Climate Change 3: Whatever you do don't call it a twatwaffle

So last week I was in Alaska on a cruise. It was amazing, truly. I saw glaciers! What a humbling thing.

However, maybe 36 hours after I visited the Mendenhall Glacier outside Juneau, a big chunk broke off some side part and flooded the lake and river... and took out a handful of buildings and homes. The road I took to get there, the trail I walked, the beaches I sat on to get photos. All under several feet of water.

I saw the clip of home falling into water, nuts.

alaska republican response is “drill baby drill” I presume

I have seen so many comments on articles about the glacial dam failing where people are just like "They should have built a better damn" or "Should have upgraded it" or "This isn't a climate change issue its an engineering issue, a dam broke." It was bewildering.

Also, there is a huge backup to get into the Panama canal. The lake that supplies the water to raise and low the locks for the big Panamax ships is at a 4 year low. Because the lake is also a primary fresh water supply they have reduce the number of ships they can let through in a day, slowing things down for a least a few weeks (perhaps when a rainy season should begin? I am not certain). Comments I have seen regarding this include: Just pump in salt water, I thought the ocean levels were supposed to be rising, Fake news because how can there be low water when its just a ditch connecting the two oceans, and other similar arguments many of which somehow blame Biden or Buttigieg despite the fact that he US has no say over what happens in the canal.

Many are likely bots, operating from overseas farms (China, Russia, Iran, etc.). Crawling the web for news articles and generating/posting the same algorithmic replies from a trained word bank.

I'm sure many of them are. But at the same time, it is certainly on brand for what magats would be spewing as well.

I'm willing to believe 90% of all conservative comments on social media are Russian bots. The entire MAGAt movement is Putin (really Prigozhin) astroturfing.

That's how they tipped the 2016 election. It's pretty impressive they got a Russian agent into the White House. When this regime collapses, I hope somebody get their hands on the FSB files and goes public with them before TPTB "lose" them. It will be fascinating to see the GOP exposed as a traitorous entity in the service, perhaps unwittingly but certainly lucratively, of a foreign adversary.

Before I stopped reading Twitter, it was pretty obvious that the majority of comments (that weren't obviously human) were just Russian Troll Farm bots that Elmo bought when he realized the very bots he was whining about when he bought were the thing that gave Twitter value. They stoked engagement and vitriol. There was a nice balance of Left and Right versions that kept the site going at a nice clip. Now it is just Right Wing specific and he wonders why the model is failing...

It was cute though to see someone from Twitter on CNBC trying to pretend they are healthier/safer now than they were a year ago. As a commenter I read on another platform said "Sure, in the same way that if half the people stopped driving cars the highways would be safer to be on".

That someone is the CEO that Musk appointed, and continues to back the bus over with every time he posts.

Someone on Threads had a screenshot of her and goes "from this camera angle you can't see her nose grow."

glad you weren't there when it happened.

I thought that was who it was...but I barely recognized her without her long tweet chain rants about how Twitter is continuing to innovate and totally is not in any trouble whatsoever and no one is leaving and the engineers are great and for sure no one got screwed by the guy she is definitely not having an affair with Elmo Muskox!

(I have no idea if she is, but she often sounds like she is)

She's my age. Musk wouldn't touch her with Zuckerberg's dick.

God, of course she lives in Sea Cliff. I'm sure every area has a town where the absolutely most awful rich precious Karens live. Pro-BLM Liberals who make worried calls to the police if they see a black person near their lawn who isn't a servant? I guess for MSP it's Edina from what I have read here? Wellesley (Bos). Great Falls (DC). Atherton (Bay Area).

Well, for the North Shore of Long Island, which is itself that sort of an area, that town is Sea Cliff.

Don't me wrong, there are a couple houses there I would kill for, particularly as I know what kind of person owns them. But the idea that a sh-tbox average colonial with no view goes for 800k, and a shotgun shack goes for 500k, offends even my gilded Beltway sensibility. This town needs a HAZMAT site placed near it.

Thanks, me too.

No signal offshore and Holland America would be happy to charge you $NASA for crappy internet. So... I declined and only had any signal when we were within a few miles of a port. It was nice to unplug.

Musk isn't Trump...he is more like Clinton. He would bang the waitress at Waffle House if she told him he was a genius.

Circle Pines, MN, or a number of small enclaves around Lake Minnetonka. In many of those areas, if I don’t arrive in a plumbers truck, the police would make a meet-and-greet stop with me.

That's brilliant on their part. I really wish the media and EV fan boys didn't kill off the Chevy Volt because it "wasn't electric" enough for them as a hybrid.

The hybrid style is what I'm looking at for an EV because it alleviates range anxiety and does the best of both worlds.

Really impressed with Edison Motors out of British Columbia Canada and would love to see that setup in personal vehicles (and not just logging trucks).

Lol. I got into a discussion with a guy on Twitter about batteries. He claimed that lithium batteries are more cost effective than peaker plants. If we can't even support the lithium production needed for cars, grid-scale batteries are just a fever dream.
