Reagan 1980: 50.8% (in a race with a 3rd candidate whose name some people actually remember)

John B. Anderson. My mother voted for him. I think he ran as an independent with paleo-conservative leanings.

He missed out on being my first presidential vote by about 100 days.

He took enough votes from Carter to make it a landslide for Reagan (sort of what Ross Perot did to Bush41).

"Polls found Anderson voters nearly as likely to list Reagan as their second choice as Carter."

If he had not been in the race, Reagan would have probably been around 53%, and the electoral college would not have shifted at all.

2014 Midterms - Nobody likes Congress, yet they keep getting returned to office.

Maybe we're the parole board and Congress is the prison. We feel they're too dangerous to let out into mainstream society and its best to keep them in a confined place where we can monitor their behavior.
It's the mentality of Congress as a whole is the problem, but it's not due to the person my district sent there. When polled as a whole body, approval ratings are in the teens. When individual members are the subject, they're often in the forties and fifties.

I'm curious what people want Congress to do. "Act"? What does that mean? When Congress is split effectively 50/50, the only way to act is to compromise. But when you ask people if they are willing to compromise, they aren't, and if a Member compromises he risks being primaried. Seems to me Congress is in fact exactly representative of the wider public right now.

Comedian Emo Phillips (youtube him if you are not familiar with his delivery - extremely odd, grating at first, but it grew on me) had a line that could be adapted here: "I pray a simple prayer every morning. It’s an ecumenical prayer. Whether you’re Catholic or Jewish or Muslim or Hindu, I think it speaks to the heart of every faith. It goes 'Lord please break the laws of the universe for my convenience. Amen.'”

I think what most people want Congress to do is implement whatever laws would be of personal benefit to them and/or would advance their personal agendas. Unless and until that happens? What a bunch of useless, incompetent blowhards!

Not entirely true. I expect the people there to act like adults and compromise to get things done. I expect in this compromise a few things I really, really want will probably go away and things I really, really hate are going to become law. However, I would be much more satisfied to get half of what I want than nothing that I want. I think if pressed, most people would feel the same way.

Good luck when the sensationalism of the media and the shouter punditry class do everything they can to gin up everything into a scandal or an atrocity.

I wish I shared your optimism!

My sole reaction to the fappocalypse is that, unlike 99.9% of all actresses and models, Kate Upton is legitimately pretty.

The rest of them are just the usual boobs on a stick.

So, you don't like how Hillary looks in addition to the woman rates as a candidate?

Won't matter in KY as it won't matter if same thing happens in MD or NYC.

Oh, it won't matter for KY -- nobody's changing their vote there. But it might cleave the establishment and libertarian wings of the GOP further apart. Stuff like this doesn't happen in a vacuum -- there's always other people involved, and sometimes those people can be surprising. The "atmosphere of institutional misconduct" problem always threatens to overflow the banks of the state level and flood the national party. Typically, incumbent parties are more vulnerable, but the GOP is looking more and more corrupt, too.

By extension, do you thing Gov. Cuomo is going to stumble?
