Cjhl

Re: Cjhl

Now we're geting somewhere ! So these All Stars Colgate is bringing in might be just mediocre ? Or can I expect them to be "impact players" at least ?

Their numbers were phenominal for that league.

They'll probably be pretty good players. Really doubt they'll turn Colgate into Boston College or anything, though.

Re: Cjhl

Many of these kids have skills that don't transfer well to the style of play of some NCAA teams. You take a kid that filled the net in T2 and put him on a checking line in his first season of NCAA his numbers suffer. That does not mean the kid dosen't contribute. With his puck skills if he learns how to play defense he'll be a real asset in his 3-4th years.

Re: Cjhl

I'd be interested to know if any of these leagues is known for producing better forwards or better defensemen. Northeastern has brought in two defensemen from the CJHL, Darou and Fennell, but passed on the top scorer, Cowie, who is the son of a former NU player.

Re: Cjhl

The USHL equal to the CHL? No way. How many #1 overall 18 year old draft pics out of the USHL?

Early in 07-08 two USHL teams went to Quebec and each played two games against QMJHL teams. They didn't do badly, and the QMJHL teams had already started their season while it was preseason for the USHL. Equal? -- No, but not that far off.

Everyone passed on Cowie who led the CJHL in scoring all season. Maybe he's not a good enough skater for the Div 1 game despite his scoring touch, or maybe his academics wouldn't get him through the NCAA Clearing House. The Robertson kid, who decided to go to Ferris State, was regarded by many CJHL fans as the best forward this past season.

Re: Cjhl

The CJHL produces some good players, but primarily places kids on good D3 rosters. Schools like Oswego and Plattsburgh (who could skate with many lower level D1 teams) recruit pretty heavily out of the league.

That being said, the league is definitely a step down from the BCHL and AJHL (and obviously the USHL.) My opinion is that while much smaller than the NAHL, the level of play is pretty similar.

Re: Cjhl

I'm a long time reader of this board, and first time poster. I believe I can offer some insight into this discussion as I watch both these leagues regularly, and have seen most of the players the OP is asking about.

First and foremost, the level of play in the two leagues is very similar. The CJHL is a smaller league, with more parity (although, generally, only Brockville, Cornwall, and Pembroke are contenders for the league title). The OJHL is the largest league in Canada, and simply put, the bottom teams are terrible. There are, however, significantly more high end teams and players. In my opinion, the overall level of play for these two leagues is slightly higher than the NAHL, but obviously below the USHL.

As far as I'm concerned, the Spinks are without a doubt the best forwards in Colgate's upcoming class. Not only have they put up ridiculous numbers in the CJ, but they were also top line players at the World Jr. A Challenge (playing against the best Jr. A players in the world, including the USHL). Lough is a stud defenceman as well (I believe he won dman of the WJAC). In my opinion, he was possibly the best defenceman in Canadian Jr. A hockey this year.

I don't think Darcy Murphy is as good as his stats indicate. He is definitely a threat when he has the puck in the offensive zone, but he doesn't do anything else great. I don't really see his offensive translating to the college game, where everyone is bigger, faster and bigger. But, with that being said, there is no doubt he has the skill and talent to play D1 hockey.

What you're forgetting is that the Quebec's team best players were all away at NHL camps and the roster was filled with young prospects or Jr. A players. I think when the Waterloo Blackhawks play the Sudbury Wolves this year in Russia, it will be a much better indicator of play between the two leagues.
