Charleston or Savannah?

Thinking of taking a spring trip south. Wondering if any of you posters have been to Savannah or Charleston, and what you thought? Is one better for a good time, food, etc. than the other? How about things to see and do? Appreciate any input..:)

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

I have never been to Savannah but Charleston is one of my favorite places in America. Just oozes character and sense of place in the downtown. Fort Sumter is a neat historical attraction, as is the USS Yorktown.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

Why not both, spend a couple of days in each city? They are close enough together that you can drive from one to the other in less than two hours. (I can't remember the exact drive time, it's been a while since I visited either city).

If you have to pick one, go with Charleston. Zudnic is right with everything he noted. We have quite a few friends from around here (Charlotte, NC) that love to take weekend trips down there.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

Why not make time for both? They are only about 100 miles apart (2 hour drive according to mapquest).

Ive been to Charleston...when I was very young though. I dont remember a lot except some architecture (houses close together and interesting colors), the heat (it was August), and taking a tour of the USS Yorktown carrier (thanks Zudnic...couldnt remember the name) and a submarine. The tours were long for a kid of my age (6 or 7 years old) but for an adult (if they are interested in that stuff) it would be cool. I bet the food is going to be similar in quality. Both towns probably have some decent restaurants with french influences..and other styles. I think Charleston is home to a culinary school too.

If you are in Savannah you can probably see some of the stuff talked about in the book/movie Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil... thats about the only thing I know about Savannah.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

I have relatives in Charleston who rave about the city, however I have never been to either. However, I agree... if you can manage to do both, why not?

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

both.

Charleston has more to do, more shopping, etc

Savannah wins on charm.

the. food. is. amazing.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

We went to Charleston last year for a few days. Ate like royalty. Wanted to get to Savannah, too, but didn't have the time.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

Would probably fly down and not rent a car, as I hear both cities are walkable. Thus not able to see both. That's why I'm wondering which one has more to offer. Appreciate the feedback. Sounds like both are winners!..:D

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

i fly to charleston for kiawah island golf.
i fly to savannah for hilton head island golf.

i eat grits in both places (i like grits).
scrapple too (i reeeeeaaaaaallllly like scrapple).

ocean cse >> harbour town.
so go with charleston :D

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

Both are awesome southern cities. However, if touristy stuff is what you have in mind, and you have limited time, I'd go with Charleston. Savannah would definitely be worth a day or two of your time though.

We have a week in Kiawah booked for the end of July. :)

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

if you go to Charleston, eat at the Fat Hen. they make their own bacon. one of the best meals I've ever had. its not walkable you'd need a car or taxi from downtown. Blossom downtown had a lovely lunch.

Geneva's in Savannah has very good soul food in a down home atmosphere.
Clary's for breakfast just to say you did. and Paul Deens (Lady and Sons) for the fried chicken.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

Never been to Charleson, but Savannah is a great town. Stay in the historic district as outside of that is a little seedy, but inside of it the architecture is great as it wasn't burned down during the war. Lots of good bars (try the Six Pence or Churchill's), explore all of the squares (18 in all I believe, with great monuments and parks and fountains), and then hit the waterfront for some food. There's also that historic restaurant from the Treasure Island book who's name escapes me, as well as the obligatory Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil stuff (although at this point a lot of those people from the book have passed away).

For what looks to be about $21 you can take a train (Amtrak) from Charleston to Savannah. That would solve the problem of renting a car. Fly into Charleston. Spend a few days there. Take a train to Savannah. Spend a few days there. Then either fly out of Savannah or take a train back to Charleston to fly out of there.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

Oh yeah, and whichever city(ies) you visit down there, don't say something like "That thing moved faster than Sherman moved through Georgia." Trust me on this one ... :D

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

the house that Sherman stayed in while "visiting" Savannah has an early form of air conditioning that is pretty cool (so to speak). enjoyed that tour. and have a warm praline while visiting the waterfront.

Re: Charleston or Savannah?

I do declare, Savannah's had some trouble involving murders lately.
