BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

Last year we did OK short-handed. Paul Kerins sat the game out because he had to explain to Union why scoring 2 quick goals in HFH is a bad idea, and I think Jerry D'Amigo was out for WJC purposes. Bergin was also out, and Beauregard had played that game. Looks like both teams are playing a bit beat up.

I am fairly sure JP sat colby cohen also. Last years game was one of the uglier games of the year. Both teams at times played like they really didn`t care all that much. I have a feeling this years contest will be alot more intense.

The food is definitely worth it. Best barbecue I've had. And, there's soooooo much food. Just saying that people shouldn't show up at 2 and then wonder why they don't make it in time for the game.

It's probably awful compared to the original one here in town.

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

Any recommendations for places to grab a bite in the area? Gonna be looking to grab lunch and/or dinner out there.
For god sakes stay away from Dinosaur, you'll never get in unless you leave now.

- Plum Blossom if you want Chinese. Just above RPI campus at 685 Hoosick Road (Rte. 7).

- If you like wings you MUST go to the Ale House (Chipotle - Tequila wings are outstanding) and a dozen or so killer craft beers on tap.
It ain't very fancy, but for killer wings and beer it's tops. 680 River Street in Troy

Plum Blossom I've never had. If you want college-style Chinese food (aka dirt cheap), Fortune Star in Cohoes or whatever they call Lee Tang now up the hill. Pizza Bella (now called Big Apple Pizzeria, mentioned before) is one place I really enjoy for pizza, although there's also I Love's downtown.

Plum Blossom isn't cheap (nor is it terribly expensive) but is very good restaurant atmosphere with good food at a convenient location.

Add us to the ones who like their food. Nice atmosphere as you mentioned and fairly reasonable prices.

South-west corner of campus (8th and College), whereas the field house is on the opposite corner of campus. However, Troy isn't all THAT large, so it's just an easy drive down the hill and over a bit.

I'd call it part way down the hill as downtown Troy is still quite a bit lower.

Go to Ale House, then go down a few doors to Bella Napoli for an italian snack for the game. But buy some coffee or a drink from the concessions to support whatever team is working it.

Bella Napoli-Oh yeah---some of the best pastries on the planet!

Coming over here to maybe try and talk hockey, last nights Without A Peer podcast touched on something I thought was very interesting, that being why does BU keep scheduling RPI. I can see it from a travel standpoint of a one day trip for the Terriers and a way to reconnect with the alumni base out here, but I have not been around as long as Ralph and Dr. D to have gone through/see the ECAC break up and Hockey East form. So I guess Im throwing this out to them and anyone else who can make a rational, logical, statement of why BU and RPI keep playing year after year?

Sounds like a good question for me to ask Parker when we talk to him this week. Will have a response either here or in the weekend preview. I imagine proximity has something to do with it, along with the fact it's an old rivalry, and a competitive one at that (BU holds a 33-27-3 edge all-time).

Buddy Powers is a BU alum, so it was natural to schedule us back then. They continued doing so after he left. I think that we are not playing them as much as we used to (since games like in Denver shouldn't count). If RPI can regain its prominence, they will be more interested in continuing to play us.

Re: BU @ RPI, Saturday 12/11/10

In the old days it was one of the most heated rivalries in college hockey. I think BU deserves a world of credit for continuing this tradition. Now if we can only convince them to come to Troy for the Holiday Tournament every so often-we could have a decent field and a top notch tournament. Over the years some of the best hockey i have seen has been in RPI-BU games.

We'd also have to consider that that would mean 2 NC games. Right now, Hockey East stands at 7 non-conference games. Two for BU are for the Beanpot. Playing the western teams usually means a weekend stand, so those are sets of 2 games there. Having the one game stand against an ECAC team works out pretty well not only for scheduling that 34th game, but keeps the old rivalries alive as you had mentioned. I think the 2008-09 meeting just happened to be coincidence. I also enjoy seeing this game take place, and look forward to another two year set.

Actually, here's a thought: Given the "Red Hot Hockey" seems to be an every other year norm at MSG (BU vs. Cornell), maybe it would make sense to see if we can get an every other year series going as well?
