over the last 40 days killed this team. Like I suggested earlier, might have to start pushing to break up the Cornell series into different weekends if this is going to be the case in the future.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

This team is NOT done. Yes, we had twin-killing 2-1 losses this weekend, sweeping us out of the Capital District, but it wasn't the result of the team playing two entirely bad games Why?

1. Spencer Finney made 58 saves on 62 shots over the course of the weekend, good for a 93.5% save percentage. If it wasn't for him we probably would have lost 5-1 last night. Union had several near-misses and hit a post. Defense and goaltending isn't a problem here.
2. We scored a power play goal in each game, keeping it above 20% on the season. Also, the penalty kill was perfect on the weekend. We only gave Union three power-play opportunities last night and they're usually very dangerous with the man advantage. Special teams isn't a problem here.

But yes, the 5x5 offense seems to have gone cold. Not having Goulakos is hurting us. I didn't know he was injured until yesterday. The fact that he was still out even after a bye week last weekend is concerning. We only have 21 skaters on the roster and typically, a team dresses 18. With a player injured that only leaves two healthy scratches. Thankfully with 8 defensemen on the roster we have our options.

Another harsh reality is that we've only scored 20 goals in 10 league games. Exactly half of those goals came in the Dartmouth and Clarkson victories. Take those two games out and we've only scored 10 goals over 8 league games, or 1.25 league goals per game. If we can't consistently score 3 goals a game in our remaining league contests, we may be packing our bags for a 1st-round road trip.

That said, there's still 12 league games for us to redeem ourselves. We can gain ground on RPI, Union, Quinnipiac, and Princeton next weekend.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Was at the Union game on Saturday. Union is just better than us right now and in all honesty they should have won by more than 2-1. The puck was in our end for most of the 1st period, and for the whole game we had trouble generating scoring chances at even strength, as has been mentioned by other posters. And RPI might be turning the corner in the ECAC. So we shouldn't be surprised that we lost both games.

Despite the 2 tough losses I am very optimistic about the future with this team. I don't care where we are in the standings right now -- the important thing is that all of our freshmen are in the lineup every game and are getting a ton of experience. Not to mention that 3 of our top 4 scorers are freshman. And I love how we moved he puck around on the power play. Don't despair, folks. This team's going to get better and better.

An ECAC road win would help.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Hey Magoo, tx for the report. I can't tell you how different we look on the powerplay without Goulakis, he's our QB, we'll be much better when he's back. He's currently day to day.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

good to hear from Magoo again...my only caveat - and once again TheGreenCoat is beating a dead horse - is to follow up this year's quality freshmen class with another one that is above average. We also need to have more than 21 skaters on the roster, but if we don't add to the current list of incoming frosh my belief is that we'll have (again) only 21 skaters next year...this self-imposed restriction is hard to fathom. We lose Price, Larkin, Bourdon and Bartliff next year (along with 4 others) and I only see 8 coming in, including one goalie...and we've avoided the injury bug to a great degree over the past few years...Dartmouth lists TEN freshmen on their roster. I remain hopeful as well, but...

Re: Colgate 2012-13

I think our 4.5 scholarships are used up for next year. Will be tough to land quality players.
