Coaching changes for 2016-17

Re: Coaching changes for 2016-17

Oh, I don't know about getting rid of Rohlik. Hockey at OSU, just like at Michigan State, is not a priority within the AD's office. FB and BB (both men's and women's BB at MSU) is more of a priority these days.

This is definitely true, and it ****es off us diehard OSU Hockey fans. AD Gene Smith always says we expect all our programs to be championship caliber but he doesn't back it up. But, yeah, you are correct in that it's just not a priority here. It's the same here ... football, men's and women's hoops, maybe throw wrestling in there since we won a National Title last season, but unfortunately for us hockey fans, it's just not a priority, at least not men's. Now, on the women's side, I was pleasantly surprised at the home run hire of Jenny Potter as our women's hockey coach. I'll cut myself off on that as this is the men's forum.

Re: Coaching changes for 2016-17

For this reason I'd only support letting him go if they 100% had someone better already lined up. Just firing in the hopes that just anybody can come in and do a better job, I don't think will work. We have been better in the past than we are now though, so its not ridiculous to think we could again. And yes, FB and BB are always gonna come first for B1G ADs, but schools like MSU and Wisco should be doing better than they're doing regardless.

Your first sentence underscores the problem here. We never have someone better lined up because the OSU athletic administration continues to treat men's hockey as an afterthought. All the good coaches know that, and they won't come here. Until Gene Smith and the athletic department actually make a commitment to men's hockey, we may not get anyone better. Having said that, though, there is no excuse for this program to continue to be one of the BIG Ten's bottom feeders. I think Rohlik has one more year and if next year isn't an NCAA Tournament year (with all the guys he has coming back, it should be an NCAA Tournament year), he's gotta go. OSU has plenty of money to pay the last year of Rohlik's contract.

thought Ohio State made a great hire in Osiecki. So what the hell went wrong there? After that it seemed they just settled for Rohlik.

I totally agree, and clearly, Osiecki had the program going in the right direction. For some reason, the players didn't want to play for him, though, and made that known to the athletic department. Later it came out that he was supposedly abusive to the players, but the details of the whole thing were never made public, so who knows. The timing of Osiecki's firing (April, 2013) hurt OSU regarding hiring a new coach. They probably didn't have too many candidates to choose from and the players lobbied for Rohlik to get the job, so Gene Smith and the athletic department took the easy way out and just hired Rohlik. We see how that is working out. Hiring a guy because "that's who the players want" isn't always the best idea. It certainly isn't working out in this case. The team is undisciplined and hasn't learned that hockey is a 60-minute game. There is talent there, but rarely have they played a 60-minute game. The only time this season where I recall Ohio State putting together back-to-back good games was the tournament down in Florida back in December where they beat Boston College 3-2, then Cornell 8-0 to win the Florida College Hockey Classic Championship. They haven't done squat since.

Both sides like each other. he may just be more suited to the pro game.

So, it's wishful thinking on your part then. And you have no inside knowledge as you have lead everyone here to believe. Cool beans.

I have never heard that the players didn't want to play for Oz and/or that he was abusive. How do you know this if it was never released? Was the complaints from kids he didn't recruit? He had some great recruiting classes in Madison and for OSU and recruits left Wisco to play for Oz.

Don't know much about Rohlik's coaching abilities, but I'd be willing to give him a little bit of a break in that with Osiecki's firing, OSU lost a terrific recruiting class (Sheehy, Stepan, Watson, Dougherty, Valleau) that scattered out to other schools. That's weakened both their junior and sophomore classes. Again, not saying he's the right man for the job, but I'd be a little more patient with him than with a guy like Anastos

Re: Coaching changes for 2016-17

Top (bottom?) two guys on this list have to be anastos and micheletto. Everyone else playing for 3rd.

Oh I do, like I said there is no immediate timeframe. Just may not be the fit that both sides originally thought. Why would it be wishful thinking on my part? What do I care?

Re: Coaching changes for 2016-17

The DQ/NHL rumor has been circulating in certain quarters. I don't think anybody's saying it's a done deal or that anything is even going to happen. Just that that there are whispers.
