Brown @ SCSU Jan 2&3: Brown vs. Bored of Education (thank you Jase Weslosky)

Re: Brown @ SCSU Jan 2&3: Brown vs. Bored of Education (thank you Jase Weslosky)

No (athletic) scholarships for the Brown players right?

Right. But the Ivies all have huge endowments (however, they aren't quite as huge these days) and can afford to fund most, if not all, student-athletes' educations purely with financial aid in various forms. So even though there aren't any official scholarships for athletes, we can still find ways to pay for them to attend the school. The problem is finding kids who meet the rigorous academic requirements and are also talented enough to play for a D-1 school (although, apparently we are the only one with that problem- Harvard, Cornell, Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth have all found success recently, and all finished in the top 6 of the ECAC standings last year).

Also remember that SCSU has a tendency to play to the level of their opponents. They stuck with Miami when the Hawks were the #1 team in the nation, but also tied Union and lost to MTU.

Union's ranked #18, so I wouldn't really say SCSU was playing down to them in a tie.

Brown also tied Union, though, so hopefully that indicates that we will see a fairly balanced series between the teams.

the Brown players are looking forward to playing a world-class team like Saint Cloud State University.

Never fear, Lady will be there!

Pending if I get a job (which I doubt).

REALLY?!? Was gonna make sure I made the MTU series so I could see you and the hubby, but if you'll be at the Brown series, even better! We're taking my little brother and the woman's cousins to the Sunday afternoon game.

Yeah, but we're WCHA fans... so we would. :D

Except I believe it's a Saturday-Sunday series.

Good thing he doesn't have friday off.:D

You never know what Husky team is going to show up. Will we see the Husky team that blew a two goal lead in the last 6 minutes against Union or the team that out played Denver a few weeks ago? Our starting goalie and chief sieve Mike Lee will be sieving out for team USA during this series so we will have to stoop to Dan Dunn for both of these games. I don't know what the team is going to do starting a goalie with a better GAA and save percentage.:D I am sure if Dunn shuts them out both games Lee will start the next friday against MTU.........

Well UHM would advise you that Union is #1 then, now and always.:D

But you guys beat Quinnipiac. How'd you pull that off?

I don't know if anyone has commented on this yet, since I didn't read the whole thread (was too lazy).

But St. Cloud might benefit from the fact that Brown will have had almost a full month off. 5 straight wins intot he break - if this game is played on the weekend after the AIC game, then Brown might sweep the series. But having that month off always kills momentum. In all likelihood, Coach Whittet will have the troops ready to go, but you can't help but wonder if the lay-off is going to hurt.

That said, I, too, love the title of this. All in good fun and extremely politically incorrect. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Keep lookin'

I should be there for the Saturday game. I got roped into working on Friday.

Also glad to see that I'm not the only one with a gratuitous wrestling reference on a message board. (kudos to the signature)

I don't care if the first game was played 5 minutes after St. Cloud lost to CC 4-1; Brown can't get a sweep in the NHC.

So, what should we expect to see from SCSU? Well, I guess I won't be able to actually see them play myself unless it's on TV (ha!), but I'm still interested because I haven't seen them play since the 03-04 season, when they came to Providence and were throttled by the last good Brown team to date, 4-1, in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicates. :p I remember next to nothing about that game, other than the fact that the goalie let up 3 easy goals, while making several outstanding stops on chances that should have actually been goals (go figure). But obviously, he isn't enrolled in the school anymore, so that gives me absolutely no knowledge about the team whatsoever! Educate me!

SCSU is a bottom tier WCHA team. With that said, they are going to destroy Brown.

Superior game plan, superior technique, dominating possession- Brown came to play a #4 team in the country, and QU came to play Brown.

Unfortunately for opposing teams, you can't come to play Brown and win anymore. I have a feeling we are going to surprise a few people with the quality of our play in this series, whether or not we get any results.

Back to the Quinnipiac game:
It wasn't that Quinnipiac failed to execute their game plan; it was that Brown didn't allow them to do so, and picked away at them by holding possession until they got frustrated and starting taking stupid penalties (and there were a plethora of others that went uncalled). This is how we've been playing recently, and it's been very effective. Quite contrary to the past 12 years under Coach Grillo, this team values possession, and actually knows what to do with the puck once it gets it. They cycle beautifully and forecheck ferociously, and as a result of this style, the defense gets worn out and guys are allowed to get open for easy shots.

I'm not going to make any bold predictions, but I would advise SCSU not to take Brown lightly. This is a different team than last year; heck, it's even a different team from a few weeks ago, when it started out 0-7-1.

First off, nice win for you guys, but I think I speak for everyone out West when I say, Quinnipiac at #4 is about as good a shot as one'll ever get to beat a top 5 team.

Oh, and don't worry... I suspect at least one night, if not both, St. Cloud will take Brown lightly.

Any Brown fans making the trek to the NHC?
