CCHA Pick ‘Em 2023-24: Augie's In!

Here are the second round results. For those who have made it to the Elite 8, the form will be available after the conclusion of Sunday’s Lakers/Tommies match.

What a second round! First off, congrats to our two Cinderella stories PokeCheck and Puck Master who, as the last two contestants in the tournament, pulled off upsets to advance to the quarterfinals. Also, stick taps to SweeneyHawksHockey for posting the highest point total (15) in the second round.

Critical Thinker posted the second highest point total in the round to upset top seed Hockey John 14-9 and will now face the number 26 seed PokeCheck who overcame all odds to be the 8 seed beaverhockeyfan by the impressive score of 12-6. Talk about leaving it all on the field! Is there anything left for the quarterfinals?

giwan posted 13 points, good enough for the third highest point total this round but ran into the SweeneyHawksHockey 14-point buzzsaw. In poker, they call this a cooler. SweeneyHawksHockey advances to the semifinals to face 24th seed Puck Master who won 9-0 over GoNanooks who mysteriously didn’t submit any picks. We’ll see if the Cinderella stories have more chapters to be written!

In the Mankato bracket, Bronco Hockey Fan edged out top seed puckdude40 12-11 in the closest match this round. SectionP will move on to the semis after dispatching Icd80 by a score of 13-9.

Top seed MTUHuskyGold outlasted manurespreader in the lowest scoring match this round. Win and advance is the name of the game, doesn’t matter how pretty it looks. Twelve seed mbenecke took care of 5 seed soulbeaver 12-6 to reach the semifinals for the 3rd time in 3 years.

The stage is set, the band starts playing, suddenly your heart is pounding, wishing secretly you were in the quarterfinals. Here’s how the matches stack up:

Bemidji Regional: (16) Critical Thinker vs. (26) PokeCheck
Mendota Hts. Regional: (2) SweeneyHawksHockey vs. (24) Puck Master
Mankato Regional: (14) Bronco Hockey Fan vs. (6) SectionP
Houghton Regional: (4) MTUHuskyGold vs. (12) mbenecke

Bemidji winner faces Hougton winner in the semifinals
Mendota Hts. winner faces Mankato winner in the semifinals

The quarterfinal round is complete. Right out of the gate we have an UPSET ALERT! with Poke Check's Cinderella run continuing via an 8-3 upset over Critical Thinker to claim victory in the Bemidji bracket. In the Mendota Hts. bracket PuckMaster's Cinderella run ended at the hands of SweeneyHawksHockey 9-3. Over in the Mankato bracket, we have another UPSET ALERT! Bronco Hockey Fan came away with the 9-6 victory over SectionP. Finally, in the third UPSET ALERT! of the round, mbenecke edged out MTUHuskyGold in the closest match, 9-8. On to the semifinals, here are the matchups:

(26) Poke Check vs. (12) mbenecke

We are down to the final two! mbenecke brought PokeCheck's Cinderella run to an end 7-6. On the other side, SweeneyHawksHockey took care of fellow MAC and Nacho member BroncoHockeyFan 8-6. It took 4,946 games to get to a final matchup that will be one for the ages. Fun fact: this matchup is a replay of the 2018-19 semifinal match which saw mbenecke walk away with a seat to the championship round against...BroncoHockeyFan who won it all that year. Will SweeneyHawksHockey finally get his revenge? Stay tuned and good luck to the final two!

Playoffs – Championship Round!

Thanks TUPD for a fun tournament. Maybe the glass slipper will fit for me next season.

The championship picks are in. Both contestants are seeing this game play out in similar fashion. It'll come down to the number of goals Tech scores and whether the game goes into OT. The staff here at Pick 'Em central ran the numbers and it looks like (12) mbenecke is the winner if the game goes into OT and Tech scores 3 goals or less while (2) SweeneyHawksHockey is the winner in all other cases given that ties go to the higher seed. Best of luck to you both!
Code:
Contestant Winner Away Home S/O OT
SweeneyHawksHockey Michigan Tech 4 2 0 0
mbenecke Michigan Tech 3 2 0 1

Congratulations to the 2023-24 Mason Cup Winner SweeneyHawksHockey who came away with the hardware after a hard fought 6-6 tie over mbenecke. This was one of the closest matchups in Pick 'Em history...had Bemidji scored to send the game into OT the order would have been reversed. But it was not to be so our final stick tap goes to SweeneyHawksHockey! Congratulations! And congratulations once again to our MacNaughton Cup champion and Bill Beagan Trophy winner Hockey John, and our Jeff Sauer Trophy winner puckdude40

Thanks everyone for another fantastic year of CCHA Pick 'Em. See everyone in the fall.

Congrats, Sweeney! And Thanks for hosting again, Talons! Enjoy the chaos that's sure to come about in this year's Big Dance!

Wow, what a run. Thanks to TalonsUpPuckDown for running the best Pickem around yet again. With the current state of the Miami hockey program this is about all I have to look forward to in the world of College Hockey. Always a great time and already looking forward to competing again next year.
