Yeah, there is no shortage of bad players out there, but I bring up Erdogan because Turkey is so strategically situated with a very complex role in the diplomatic, military and economic dynamics in the middle east, Europe, the rest of Asia, Russia, and the U.S. Trump must handle that situation expertly because Turkey is very important to our interests (as it is to many others, hence the complexity), and we have not been given much reason to believe that he is up to the task. In fact, judging by what we have seen of him these last 12 months, he is perfectly ill-suited, and our best hope is that he comes through on his promise and "hire the best people" who are capable of not f*king it up in a very bad way. The stakes in that game are huge. Even bigger than a 3:00 a.m. Tweetwar about ***-grabbing.

The trick is to get the whole family out on the streets. Just two hours a night of good ol' fashioned family (of four) together time, shouting down the evil conservative overlords five times a week, would get you an extra $70k a year, or $280k over four years. For the super ambitious, spending just 30 hours a week nets your family $210k/yr or $840,000 over Trump's first term.

The problem I imagine that would crop up then would be how to keep these folks from turning into Republicans for 2020. ;)

Fair enough. And I'm not trying to be argumentative, but I also want to remind people of the ongoing diplomatic struggles in the South China Sea. That, for me, is kind of like a silent or cold version of the Middle East. We've relied on the Philippines to be our ally in the territorial claims being made by China. That's a critically important stretch of water. Wikipedia says that around 1/3 of the world's shipping traffic goes through the SCS. That's a lot of commerce. Turkey is extremely important, but we often forget just how important this diplomatic battle is with China.

Good points dxmn. We do forget, especially since many of us, myself included, take a Eurocentric view of the world.

It's been suggested (mostly by righties but not quite entirely) that in January, Trump will ascend to the position of the Third Most Powerful Man in the World -- right behind Xi Jinping and Putin. I don't subscribe to that myself but I do see the point.

That's ludicrous. The POTUS will likely be the most powerful person in the world until the day I die. Putin is not that powerful. The media plays him up like he actually impacts the world as much as the US does. He doesn't. People can make arguments that he got Trump elected but that's balderdash as well.

It's China, the EU, and the US. Period. And really the EU and China are still playing second fiddle to the US.

Regarding president Trump's foreign policy. He has certainly taken a soft stance with Russia. And there are questions of whether Mike Pence will be the most powerful VP in history (as Trump was willing to position with other candidates). He seems to have no stomach for China, Russia, Turkey, etc treatment of their own people. After some bluster, Trump may have a particularly weak foreign policy...which by default pushes power held by foreign leaders upwards.

It will be interesting to see how he delegates. He is not suited for complex diplomacy, so he should rely heavily on others, and he has, all along, said he would hire the best people for those jobs. But he is so self-centered and arrogant, I'm not sure he will be able to listen to counsel.

I see no evidence based on hires 1 and 2 that he has a clue who the best people are for anything.

I was watching the show "Designated Survivor" last night and kept thinking to myself - "How would Trump handle these situations?" I get that it's a TV show, but there was one scene where Kiefer Sutherland (as the president) was talking to his wife up in the residence about a family matter and was called away for a meeting about an international crisis. Now, the crisis was TV fantasy, but just the idea that a president needs to be on call like that made me wonder if Trump would be like "Wait, what? I'm off duty now! What do you mean I have to interrupt something I'm doing for this??!?"
