CHL to NCAA Recruiting Megathread

this sort of situation was exactly what the inevitable lawsuit was about, because that sort of pedantic nonsense was not about to hold up in court. i do like seeing the USports transfers getting these chances, Serratorre just took it to a wild new level for fun and it worked.

we’ve even seen a transfer who never officially played CHL hockey but had such a standout season in USports hes going to NCAA. i’m guessing he had a similar situation with going to some CHL camp or preseason but never made the team. Luca Fasciano had a breakout rookie season and is joining BGSU. he’s the kind of guy that never would’ve been considered beforehand.
Isn't Fasciano going to Tech?

WHL has a multi-year deal w/ victory plus, not totally sure if it'll be entirely free like the playoffs were but it could be.
So Flohockey has been subscribed to at $150 for a year, or $12.50 per month. It seems like a lot of hockey for less than $0.50 per day!

I imagine I will mostly be watching OHL, QMJHL, and USHL. But it appears as though BCHL and the entire CJHL is also on Flohockey. It seems the NAHL is the only juniorA league that places D1 players regularly that is not on Flohockey. And hopefully I can see WHL on Victory+ for free. That would be pretty awesome.

Of course our incredibly well-run league led by our incredible commissioner now decides to move CCHA games from FloHockey to some streaming platform that no one has ever heard of outside of eastern North Dakota with no other content of interest whatsoever yet charge us nearly the same price we were paying for Flo. Sigh.

Speaking of podcasts, All 60 returns with an interview with Dan MacKenzie, the CHL president. Of course, casually rebranded as All 61... Not wholly though, because all indications are next year it will need to change to All 62.

I don't know if I've mentioned this podcast in detail or explained who this guy is, but it is hosted by Steve McLean, a Guelph Storm fan who last year joined the All-60 Club (he thinks there's 4 of them), having seen a game at every CHL arena. He has a few regular correspondents in each league, such as Cape Breton pxp Patrick McNeil, and they usually release weekly episodes.

MacKenzie goes over plenty in the interview, expansion, mem cup, state of media, the NCAA change etc. On the last one, some of his takes are definitely based on his own bias, but it would be weird it wasn't IMO. Just take it with a grain of salt. He's very professional with it all, worth a listen

What I am feeling is that the settlement has basically "hamstrung" the lawyers for the NCAA, they don't know what, if any, legal standing they have. I think they basically said if they are eligible to be playing college hockey in Canada, they are eligible in the States as well. I think U-Sports does have some "pro guidelines" you have to meet, but I am not sure what they are. I am sure our friends "north of the border" can fill me in.

You still have to have college eligibility left (I believe in BSU's case, one has two years and one has three) as their time playing U-Sports in Canada counts against them. I think you also have to still be within the age "window" for D-I athletics, which for hockey can run up to 25 or 26 depending on red shirts.

While I am glad my program is benefiting from taking the chance and seeing what sticks, I am not sure if I agree with it. This whole NCAA Settlement has a lot that needs to be worked out, yet.

In addition to what beaverhockeyfan said above: part of it is also the Tennessee basketball player with 1 year pro experience that got cleared. serratorre saw that and just said why not?

im guessing if Thornton spent most of the year in the AHL, he would've gotten denied, but since the ECHL salaries are so low it isn't too hard to clear that. i wonder if they need to sit out a few games like some of the euro kids with a few games of pro, or pay back some of that salary.

i keep joking that this shouldn't be surprising when BGSU has a player who has NHL experience.

Cam Robinson (EP) and Chris Peters (FloHockey) covered this in their podcast released this morning, link has the timestamp. Worth pointing out that Hudson Thornton was originally committed to UMD before joining the WHL.

Thornton likely has 4 years of eligibility since he never actually played USports yet, so he's not technicaly a transfer. He's considered a freshman. McClennon is listed as a junior, so 2 years is probably right.

Looks like it was more than just Tennessee that got pro basketball players through before it spilled over into hockey. From another message board:

Alon Michaeli:
Signed with the Colorado (CU) Buffs for the 2025-26 season, having previously played in Israel's top division and for Israel's U20 national team.
Ron Zipper:
An Israeli guard who will join the LSU men's basketball team for the 2025-26 season.
Omer Mayer:
A highly-regarded prospect who has committed to play for Purdue in the upcoming season, having competed at high levels in Israel and Europe.
Danny Wolf:
An Israeli-American star who recently completed a stellar season with Michigan, earning All-Big Ten Second Team honors, and is considered a top NBA draft prospect.
Yarden Garzon:
Another Israeli guard who has played in the NCAA for Indiana and has been a starter for the team
.

Not sure I'd really call it NHL "experience." Besides, he signed an ATO. Same with Connor Levis, who played 2 games in the AHL on an ATO. Those guys' experience is a lot different than spending an entire season playing ECHL or AHL (with signed contract).
exactly why it's a joke 😆

It doesn’t show preseason games being on FloSports.

Are they being streamed somewhere?
unfortunately not all of them. London Knights are streaming their game vs Sarnia on Youtube, Kitchener v Brantford will be on local TV. the saginaw/oshawa game wasn't streamed earlier, cant find anything about brampton/guelph
