At my 2003 graduation from RPI at was then known as Ned Harkness Field, on a beautiful mid-May day, I had a speaker who delivered one of the best speeches that I have ever heard. That man had his head on straight, and seemed to have a great ethical standard that he held himself and his co-workers to. I remember thinking to myself that if I ever make it in the business world or whatever field I choose, I hoped that I could conduct myself with the same character that he does, and that I will try. That man just completed the riskiest operation of his career, and I remember him saying that he didn't feel nervous, and that he was getting paid to not be nervous and do a job to the best of his ability. He did, and the result was the world's first successful operation of twins conjoined at the head. That man was Dr. Benjamin Carson. Granted, I haven't listened to any of his political views and the like, but if he still has the same ethical makeup as I thought he did back then, we may see a revival of this country.

Edit: I don't classify myself as democrat or republican. I'm just making an observation.

His political positions are about the same as Ted Cruz's. Just as you wouldn't want me performing neurosurgery, you don't want him anywhere near the nation's economy.

People think because Ben Carson was a neuro-surgeon he's going to be smart about everything. And Ben does too. It's called "Shockley Syndrome," after William Shockley, co-inventor of the transistor and untrained but self-appointed genetic expert who believed blacks are inherently less intelligent than whites.

Unfortunately, people who are used to everybody recognizing and celebrating their brilliance at A get used to it and start to think they're brilliant at everything. But people who are really smart at A can be really dumb at B.

Would you prefer people who are brilliant at nothing? That seems to be what we get all too often, so I'm open to taking a look at other folks.

I really don't think Ben Carson is putting his name into any big elections. He's more just commenting on what he sees and his experiences and then others run with it, applying various motives and aspirations to his comments.

Ben Carson, the former neurosurgeon turned conservative sensation, is taking a major step toward a 2016 presidential bid by forming a political action committee and selecting the man who would run his campaign, The Washington Times has learned.

Emerging from two-days of meetings with supporters in Palm Beach, Fla., Dr. Carson told the Times on Friday morning he has selected Houston businessman Terry Giles to be his 2016 campaign chairman should he run and approved the formation of a PAC called One Nation.

“Now is the time to start all of the appropriate exploration and investigation, and put down the structure that is necessary,” Dr. Carson said in a phone interview.

Asked about the likelihood he will run for president in 2016, Dr. Carson said: “I would say we are definitely a step or two closer than we were a year ago.”

He's on the Nutter Flight Path: (1) make outrageous statements to get noticed, (2) get regular gig at Fox to develop brand recognition among the base, (3) form an exploratory committee. He's going to run.

I like the idea of smart people getting into politics. Carson might be deranged, but as a rule the more smart people in office, the better.

There are always two problems: (1) why would anybody with any brains debase themselves to be a politician?, and, the bigger one, (2) dumb people do not like smart people -- they find them either scary or uppity, and by definition 50% of the population is in the bottom half of intelligence. Democracies get leaders who the average voter likes to identify with, and that means tall, nice hair, and not too smart.

Sure, but if anything this really represents the polarization of the parties. It wasn't that long ago that there were Blue Dog Democrats who could get elected in red states and Rockefeller Republicans who could get elected in blue states. It's not the voters who are diverging, it's the candidates. The argument I have heard is it's because gerrymandering has locked down seats so safely that candidates can ignore the other side and run far, far to the fringe, but that would only explain Representatives.

I'm sure many of these arguments are chicken and egg. For instance, voters are also self-segregating -- moving to environments they like rather than fighting to change the environment they are in. That sounds like it's just a function of increased mobility and the de-regionalization of jobs. Used to be if you were a fisherman you had to stay where the fish were, so if you were in the political-cultural minority you were much more invested in changing your community. Now, if you're say an IT professional there are a lot more choices, some of which come ready-made with a friendly environment, so why and stay and fight?

Repeal the 17th amendment? Would that make Senators more accountable? I've heard both sides of the argument and it's an interesting debate.

I don't like the 17th. It turned the Senate from the chamber of higher debate with a greater intended outlook at the long-term health of the nation to simply the chamber with fewer immediate political debaters that serve longer terms.

That's a gimmick so that PACs would have fewer people to bribe.

I do love the symbolism that Gilded Age economics is being accompanied by attempts to literally gut Progressive Era advances in democracy. It's like they're running the script of history backwards. But to get the chronology right you hafta repeal the 19th Amendment, first.

Sometimes I wonder whether Twentieth Century civil rights was all just a temporary sop by the ruling class, tossed to us because they were terrified of Communism and they temporarily needed our mass labor for factories and armies, and now that that's over they are taking down the scenery, pulling back the curtains, moving the tables and chairs out of the way, and showing us the brick wall at the back of the theater.

We've still got the vote, though, and until they wrest that away they can eat a big ol' bag of d1cks.

Get real, Kep. Following your logic, we might as get rid of the 15th and 23rd amendments!

The 17th had nothing to do with disenfranchisement. You know that.

Dr. Carson stands by his statements comparing the US government to Nazi Germany and calling the ACA the worst thing to happen in the US since slavery.

But he's clearly ready to be president...
