Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

I wish the best of luck to him. The cupboard was pretty bare when he took over and he at least has talent on the team now. They may be headcases, but there is talent. He was always a better recruiter than a coach and I am sure the role he got with the NHL team will focus more on those strengths.

Even when the cupboard was pretty bare he couldnt seem to keep his top players. I always thought the same thing, good recruiter but coaching wasnt a strength

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

Wow, team doesn't win as much as maybe it should have and the coach leaves for another job and "class" comes up? You make it sound like a couple players threw a kid into a wall and killed him while the coach cowered in a hole over the whole thing or something.

Dang sounds like you just can't let anything from the past go. Must be why you're dwelling on your old RC days.... Grow up and move on

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

Rumor around town is that he accepted a position from the Washington Capitals. But only a rumor so far.

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

Good luck to Wil. I'm sure there will be no shortage of quality candidates looking to succeed him.

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

UWSP Names Three Finalists:

A.J. Aitken, St. Norbert
Jasen Wise, Marian
Ryan McKelvie, Alaska-Anchorage

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

Must be a story there

As in why would he want to leave Marian or as in why is UWSP considering him? The former is likely related to money and prestige. The later is likely because he has done rather well at Marian.

I'm sure, but usually DIII programs are less likely to poach other team's head coaches than DI teams are.

I can certainly see why one would want to coach at UWSP. At the same time, he managed to put a better team on the ice this season at Marian.

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

I had a feeling Aitken was gonna be highly sought after with some of these vacancies.

It's only fitting that UWSP hire someone from SNC to turn their program around after what Pointer alum Tim Coghlin has done for SNC...

I think Coghlin needs to go to Point and Mazzoleni can take over St. Norbert. You know, just to really screw with people.

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

I can't say I have been following the Michigan Tech openning very close but I would expect AJ Aitken would get strong consideration for that position as well.

With McKelvie getting the LFC job, when do we hear who accepted the Point postion?

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

UWSP has brought in another finalist in lieu of McKelvie. Chris Brooks, current head coach of the CHL's Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. Prior to that he was an assistant at Western Michigan for nine years.

Re: Coach Wil Nichol leaving UWSP

Any updates on the coaching selection? Last on campus interview was last week - thought they would have made an announcement by now....
