Campaign 2016 Part XVII: If debates are great theater, I think this one closes early

Don't hold your breath. The TV media spends its time dissecting and over-analyzing the outrageous Trump statement du jour, instead of challenging him on his full body of claims throughout the campaign that have yielded 44 pants-on-fires, more than 40 four-Pinocchios and huge numbers of hours for the fact-checkers whose work proves that Cruz was right about him ("a pathological liar") and so was Fareed Zakaria ("a bulls**t artist"). It's quite clear the TV guys lack the balls to ask Trump why someone claiming he alone has all the answers is so reliant on lies that it's tantamount to creating his own false reality. And they certainly lack the guts to say "I'm going to ask the question again. This time I expect you to address the question and provide specifics. This isn't an infomercial."

Matt Lauer is getting destroyed this morning for spending 13 minutes on e-mails (one of which now shows Powell DID advise her to use her own server), then allowing Trump to lie to his face about opposing the Iraq War with no challenge whatsoever from the "journalist".

However, while many liberals are furious at the double standard, take a step back a minute. The aforementioned Dukakis or Kerry wouldn't have said boo about that do to their reverence of the national media. With the Clinton people there's no holding back. THAT's the kind of campaign the Dems need, and its also why Hillary was the best choice this year. We have no guarantee any other Dem prospect would have handled the media's fear and coddling of GOP presidential candidates with an all out counter attack like the Clintons do. Like it or not, that's exactly what the party needs to compete against a lunatic.

Can you show me the exact statement in the email where Powell tells HRC to use her own server? I freely admit that my own bias may preclude me from seeing where Powell comes right out and says "Use your own server Hillary". Help me out.

He's saying using private e-mail. Not sure of his (or Hillary's) knowledge of the server as that's more for the tech people to set up.

Style wins over substance. Trump has style. I personally thought Hillary destroyed him last night. Everyone has it a tie. How in the hell can he tie ripping the Generals, ripping the intelligence community, and sucking off Putin?

Simple. Style over substance.

I'm glad Hillary explained the email thing. I already knew that answer and knew it to be true and correct. Got news for you Hillary. No one gives a **** about the truth or your answers.

The press should care. I understand Trump and his team are going to spin the issue to their advantage -- that's their job. But the press is supposed to get to the facts. Instead, they have decided that the way the public perceives Hillary is what they are going to concentrate on, which means anybody can make a new charge and they'll then cover that because it revives what is in their mind the real issue.

By making the impact of the emails the story, they create the impact of the emails.

They basically possess a rheostat to control Hillary's popularity. If she pulls too far ahead they turn the dial and pull her back. When Trump pulls even they turn it the other way to allow her to pull back ahead. They get their horse race and their ratings.

Well if they are going to let Drumpf outright lie she might as well start bsing too. From now on she should just say "what emails?" ;)

Not that Lauer has ever really been a journalist, but still that is a pretty pathetic effort. You have a major party candidate caught lying, the ultimate gotcha moment, and you let it go.

Sica,

Excellent effort on the troll...problem is everyone knew it was troll based on the link. Still though I bet a few jumped :D

They used to be better at hiding the games they are playing (I mean we knew but at least tacitly they denied it) but now they just out and out make it obvious the games they are playing. They are even so cavalier about it they let Nobel Prize winners rip them for it in their own forums. (Krugman and the NYT) They have basically become as worthless an useless as everyone has joked they have been for decades. They are banking on the idea that the people dont care or are too stupid to see what is going on and whats worse is they arent beholden to anyone but their corporate overlords. The Fourth Estate is no longer a check for the system, it is just a long string of clickbait Gawker type articles written by two bit reddit clowns.

What is this "The Press" you speak of in present tense? That entity is long dead and buried.

It is replaced by "advocacy journalism*". <-- That genre can't "report" on anything that isn't handed to them as a "press release" (aka spin document).

*I had to say "journalism" because I can't, with a straight face, call those people "journalists."

Twitterverse was not kind to Mr. Lauer..

Even though I hate Fox and the generation of mouth breathers it has spawned, I don't think the Partisan Press is to blame. That has always existed. I blame the mainstream press who followed the dollars and became entertainers. CNN is the worst example, but the big three networks and most of the newspaper press are also to blame. Trump is but the chickens coming home to roost -- this has been in gestation for a long time.

When fascism came to America it was wrapped in the flag and carrying a copy of Nielsen Media Research.

I never pictured her as a Vandal. Probably a Gaul.

For the record, Sarah Palin is a Vandal. She earned that the same time I did. Not a full Vandal, but close enough.

Stein isn't a Vandal. Maybe a vandal. But not a Vandal.

Stein is an Ostrogoth. They wound up in Spain and North Africa and got civilized.

Palin is definitely a Vandal. No morals, and can't understand any mechanism more complicated that a bottle opener or a blackjack.

(alfablue is talking about the University of Idaho)

As for Gary Johnson and Jill Stein, the less attention given to those political 16 seeds, the better. There's a reason they're on the fringe.

I got it, albeit afterwards.

I didn't know Sister Sarah ever graduated anywhere. I thought she went immediately from dropping out of her sixth school to pulling trains for NBA prospects as a pair of SCTV sports boobs.
