TalonsUpPuckDown

Roll along you BG Warriors!
CCHA Pick ‘Em 2024-25

Welcome Pick ‘Em fans to the 2024-25 season of the CCHA Pick ‘Em contest - we’re now officially up to 8.5 CCHA league teams! Here are the rules:

Click the link, fill out the form (don’t forget your screen name), submit your picks. If you want to change any of your picks, fill out a new form. I will take the last submission as your final answer.

Scoring:
3 points for a win (regulation or NCAA OT)
2 points for a shootout win (CCHA conference games only)
1 point for a shootout loss (CCHA conference games only)
0 points for a loss (regulation or NCAA OT)

For OOC regular season and specific tournament games there will be the option to pick a tie. If the game ends in a tie at the end of the NCAA OT period, 3 points will be awarded. If either team wins, zero points will be awarded.

Periodically there will be a bonus question (or two...) worth 5-10 points. There are also two bonus questions available only in week 1 that will cover the entire CCHA regular season.

Only NCAA-sanctioned games will be counted (no exhibition games).

Playoffs will be mano-a-mano single elimination with seeding based on regular season finish. Playoff participation and seeding will be determined based on the number of participants and overall standings. More on the playoffs later.

Four awards are up for grabs:
o MacNaughton Cup – Regular season champion as determined by total points - Last Year’s Winner: Hockey John
o Mason Cup – Playoff champion - Last Year’s Winner: SweeneyHawksHockey
o Bill Beagan Trophy – Highest regular season points percentage (based solely on picks, no bonus) - Last Year’s Winner: Hockey John
o Jeff Sauer Trophy –Most bonus points - Last Year’s Winner: puckdude40

As much as I enjoy playing, I will not be joining this year. Too much going on in my life. Good luck, everyone.

And they're off! Coming out of the blocks hard with the first win of the season is the coach John J. MacInnes who led the way with 19 points. And with only 20 weeks to go he stakes his claim to the MacNaughton Cup. Lots of action on ties this weekend. Stick taps to BillyLP and John J. MacInnes who each correctly picked the Miami State/Ferris State tie on Saturday. Jeers go to the entire field as no one picked the Miami State/Ferris State tie on Friday. Not much else to crow about this week, looks like the contestants are still trying to get the feel of things.

No bonus next week as there are 14 games to pick.

There will be no stick taps, cheers, or other celebratory lauding for the week three winner who, with 31 points, was...me. Uhh, yeah. I'm not supposed to be winning my own contest here. We'll save the stick taps for BroncoHockeyFan and Critical Thinker who posted 30 points each and came in second on the week. Looking at other notable performances we see that zero contestants correctly picked Merrimack to upset the Mavs on Friday and zero contestants correctly picked the Vermont/Tommie tie on Friday despite Laker Chum picking three ties on the weekend. Hats off to Critical Thinker and Footballguy51 who were the only two contestants to correctly predict the Sharknado that swept through Sioux Falls on Saturday night.

John J. MacInnis' run atop the leaderboard, while thrilling, was short-lived as, well, yeah, you-know-who is now setting the pace in the race for the MacNaughton Cup. C'mon folks, you can do better.

No bonus for week 3 as there are still a ton of games on tap. REMINDER THERE IS A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME THIS WEEK! Get those picks in early.

Our week 3 winner showed complete puck mastery this week by posting 25 points on the scoreboard...congrats to Puck Master who now finds themselves in 4th place. There will be no mention of the contestant currently in first place in the race for the MacNaughton, but the staff at Pick 'Em headquarters will point out that Tommiealum93 and Bronco Hockey Fan are only 2 points back.

There were 8 ties picked this weekend but zero ties recorded on the week. Oops. We do want to salute Puck Master who was the only contestant to correctly pick Stonehill's win over the Lakers on Friday night (we won't call it an upset yet). In case you were wondering, zero contestants correctly picked Augustana to sweep Omaha.

No bonus for week 4, however, the bonus will make it's first appearance in week 5 so start getting mentally prepared.

Here's a little something to chew on during an early week thread bump. Through week 3 the field has picked CCHA and non-CCHA teams during OOC matchups 50-50.

Our week 4 quad winners (see what I did there) with 34 points each are BillyLP, giwan, manurespreader, and, uh...me. As in previous weeks, there will be no mention of who is atop the leaderboard in the race for the MacNaughton. Lots of time left for someone to catch fire. Special shoutouts this week go to puckdude40 who was the only contestant to correctly pick Clarkson to top Tech on Friday and BillyLP and Puck Master who were the only two contestants to correctly pick Ferris to beat Bemidji on Friday. Well played!

The bonus makes its first appearance of the year and you all know what that means. The Battle for the Beagan (highest pick %, no bonus) and the Race for the Sauer (most bonus points) are on! Don't be intimidated by the first bonus, lots of opportunities to make a statement here. Game on!

Congratulations to our week 4 co-winners Bronco Hockey Fan and mbenecke who each posted 35 points for the win this week. Honorable mention goes out to Hockey Jpohn who missed out on weekly glory by 1 point with 34 points. There weren't a lot of individual accolades worth mentioning this week other than with his weekly win Bronco Hockey Fan has now taken over the lead in the race for the MacNaughton, so game on everybody! And, not surprisingly, Bronco Hockey Fan is now leading in the Battle for the Beagan with a .717 pick percentage.

CCHA.com counted 86 assists on the weekend aided by Ohio State and their 9 goals on Friday. mbenecke led the way with 8 bonus points while a total of 9 contestants picked up at least one bonus point. Of course this means mbenecke sits atop the leaderboard in the Race for the Sauer.

Code:
Contestant Bonus
mbenecke 8
Lakerchum 7
Hockey John 7
Bronco Hockey Fan 5
TalonsUpPuckDown 4
MTUHuskyGold 4
puckdude40 3
Icd80 1
GoNanooks 1

With their 6 goals on Saturday, Michigan Tech sets the bar for the yearly bonus. This bonus will be added towards the end of the season. The last column in the standings lists everyone's yearly bonus goal picks so you can do the math if you'd like.

The bonus is back for an encore and should be pretty straightforward (but in the CCHA, straightforward doesn't always mean easy). Good luck everybody.

The week 6 results are in and congratulations are in order to our co-winners giwan and PokeCheck who each posted 28 points. Stick taps to giwan, StevieYnot and TUPD who went a perfect 4-for-4 on Friday and PokeCheck who went a perfect 4-for-4 on Staturday. Broken stick taps to Footballguy51 who also went a perfect 4-for-4 on Friday but, unfortunately, in the opposite direction. BroncoHockeyFan continues to sit atop the leaderboard and has now opened up a 7-point lead over the #2 spot held by Hockey John and TUPD who is currently the leader in the Battle for the Beagan. Here's the top 5:
Code:
Contestant Points %

Hockey John .677
Tommiealum93 .667

The bonus paid off bigly. Only 3 contestants failed to pick up any bonus points. With 44 goals on the weekend, the quad winners are AgentClass, iwearpurple, MTUHuskyGold, and PokeCheck. Here's how the bonus paid out:
Code:
Contestant Bonus
AgentClass 10

StevieYnot 5
beaverhockeyfan 4
Icd80 4
Manurespreader 4
John J. MacInnes 3
Tommiealum93 1

There is a 4-way tie in the Race for the Sauer with MTUHuskyGold, mbenecke, Hockey John, and puckdude40 each posting 14 bonus points. Here's how the top 5 shake out:
Code:
Contestant Bonus
MTUHuskyGold 14
mbenecke 14
Hockey John 14
Bronco Hockey Fan 13
puckdude40 12

The bonus is back again for week 7. REMINDER THERE IS A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME THIS WEEK!

EDIT: I messed up the order of Friday's NMU at Mankato option on the form. Should be NMU listed first, not Mankato. I got tripped up by this. Feel free to submit a corrected form as I always take the last submission. Apologies for the confusion.

Well, once again we'll forego stick taps for this week's winner who with 24 points happens to be, uhhh..., me. However, we will do a stick salute to Bronco Hockey Fan, John J. MacInnes, and MTUHuskyGold who each finished second with 23 points. Stick taps to AgentClass, GoNanooks, Hockey John, and MTUHuskyGold who were a perfect 4-for-4 on Thursday/Friday picks. Jeers to the field as zero contestants picked Northern to upset the Mavs on Saturday.

Bronco Hockey Fan still maintains a 6-point lead in the standings and is also in the lead in the Battle for the Beagan by only one point over TUPD with Hockey John and giwan close by.
Code:
Contestant Points %
Bronco Hockey Fan .724
TalonsUpPuckDown .719
Hockey John .691
giwan .687
Tommiealum93 .677

There were 85 penalty minutes on the weekend aided by 29 minutes from Friday's BG/Tommies match. Once again, no stick taps for the only contestant to pick up all 10 points, you can check the results below. Twelve contestants picked up at least one bonus point.
Code:
Contestant Bonus
TalonsUpPuckDown 10
BGSURICK 9
John J. MacInnes 9
puckdude40 7
Bronco Hockey Fan 6
mbenecke 5
MTUHuskyGold 5
giwan 4
Footballguy51 3
beaverhockeyfan 1
Hockey John 1
Soulbeaver 1

The Race for the Sauer sees 4 contestants tied for the lead with one contestant only 4 points back. The bonus is back again this week so we'll see if anyone can separate themselves from the pack.
Code:
Contestant Bonus
puckdude40 19
MTUHuskyGold 19
mbenecke 19

Week 8 is finally in the books so let's get to it. Our winner this week with 25 points is TUPD followed closely by mbenecke and soulbeaver who each had 24 points. Notable mentions and stick taps this week go to mbenecke who was the only contestant to correctly call Friday's Laker/Seawolf tie and to beaverhockeyfan and TUPD who went a perfect 4-for-4 on Saturday. Special shout out to BGSURICK who also went 4-for-4 on Saturday but, unfortunately, in the opposite direction. And with his win this week, TUPD takes over the top spot in the standings for the MacNaughton and the Beagan from Bronco Hockey Fan who, by the way, are the only two contestants posting a pick percentage of .700+. Here's the standings in the Battle for the Beagan:
Code:
Contestant Points %
TalonsUpPuckDown .721
Bronco Hockey Fan .700
giwan .667
Manurespreader .654
Tommiealum93 .646
Hockey John .646

There were a total of 42 penalties called in the six CCHA league games this week. Shout it out loud for Manurespreader and Soulbeaver who picked up all 10 bonus points this week. 17 contestants picked up at least one bonus point this week.
Code:
Contestant Bonus
Manurespreader 10
Soulbeaver 10
Icd80 9
John J. MacInnes 9
StevieYnot 9
TalonsUpPuckDown 8
mbenecke 7
Critical Thinker 6
MTUHuskyGold 5
BillyLP 4
Bronco Hockey Fan 4
Tommiealum93 4
beaverhockeyfan 3
puckdude40 2
GoNanooks 1
Hockey John 1
PokeCheck 1
mbenecke separated himself from last week's 4-way tie and now finds himself alone atop the standings in the Race for the Sauer.
Code:
Contestant Bonus
mbenecke 26
MTUHuskyGold 24
Bronco Hockey Fan 23
TalonsUpPuckDown 22
puckdude40 21
John J. MacInnes 21
Soulbeaver 20

The bonus this week may be confusing for some of the newer contestants, if you have questions post them and I'll help get you back on track.
