BU 2020-21 Season: The Road to … Nowhere?

Funny you should ask, Bomber. The Terrier Hockey Fan Blog is running a series of posts marking the 50th anniversary of the '70-'71 national champs who went 13-0-1 out of the gate. They finally lost at Cornell on January 23rd. We're posting game recaps on the dates they were played, some with comments from the players, along with a few feature pieces. In a Q&A with Jack Parker (questions sadly intended for Jack Kelley), he called the '70-'71 team the best BU team ever, largely due to its 40% power play, which produced more goals (65) than the total yielded by BU (60).

The closest I can think of in "my time" is the 97-98 team. Didn't they go something like 18-1 to start the season?

BU went 11-1 before 2 ties and then their second loss that season, with the loss the fifth game overall. You are more likely thinking of the 1995-96 season when BU went 18-1-2 before a tie and back-to-back losses, with the loss the fifth game overall. BTW, both losses were to UNH at Lake Whitt, the one in 95 the first game at the arena in OT and the one in 97 a bad 5-0 loss.

The last time BU was undefeated at the holiday break was 1978-79, when they were 7-0 before losing the opening game of the GLi vs MTU. BTW, 6 of those 7 games were at WBA that season. The other seasons BU was undefeated at the holiday break were: 77-78, 5-0 on the way to a 21-0 start; 75-76, 4-0 before losing the opening game of the GLi vs MTU; 71-72, 7-0-1 before winning the SIT semifinal then losing the championship game; 70-71, 6-0-1 on the way to a 13-0-1 start; 66-67*, 9-1 with the loss to the Eastern Nationals (a non-collegate team), on the way to a 12-1-1 start; 64-65, 10-0 before losing the first game of the BAC; 50-51, 3-0 on the way to a 4-0 start; 45-46, no games before 1946; 32-33, 2-0 before losing their next game; 26-27, 0-0-1 before losing their next game; 25-26, 2-0 before losing the next game; 1919-20, no games before 1920; and 1917-18, no games before 1918.

Loss of the strength coach will be a huge problem.... Guys literally come and came here to play because of him. I imagine others like Skoog who went back overseas for the break will likely not return as well and I wonder who else. Sadly the hockey program is no longer a priority for the administration when so much of your money is now brought in by full paying foreign students.

As we head into the new year the lack of information about the BU hockey program is alarming
There has been no communication from the athletic department, coaching staff or connected sources (terrier hockey blog) about the status
Have any players left since the season started
Have we picked up any of the opt outs-- BC shored up their only weakness with a defender from Yale and others teams are snatching up players
We have generally failed with the graduate transfers so this is not surprising

BU is only team in hockey east not to have played- the schedule list Northeastern games this weekend with Friday on NESN
Is this happening?

Support for the team has faded in past years and lack of communication furthers this perception

The terrier hockey blog now says January 8th is opening day
Last D-1 school to start playing

No news because ... there is literally no news.

From a Northeastern alum who loves to hate BU: I take absolutely no pleasure in reading this but I fear the handwriting has been on the wall for awhile. The intra-city hockey rivalry between NU, BU, and BC is good not only for hockey but also (whether certain administrators want to recognize it or not) for each of the institutions.

Please don't become a pseudo-Harvard.

(BTW, the NU Hockey website still shows the Jan 1 and 2 games.)

The BU website also lists games this weekend. https://goterriers.com/sports/mens-ice-hockey/schedule

Have to agree with sentiments above, the communication from the program and the school over the last few years has increasingly become awful. While that's far from the most important thing going on right now, the fact that they continue to literally say nothing on the status of the season makes no sense.

No news because ... there is literally no news.

I believe two defenseman will be joining the Terriers over break. Thomas Jarman who committed recently and Union's Joseph Campolieto who has one year of eligibility left. If Campolieto does join the terriers this will be a big addition due to all other defenseman (besides Farrance) being either Fr. or So.

As a BC fan, can’t wait to see BC-BU back at it. My favorite rivalry in sports

On another note, I remember seeing last year some people on your board weren’t a big fan of Zegras and there may have been some locker room issues with him. Can anyone here refresh me on what went down?

A couple of people speculated about that on here but I don’t know it was based on any real information.

Harry is correct regarding news.

BU hasn’t played because of COVID. (Unclear weather we have fared the worst or are being the most cautious). Either way I don’t think that should be interpreted as lack of support for the program.

hockey east in today's press release cancels the BU games originally scheduled for this weekend

IMO BU has been the most cautious of all the HE programs (and perhaps in all of D1 Hockey excluding the Ivy League programs who shut down for the season) regarding its COVID protocols. BU has a very strict testing, isolation & quarantine policy for its community members if they have tested positive or are deemed a "close contact". AFAIK the positive test(s) that caused the postponement of the UMASS series were the 1st on the team; however it's unclear if additional team personnel have tested positive since.

I believe Albie allowed the players to return to their families for the holidays and that the team has since returned to campus. But due to BU's testing and quarantine protocols for students returning to campus, there was no way this weekend's games were gonna be played as scheduled. The BU Men's B-Ball games originally scheduled for this weekend vs. Holy Cross were rescheduled to a later date next week to accommodate BU's protocols.

I get the frustration over what seems to be ongoing delays, cancellations, postponements, etc. But I'd rather have BU not take any unnecessary risks with the well-being of its community members and frankly I think BU has done a tremendous job of keeping its students, faculty & staff as safe as possible on campus with its robust on-campus testing and comprehensive protocols.

He had one foot out the door the second he walked in ... he wouldn’t walk out in number order ... and he is super immature ... it’s not rumor it’s all true

Yet the Boston Hockey Blog likes to highlight his post BU exploits. Like who feels the least bit attached to this guy much like Farrabee. One year guys other than Eichel I have no interest in.

Wouldn't be surprised Union caption Josh Kosack transfers to BU. Either this year or next year as senior/post grad.

He is a high end talent as he is showing at the Worlds this year. He scared me every time he stepped on the ice. All of college hockey has suffered with the one and done syndrome. Give me the 4 year guys who develop over time and have terrific senior years like Cotton last year. I get the attraction of the $ instead of sophomore English but the roadside is littered with guys who just don't have the skills to play in the Bigs. A lot of these one year guys are going to be riding the bus to places like Wilkes Barre or Worcester like Whalstrom. That will not be the case for Zegras but lots of others who will spend five years in minors and wind up in the beer league. Wonder what these guys are doing for money this year ?

I wouldn’t go jumping the gun on zegras I would say Keller is more talented .. stronger .. faster and with much greater grit and desire to succeed and he hasn’t exactly been burning down the house .. zegras is talented but needs Strentgh desire and a little ability to know when he overdoes it
