Holy crap! That RIP-Union video is off the hook. Which reminds me, BU is also softer than a Dairy Queen cone on a 90 degree day. Is RPI any good this year, 'cause I want to join the bandwagon after watching that clip. :) Oh, and the Union coach should get 5 games for that display.

RPI hasn't been good since Adam Oates was in school.

I've re-assessed. Bennett should be suspended for the rest of the year. He took a swing and hit a player! Jesus ****ing christ. Get a grip dude. Wait a minute, perhaps this is what our heartless Terriers need. Someone order up a line brawl stat! Should we wait until the Beanpot? UMass? Lowell? Let's discuss the best team and situation. I want to see how quickly the Flying Fin skates off the ice and into the locker room.:p

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Surprised no one has mentioned the PC-BU brawl, I believe was either in 1993 or 1994? The scrum started behind the PC net and not long after, all the players on the ice had gotten into the melee. The most memorable part was when BU goalie J.P. McKersie skated at full speed from the other end of the ice to the roaring approval of a packed Walter Brown Arena to jump into the battle.

It was the final regular season game of the 1993-94 season. Yes, several BU players were suspended for the HE QF's which by a twist of fate were against Maine. The Black Bears had forfeited many games which placed them last in the standings.

Does anyone know why there was so little room in the corners and behind the nets in the Rangers - Devils game at Yankee Stadium? They had the entire field to setup the rink. Why scrimp?

One of the most satisfying quarterfinal series in my eyes. BU finished 1st, Maine finished 2nd I believe (on the ice) - might have been third but were dropped to 8th with the forfeits. Hockey East told Shawn Walsh they could not play in the tournament, but he got an injuciton from a judge that let them play. So the Black Bears come into WBA with a very good team, the Ferraro brothers back from the Olympic team, and their band, and we swept them in two games.

FWIW, a previous Flying Finn named Linna beat up a BC guy pretty easily in the waning moments of #7 BC's upset of #2 BU in '91-'92, Ceglarski's final year as BC coach. it was the only bright spot - the BC guy kept whacking away at Linna, trying to get him going. Finally Linna obliged and was the clear victor.

That's my memory, but I don't recall if he was suspended for our NCAA game against MSU as a result.

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Most of the best brawls in WBA was when somebody tried to cut in line either at the beer stand or for the men's room. ;)

Regarding BU, didn't see the second game but the coverage in the Globe said they were drained by skating without a full roster all weekend. I'm not big on excuses but I can kinda see that happening. They looked okay in the first game. Still fighting the puck like its a hand grenade but showed a little more spirit than in some of their recent contests.

That was my take on it... and you could see signs of it catching up to them in the 3rd period of the Friday night game.

Conditioning (or the lack of) has been an issue all season. They def. seem to lose their legs as the game progresses.

Collectively they're not as fast nor as strong on their skates as most previous BU teams. Size and youth notwithstanding, this results in lost 1-on-1 battles, penalties resulting from such lost battles, as well as not being able to play as fast nor physical.

Read on the blog that Noonan and Baillargeon played 30+ minutes Friday. Short turnaround to the early Saturday game didn't help...

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Personally, I think the lack of speed is the biggest issue. The game it seems they are trying to play would be better suited for a faster team.

It'd also help them cover up some of the defensive breakdowns better.

Orpik may be the toughest guy in HE history. Any other candidates? I'm surprised to read that Farkas was involved in any type of physical confrontation.
Orpik was and is big at hitting guys who dont fight. A classic "fake tough guy".

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

Not really a "brwal," but towards the end of the 2000 Beanpot final, Jeff Farkas and Pat Aufiero got into it, along with Brooks Orpik and Keith Emery. All four players were suspended for their teams next game. At the beginning of The Battle of Comm Ave, it shows Orpik really nailing Emery with a right cross.

Off the ice incident however when Mark Fidler sliced up Doug Ellis's hand at a party 1980ish.

There was a goon from PC, I a thinking Jim Korn?

Re: BU 2013-14 (Part II): Crash before the Phoenix

I recall hearing of a brawl, in the Beanpot, back in the 1970's, between BU and Harvard. It happened during warm-ups. Apparently, one guy from each team was dating the same gal.
1978 when the Beanpot final was delayed a few weeks because of the blizzard of '78. The year BU beat BC in the first round 12-5 (BU was that much better then them including another double digit win about a week later 10-5 but BC still made it to the NCAA final pretty amazing but when you have Joey Mullen all bets are off, arguably along with Kariya the best college hockey player ever around here). Anyway before the 7-1 beatdown of Harvard one of the Hughes brothers and I believe O'Callahan went at it.

About six years before Korn played at PC, they had a big forward, Rich Pumple, who'd get the elbow up on smaller guys. In a 70-71 game at the Rhode Island Auditorium, after he'd pulled that on Cahoon and Giandomenico a few times, BU's Ric Jordan lined him up and catapulted him over the boards. Jack Kelley actually cracked a smile.
