Re: Colgate 2012-13

This game was lost twice. 41 seconds into the game and then 66 seconds after tying the game at 1.

When Cornell takes a lead, they become more difficult to play against. Now I'm not saying we played poorly but when you put over 20 shots on net (more than 1 per minute!) and *somehow* not light the lamp, then the opposing goaltender has clearly brought his "A" game. Andy Iles was up to the task tonight, and Eric Mihalik wasn't

That said, I still think this team has the chops to play with the national contenders. Tomorrow night won't be easy, having to go into that lions den known as Lynah Rink. Gonna miss tomorrow night's game but hoping for the best.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Well Colgate and Mihalik were asleep for the first 50 seconds of the game...and it cost them the game. Even before Cornell scored their first goal they had a shot just wide where Mihalik was way off net and Cornell should have scored even earlier. After that Colgate dominated the game but unfortunately Iles stood on his head and made some phenomenal saves. That's what makes good teams good however, they still find a way to win when they don't have their best night. Colgate played a great game against a team that is truly better and more talented than them. Andy Iles is one of the best goalies in the NCAA. Would have been nice if 'gate at least got the tie, they deserved it. Cornell also played a lot better last week against CC than they did tonight. Good sign for Colgate overall though, just need to get some solid goaltending and a lucky bounce. They are one of the better teams in the ECAC right now despite that loss.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

My mindset is with football, too! 'Gate played a good game so congrats to them.
Cornell is as predictable as Dick Biddle. They are patient, methodical, defense-oriented, and will never change. Three shots on goal and they will score on one of them every time. They wear you down physically and mentally. Our sweep last year was one for the record books.
We have proven we have the fight and the will...but it only truly surfaces against Cornell every season. Why we never see this level of play against every team is disappointing.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Colgate could have won by three goals easily if it wasn't for Iles. It was just one of those nights where he wasn't going to give up many goals. He was tremendous and was the "Sole" reason Cornell won. Even stopping tips and screen shots, I haven't seen a performance like that in quite some time(we rang one off the post right in front of me also). Colgate dominated the first period outshooting them 24-4, shots were 45-14 for God's sakes !! Tough game to watch.

An earlier poster here said Cornell is a more talented team, absolutely not true. They are just big, we are much faster and our passing was phenominal last night, just don't get in a shoving match with them.

I don't know how the first goal went in, it was fluttering thru a crowd, maybe screened but definitely a "soft" goal. The second and winning goal was a pass in front and wristed in, a good shot from right in front, I wouldn't call it a soft goal but a heartbreaker as we just tied it one minute earlier.

Cornell sends one guy in to forecheck then line four guys on the blue line, very effective but boring, but that's their style and it works. A tough loss, hard to watch, but it happens. We need to regroup for tonight, hopefully I'll watch on the computer. I took many positives away from the game, we are a good team.

A win today against Lafayette and we play Lehigh for the championship and an autobid to the NCAA's, dress warm, maybe some white stuff.

Well, knowing how to use your size effectively IS a talent - plenty of times I see fans wishing that their big guys knew how to hit or would be more physical. FWIW, a couple people over on eLynah are lamenting that Cornell didn't hit ENOUGH. :)

Re: Colgate 2012-13

I thought Colgate played a tremendous game last night! I am very impressed with their speed and tenacity. I was also impressed that they didn't get frustrated/chippy or gave up when shot after shot was stopped. Iles stood on his head, for sure. Congrats to him on a great game. Leaving Starr Rink last night, many of us were wearing big smiles because we just watched a very good Colgate team and the future is bright. Good luck tonight boys. Go 'Gate!!!!!!

Disagree. Last night didn't show it, but Cornell is the better puck possession team of the two. There were multiple times last week against a CC team that is better than Colgate where they were making 5 on 5 look like a power play.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Just returned from the frozen basketball game at the KerrDome. Great win vs. the Leopards.

Listened to last night's game. Sounded like we dominted play in the first & second periods for sure. Just a shame one - or more - of those shots didn't find the back of the net. Iles is a great goalie, but hopefully we can solve him tonight. Good luck 'Gate - play another agressive game and maybe we come out with a W :)

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Would have been nice to close out the win tonight but it certainly seems like two very solid efforts this weekend.

You mean like we did to Cornell Friday night ???:D

Re: Colgate 2012-13

Didn't get to see/listen to tonight's game but based on the boxscore this home-and-home with Cornell was very similar to the one we had in 2008-09. That year we also played them in November, losing the first game of the series at home despite outshooting them, then in the game at Lynah take a 2-0 lead only for the game to end in a 2-2 tie.

While we didn't snag a win (I was hoping for at least a split this weekend), we at least earned 1 point and kept Cornell in check on their home ice. Despite the 0-1-1 league record we did play two hard-fought games against Cornell and I still think this Colgate team is one that can play with anybody. On to Quinnipiac and Princeton. These games won't be easy ones either but if we can play with the exact same intensity as we did this past weekend we can put ourselves in good shape for a win (or two).

Re: Colgate 2012-13

We played a great first period scoring two powerplay goals and again outshooting Cornell 10-3. I think we tired in the second and Cornell came on strong and started outplaying us, shots were about even. Third period GR said we were hanging on to the lead and they finally got the equalizer with about seven minutes left.

Cornell scored in the OT but it was immediately blown off as GR said Mihalik had the puck and they crashed him and knocked him and the puck into the net. We had chances, a two on one maybe twice.

A scrum developed at the final horn, it didn't sound good. Then during the handshake it started again and Mihalik took off his cage and had to be physically restrained and escorted off the ice by the linesman. Sounded like Vaughan even had words with Schaefer. Wild ending !
Hope no suspensions occurred. Anyone at the game going to report here...no recaps anywhere I can find.

Re: Colgate 2012-13

The sequence from the CHN box score:

Overtime (5:00)
Timeout - Cornell 4:10.8
CLG-9 Thomas Larkin (2-Roughing) 5:00
CLG-10 Thomas Larkin (10-Misconduct) 5:00
CLG-11 Tyson Spink (2-Shooting after the whistle) 5:00
COR-9 Dustin Mowrey (2-Roughing) 5:00
COR-10 Dustin Mowrey (10-Misconduct) 5:00
End of Game

I didn't see it, but it reads like Spink shot after the whistle, Mowrey took exception, and Larkin stood up for his guy, and the handshake line tone was set from there....

Re: Colgate 2012-13

I did see it. Spink definitely shot the puck in on Iles a couple seconds after the horn sounded to end the game. With everything that went on after that, I'm just glad that those were the only penalties handed out (definitely thought a couple DQ's might have been coming...).

Re: Colgate 2012-13

From GR's broadcast it sounded like Tyson Spink was trying to hit his brother with a breakout pass close to when the horn sounded, maybe trying one last SOG. Cornell might have interpreted this as a shot after the whistle. Then hell breaks out in the line and around Mihalik. Glad we don't face the Red again in the regular season. It would be interssting to see them in the post-season to see if the bad blood continues. Then again, I suppose there is always bad blood between these travel partners :)

Mihalik was jawing and pretty agressive as he went through the handshake line. Will not be surprised if he gets a suspension. Also it's really nice the ECAC officiating is an equal opportunity employer.

*Edit* not to say that Cornell guys we're too. I'm thinking Ferlin, Spink, McCarron, Mihalik, Mowery, Goulakous and maybe more will see ECAC discipline

Football game for the Patriot League Championship at Lehigh is being televised nationally on CBS Sports Network at 12:30 Saturday. Lehigh hasen't lost a league game in three years, hold the nation's unbeaten streak at nine, and except for their loss in the NCAA playoffs last year are unbeaten in eighteen !!!

It's gonna be a classic. Must-see TV. No hockey at Starr this weekend, so we all better tune in...:)

Watched the end of the game twice last night and there is no way to interpret the shot as anything but a shot. Spink is down by the faceoff circle with the puck and takes a shot at Iles after the horn. No surprise that Cornell took exception to it, and it's no surprise that Colgate took exception to Cornell's exception. I have no idea what happened in the handshake line. Obviously the jawing kept rippling onward.

The worst part may have been Syer and Vaughan starting to go at when their only concern should have been keeping the kids separated and getting Colgate off the ice. Vaughan allowed his team to line up across the blueline as if they weren't going to allow Cornell to gather at center ice for their stick salute. Very strange ending. I wouldn't be surprised if Syer and Vaughan got a game for it.
