TalonsUpPuckDown

Roll along you BG Warriors!
CCHA Pick ‘Em 2022-23
Welcome Pick ‘Em fans to the 2022-23 season of the CCHA Pick ‘Em contest; we are eagerly awaiting Augustana's arrival next season! Here are the rules:

Click the link, fill out the form (don’t forget your screen name), submit your picks. If you want to change any of your picks, fill out a new form; I will take the last submission as your final answer.
If you are filling out picks for someone else, be sure to use the proper screen name – once the form is submitted no changes will be allowed.

Scoring:
3 points for a win (regulation or NCAA OT)
2 points for a shootout win (CCHA conference games only)
1 point for a shootout loss (CCHA conference games only)
0 points for a loss (regulation or NCAA OT)

For OOC regular season and specific tournament games there will be the option to pick a tie. If the game ends in a tie at the end of the NCAA OT period, 3 points will be awarded. If either team wins, zero points will be awarded.

Periodically there will be a bonus question (or two...) worth 5-10 points. There are also two bonus questions available only in week 1 that will cover the entire CCHA regular season.

Only NCAA-sanctioned games will be counted (no exhibition games).

Playoffs will be single elimination. Playoff participation and seeding will be determined based on the number of participants and overall standings. More on the playoffs later.

Four awards are up for grabs:
o MacNaughton Cup – Regular season champion as determined by total points -- last year’s Winner: giwan
o Mason Cup – Playoff champion -- last year’s Winner: TUPD
o Bill Beagan Trophy – Highest regular season points percentage (based solely on picks, no bonus) -- last year’s Winner: TUPD
o Jeff Sauer Trophy – Awarded to contestant with the most bonus points -- last year’s Winner: beaverhockeyfan

Good luck!

Bump. 22 contestants so far. Puck drops tomorrow. Don't let the fact that I'm the defending Mason Cup and Bill Beagan Trophy winner deter you.

The first chorus of stick taps goes to rookie Crocodile Tears who was not only the lone contestant to correctly call Saturday night's Ferris/Miami State tie, they went 100% on picks for the weekend collecting 17 out of a possible 17 points. Honorable mention goes out to manurespreader who went o'fer on Saturday but recovered nicely on Sunday. There are 12 contestants currently logjammed in fourth.

A special bonus is on tap for week 2. Place your bets!

Note for this year's rookie class: if you want to change picks, simply submit a new form, I always take the last entry as your final answer.

not sure how that happened but I'll take it

The week 2 co-winners with 30 out of a possible 34 points are CoHockeyMom and Critical Thinker. With this win, CoHockeyMom takes hold of the lead from Crocodile Tears who is now in a 3-way tie for fourth. Critical Thinker is lurking in second 3 points back.

This weeks bonus is a perfect example of why the Las Vegas strip exists--it was not built on the backs of winners. 31 contestants submitted entries this week. 31 contestants picked the over (5.5 goals) for Friday's Minnesota State/Minnesota game. There were a total of 5 goals scored in that game. Exactly zero bonus points were awarded. Wow. No bonus for week 3; we don't deserve one.

Note that there are two Thursday games this week. Get those picks in early!

Week 3 results are in and the winner is MTUHuskyGold who picked up 27 points this week. For the third week in a row we have a new leader -- Critical Thinker stands atop of the leaderboard with 59 points followed closely by rookies ClassyC with 55 points and Igrh with 54. Special shout out goes to Atanarjuat who was the only contestant to correctly pick the Saturday night UNO/LSSU tie.

No bonus this week.

Yet another Thursday game, so get those picks in early.

Glory and honor go to the week 4 co-winners, mikeeddy19 and Soulbeaver who each picked up 22 out of a possible 28 points this week. And with this win, mikeeddy19 adds his name to the top of the leaderboard with Critical Thinker, the fourth new leader in four weeks. ClassyC is knocking on the door only one point behind. Honorable mention goes out to SectionP who was the only contestant to correctly pick Anchorage's bounceback win over Northern.

I think the field has shaken off the week 2 bonus debacle, so week 5 sees the true start of the bonus season. With 12 games on tap plus a 10-point bonus, week 5 will likely be the biggest opportunity for points in a single week. Go get 'em!

Another week, another name atop the leaderboard. All hail ClassyC who is the lone week 5 winner picking up 36 out of a possible 43 points and now finds themselves alone atop the leaderboard in the race for the MacNaughton. Special shoutout to BGSURICK and Tommiealum93 who both correctly picked all six winners on Saturday and to Soulbeaver who was the only contestant to pick Alaska to upset Northern on Friday night. ClassyC also leads the way in the Battle for the Beagan with a .641 pick percentage. Seven contestants currently sport pick percentages greater than .600.

Code:
Contestant Pick %
ClassyC .641
BGSURICK .638
Critical Thinker .635
MTUHuskyGold .630

mikeeddy19 .603
<3_Blizzard .601

Providing the field with some time to catch their collective bonus breath after the week 2 drubbing appears to have paid off as both ClassyC and puckdude40 correctly picked 62 goals for the weekend and find themselves tied in the race for the Sauer. Additionally, 19 contestants (63% of the field) picked up at least one bonus point. Here's how the bonus paid out.
Code:

It was a big weekend for ClassyC!

The bonus makes a second straight appearance.

The winner of week 6 was Hockey John who rode the bonus wave to a high score of 24 this week. As for the bonus, well...yeah...no. There were 184 penalty minutes this weekend (thanks primarily to the first annual Festival of Game Misconducts that took place at the Slater Family Ice Arena) with Hockey John picking up 9 bonus points. The rest of the field was shut out on the bonus. More on that in a moment, but first a shout out to Maverick2009, mikeeddy19, and potternmu who picked up 21 out of 22 possible points with only Ferris' shootout win over Bemidji on Friday night standing in the way of pure picking perfection.

There was no change in the top three places on the leaderboard though Hockey John and mikeeddy19 now find themselves in a tie for fourth.

With Mankato's 7-2 win over St. Thomas, we now have some visibility into how the end-of-year bonus might look. I've updated the Team/Bonus Goal column to include the current bonus points that would be applied to each score if the season ended today.

I think what the field needs is a shot at redemption so we'll run the same bonus for week 7. There are only 6 games this week so it should be super easy, right?
