BU: Offseason '22: Build The Boats

Apparently it's Montgomery. per Joe McDonald on Twitter. IMO the best choice out of the ones that have been mentioned (Quinn, Leach, Vellucci)

Well, Montgomery is more qualified than Quinn at both the collegiate and NHL levels so I would be in favor of that. Provided he's gotten his act together off the ice anyway...

I agree with that but can't help but think as a recently recovered alcoholic Boston has to be one of the worst jobs the guy can take. Terrible team management and no shortage of knuckleheads amongst the fans and the local media.

IIRC, it was Drew Melanson on the 1st line w/ Greenway (playing out of position at Center) and Tkachuk. Bowers centered the 2nd line w/ Harper (before his illness) and Bobo. Cockerill moved up to that line once Harper was out.

Well, Sean has the numbers, so I’m wrong, wrong, wrong. This is what happens when you grow old. You forget line combos and have no idea who the Alex Coopers of the world are.

Maybe so. But, again coaching was not the problem.

I never said it was. But like it or not, Cassidy is gone (and Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito are not walking through that door). We get it, the problem is who they are drafting/developing. My only point was I thought it was a good hire.

Heard they'll open the season w/ Bentley, they'll also likely play in the frozen four which is apparently counting as an OOC ... UMass v BC is frozen fenway and looks to be counted as OOC from UMass schedule.

A little behind with the schedule thread spreadsheet but should have it updated tomorrow evening.

I believe Frozen Fenway would be the same weekend as the Dessert Classic or whatever. If we're looking at the same day BC and Umass ae playing...

Don't they usually keep the rink up for, like 10 days? The first time they did it, the game was on New Year's Day and the BU-BC game was January 7th or 8th, and there were games scheduled after it. I wonder if they got it up early enough BU could play prior to New Year's. That said, was there ever any conversation BU would be playing at Fenway again?

Such fabulous news about Mike Grier. Very happy to see that. And if San Jose is looking for a new coach, maybe Mike can just promote former Terrier captain John Mccarthy who is the head coach of their AHL team. One national champion to another!

Hey, where is Steve Greeley now?

Hey, where is Steve Greeley now?

Greeley was hired as Director of Hockey Strategy/Scouting and Development for the Dallas Star last January. https://www.nhl.com/stars/news/dall...-strategyscouting-and-development/c-329438386

In the press conference announcing his appointment, Grier was asked about the team that produced this crop of hockey minds. [Grier, Drury NYR, Hynes NSH, Pandolfo BOS/BU, Kelleher MINN Dir. of Scouting, etc.]

“It all starts with Coach Parker. He was the leader of those teams, he believed in the team first. [It was a ] Very unselfish group, but he pushed everyone to be the best version of themselves they could be. He believed in us, held us accountable and, I think, we all learned from that. We learned from the ups and downs, the wins and losses. And it’s just a culture he built there that was unbelievable.

“We won a national championship. We lost the year before in the finals, and we came back. No one complained. We had Chris Drury on the fourth line. Everyone knows the career he had. He was on the fourth line, never said a word. Jay Pandolfo was on the third line, a two-times Stanley Cup winner. Never said a word. No one ever complained about their ice time, or was looking for credit, or put the blame on anyone else. That’s a testament to Coach Parker. It’s probably all those lessons and what we learned that’s why we all advanced in hockey.”

More on the blog.

Great quote. That 95’ team was such a good group of guys. No shortage of leadership and it showed on the ice.

Fun fact about the '94-'95: Nine skaters earned All-American recognition during their BU careers (not necessarily in '94-'95): Grier, Drury (3 times) O'Sullivan, Brennan, Coleman, Kelleher (2), Linna (2), Pandolfo and Joubert. Ten, if you count McKersie who sat out the season after his horrific bicycle accident.

Besides his news report on Grier, Neal Boudette also wrote a profile piece on him for The NY Times, which includes this very cool anecdote:
When a not-in-shape Grier didn't dress for the season opener his freshman year, he spent it in the stands with a recruit who was making his visit to BU--Chris Drury. First of many times their careers would intersect.

3 Terriers drafted today. Ryan Greene 57th, Lane Hutson 62nd, Devin Kaplan 69th. All three should have the ability to make an impact right away. Side note, Chris Heisenberg has Jack Gorton coming in 2023-24. It seems the incoming class will be:

Lane Hutson
Quinn Hutson
Ryan Greene
Devin Kaplan
Jeremy Wilmer
Lachlan Getz
Another goalie? (Due to Abel transferring)

One other fun fact is that the same year that McKersie was a second team All-American, his partner Herlofsky was second-team All-Hockey East.

Also, with all those All-American's one player that isn't on the list but was as fun as anyone to watch was Shawn Bates. Same year as Grier. I would love to see him in today's NHL. He could be a Gaudreau-type of impact player. Well maybe one notch down, but his speed/acceleration was so much fun to watch.

A lot of positives here. No first-rounders which has to help with the potential for staying at BU beyond one-year. Also takes the pressure off if anyone gets off to a slow start (won't feel like they need to go a different path like Tyler Boucher, Kieffer Bellows) Wilmer will likely be a 4-year player, which is great news.

Having Fensore and Lane Hutson on the same team will be incredible. Should help the PP for sure.

Also, has BU ever had two non-twin brothers be freshmen in the same season?

What Lachlan wants, Lachlan... (sorry couldn't resist).

Hard to believe that Jeremy Wilmer was not drafted again in his second year of eligibility
I know he is small but he led the USHL in scoring this year

I think for a team to draft a guy in his second year of eligibility, there has to be a very compelling reason. Sure, leading the USHL would seem to be one, but he doesn't have a lot of size, which probably negates that.

I thought the same thing but it could be a positive for BU. There are some players who excel in the USHL but don’t have the size or speed for the NHL so they wind up staying in college for 4 productive years. Andrew Miller at Yale comes to mind.
