CCHA Pick ‘Em 2024-25: 8.5 Teams This Year!

Our week 9 quad-winners with 17 points each are giwan, Lakerchum, PokeCheck and rookie StevieYnot ... congratulations to each of you! The top two contestants in the standings, TUPD and Bronco Hockey Fan, had identical scores so no ground was made up this week, however, with the weekly win giwan has moved into third ahead of mbenecke. Special stick taps this week go to LakerChum who was the only contestant to correctly pick the Bemidji/Nodak tie on Saturday and to BillyLP who was the only contestant to correctly call the Lakers sweep of the Tommies.

Now on to the bonus. At 8:23 of the third period (48:23 total elapsed time), Bemidji State's Isa Parekh scored Friday's game winning goal against North Dakota. On Saturday, the game ended in a tie so the game winning goal time is 65 minutes. Rounding up, we have (49 min + 65 min)/2 for an average GWG time of 57 minutes. giwan was the only contestant to close the deal and picked up 4 bonus points.

Not much in the way of movement in the Battle for the Beagan or the Race for the Sauer so refer to last week's standings as they're the same for this week.

The bonus is tired and needs a week off.

How can a GWG be arbitrarily assigned to 65 minutes (or any time) when there was no game winning goal in case of a tie? Perhaps if this Bonus is used again, the final GTG could be used to assure a second time point.

I needed to come up with something in case of a tie, 65 min was all I could think of though I did at least remember to include that in the bonus writeup:

Use overall elapsed game time. For example, if the average game winner is scored exactly 14 minutes into the second period (i.e. 6:00 left on the clock in the 2nd), you would enter 34 (20 min for the first period plus 14 min into the second). If the average game winner is scored 2:55 seconds into overtime, you would enter 63 (rounded up to the next minute).

Bonus Scoring: 5 points for a correct answer. Subtract 1 point per minute off until 0 (can't go negative). Time ends at 65 min (shootouts do not count, 65 minutes will used to compute the average if the game ends in an NCAA tie).

As I think about this more, I'm leaning towards your GTG suggestion. Will likely do that for next year. Good suggestion.

Congratulations to Puckdude40 who with 25 points is our week 10 winner! Shoutout to the entire field for correctly picking Mankato to best BG on Friday. Further shoutouts go to the 12 contestants who on Friday went 5-for-5 on the picks. I won't list them, you know who you are.

TUPD still maintains a lead in the Battle for the Beagan over Bronco Hockey Fan. The lead is up to 3 games/8 points.

With no bonus this week there weren't any changes in the Race for the Sauer. mbenecke is in the lead by 2 over MTUHuskyGold and 3 over Bronco Hockey Fan.

The bonus is back this week.

REMINDER: There is a Thursday game this week, don't dilly dally on getting those picks in.

Before we begin, there have been some personnel performance issues here at Pick 'Em HQ, primarily in the quality control department. An internal meeting between the manager of the QC team and HR took place this week and we have subsequently placed an individual on a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) to ensure we maintain the highest degree of accuracy that you've come to expect from us. With that said, the Saturday Laker/Mav game is being excluded from this week's picking matches but will count for bonus purposes. All scores have been adjusted to reflect this. Apologies to the group.

With that out of the way, congratulations to our week 11 winner Puckdude40 who wins the week with 24 points and has now won weekly honors two times in a row! Can anyone catch the 'dude? Honorable mention goes to MTUHuskyGold who was just short of weekly glory with 23 points. Stick taps echo throughout the arena for LakerChum who was the only contestant to correctly pick the Augustana/Anchorage tie on Thursday.

The leaderboard and Battle for the Beagan remain basically unchanged from week 10 with TUPD leading the way (for now...). Here's how the Beagan standings look:
Code:
Contestant Points %
TalonsUpPuckDown .695
Bronco Hockey Fan .669
Hockey John .643
giwan .643
puckdude40 .640

Moving on to the bonus, eight contestants each picked up 8 bonus points and everyone in the field picked up at least one bonus point. There were two 1-goal games at the end of regulation and 3 games that went into OT. As for the Draft Kings over/under, well, WOW! Who would have guessed that two defensive teams would see 8 goals in only the third period! Yeah, the over was the big winner here. This is how the bonus shook out this week, I guarantee if you submitted a form this week you'll find your name on the list:
Code:
Contestant DK O/U 1-Goal OT Total
beaverhockeyfan 6 2 0 8
Bronco Hockey Fan 6 2 0 8
GoNanooks 6 2 0 8
Icd80 6 1 1 8
John J. MacInnes 6 2 0 8
MTUHuskyGold 6 2 0 8
puckdude40 6 2 0 8

SweeneyHawksHockey 0 2 0 2
AgentClass 0 1 0 1
iwearpurple 0 1 0 1
Lakerchum 0 1 0 1
Manurespreader 0 1 0 1
PokeCheck 0 1 0 1
StevieYnot 0 1 0 1
Tommiealum93 0 1 0 1

For those that submitted yearly bonus goals in week 1, Michigan Tech and 9 goals are the new benchmark. The scoreboard has been updated to reflect the bonus points that will be awarded at the end of the season.

Lastly, it's hard to believe we're already at the holiday break so that means it's holiday tournament time! For the GLI and Kwik Trip Holiday Faceoff, we will go with the standard NCAA tie after 65 minutes option. Also, you'll see that matchups for the second day include all possibilities. Pick each game, I'll use only the actual games played. Week 13 forms will be available starting December 29.

Lastly, the staff here at the CCHA Pick 'Em wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. See you next year!

Bump. With one game remaining in week 12, the following contestants are currently batting 1.000 on the week:

Beaverhockeyfan
GoNanooks
Hockey Johhn
John J. MacInnes
MTUHuskyGold
Puckdude40

Congratulations to John J. MacInnes who was the only player to make a 100% clean sweep of the entire holiday week 12 schedule. That's a 22 point bonanza to fill his stocking. Well done! Stick taps go to mbenecke and potternmu who finished the week with 21 points. Bronco Hockey Fan makes up some ground on the leader with a 19-point performance.

Lots of week 13 entries in already, here are the links again. No bonus this week, the staff is still recovering from the holidays.

To close out the holiday week 13 holiday schedule we salute our tri-winners beaverhockeyfan, iwearpurple and mbenecke who each posted 16 out of a possible 22 points. Special holiday stick taps go to StevieYnot who was the only contestant to correctly pick Augustana to upset Colorado College on Friday night. There were no contestants who picked the Augie sweep this weekend. You-know-who still sits atop the leaderboard though mbenecke has been making a charge these past few weeks and now finds himself alone in third place up from his 6th place showing just three short weeks ago. That’s quite a run!

The bonus is back in a big way in week 14. In addition to our “regular” bonus opportunity, the staff at Pick ‘Em HQ has elected to spice things up a bit. So, for week 14, picking Northern Michigan will be worth double points (6 points for a regulation win, 4 points for an OT/SO win, 2 points for an OT/SO loss, zero points for a regulation loss). Good luck!

Congratulations to manurespreader who with 24 points is the week 14 winner! Special stick taps to manurespreader (again) who was the only contestant to pick Northern Michigan to upset the Mavs on Friday night and is therefore the sole winner of three extra bonus points. Jeers go out to the field as no one picked the Lakers to upset the Huskies on Friday. Lastly, I want to pay homage to Hockey John who made the gutsy decision to pick both Northern Michigan and Lake Superior this week. Unfortunately those picks were for Saturday and not Friday so no soup for you.

There was not a lot of movement in the standings or in the Battle for the Beagan. He who shall go nameless still leads in both though the field did creep a little closer this week. Here's the standings for the Beagan:
Code:
Contestant Points %
TalonsUpPuckDown .682
Bronco Hockey Fan .663
mbenecke .653
SweeneyHawksHockey .645
iwearpurple .645

Moving on to the bonus, there were 28 goals scored by the home teams and 29 goals scored by the away teams in CCHA league play this week. Congratulations to manuspreader who came home atop the bonus scoreboard this week with 6 bonus points aided in a large part by the NMU upset bonus. Fifteen contestants picked up at least one bonus point this week, here's how it looked:
Code:
Contestant Home Away NMU Total
Manurespreader 3 0 3 6
BillyLP 5 0 5

giwan 1 0 1

Soulbeaver 0 1 1
SweeneyHawksHockey 1 0 1

There was some jockeying for position in the Race for the Sauer after this weeks bonus play with MTUHuskyGold in first place with five contestants within 6 points of the lead. There are lots of opportunities for bonus play including this coming week. Here's how race looks after week 14:
Code:
Contestant Bonus
MTUHuskyGold 35
Bronco Hockey Fan 34
mbenecke 31
TalonsUpPuckDown 30
puckdude40 29
John J. MacInnes 29

Lastly, congratulations to the Tommies who laid a 9-spot on Ferris Friday night. They've now added there name to the yearly bonus pick along with the Huskies. Seven additional contestants are now looking at an additional 3 points at the seasons end.

The bonus is back for week 15 along with the NMU double bonus.

Lastly, we've been letting late entries slide past the deadline but going forward we at Pick 'Em HQ will be more stringent in reviewing late entries. Going forward please make sure to get your picks in on time. Thank you.
