Brown Hockey 2019-2020: Hibernation is Over

Re: Brown Hockey 2019-2020: Hibernation is Over

Nesterenko de-commits: https://twitter.com/MarkDivver/status/1181540363602931712?s=20

Too bad. This seems to happen periodically: The staff identifies a talent before the blue bloods, gets a commitment from him early, and then after he has a breakout at a showcase event, some of the bigger programs get in his ear and promise an easier path to the NHL, and we lose him.

Dang! I was looking forward to seeing him play. Kid has sick, sick hands. BTW, Lafferty was called up to Pens last night.

One of the responses pointed out that this is the time of year "commits" see their stock skyrocket after performing well in front of a bunch of scouts, so de-commits are normal. Still disappointing to see Brown lose two in quick succession, though. Now Whittet et al will need to scramble to find a back-up plan.

OOF. That one hurts. It's one thing to lose recruits due to academic ineligibility or a blue blood poaching them; it's another to lose them to one of your biggest rivals and closest (geographically) Ivy competitors.

Re: Brown Hockey 2019-2020: Hibernation is Over

Sam Lafferty was called up to Pittsburgh recently, and has a 3-2-5 line in 4 NHL games! He scored 2 last night in the Pens' 7-2 shellacking of Winnipeg, and had a goal and 2 assists in the previous game against Minnesota. First time I've ever rooted for anyone on the Pens, I think. :p

Hey everyone, it's time once again for the ECAC Pick the Standings Contest! It takes about 2 minutes of your time for a whole season of fun and a chance at eternal glory!

(forgive the blatant copy-pasting to every ECAC-related thread)

Had read Cornell was in the running for Nesterenko but at least you didn’t lose him to another Ivy. He chose BC.

Bodes fairly well for this coming weekend, although it's hard to assign much significance to these scrimmages.

Re: Brown Hockey 2019-2020: Hibernation is Over

Nice season preview with Coach and his captains: https://www.facebook.com/BrownMensHockey/videos/406578903623956/

At the end, he makes his case for people to come out and see the team at Meehan. When Brown was coming off an ECAC title game run and then had a great stretch of play in the 2013-14 season, Meehan sold out against BC and Yale. If the team wins games, the people will come! Avoiding a slow start, like last year, will be key to building fan interest.

Re: Brown Hockey 2019-2020: Hibernation is Over

I don't fret as much about decommits as some of you. In most cases decommitting is the right move for both the student athlete and Brown. Very often it's the result of parents' overinflated view of their sons' ability. Sometimes it has to do with borderline unethical behavior of their so-called "advisers."

For students who may not be interested in going to class, the Ivy League is definitely not the best option.

Agree in general with this sentiment, but losing a recruit to Yale is a bummer (Phil Kemp, Bayard Hall).

Re: Brown Hockey 2019-2020: Hibernation is Over

A fine start to the season, splitting with Yale, but the headline for me is the power play. Night-and-day from the previous few years. Not only were they fun to watch; they were lethal. If that can remain a strength this year, this team can win a whole bunch of games.

See my comment above about parents' overinflated opinion of their sons' ability.

Re: Brown Hockey 2019-2020: Hibernation is Over

Cornell-Colgate is always a tough trip for Brown, but if we can score some goals we can pick off Colgate, who struggles offensively. Intrigued to see how the power play performs. It won't be a surprise to anyone – it was even mentioned in two separate USCHO columns. I assume both opponents will have scouted it extensively; we'll see if Brown has the answer.

Nieto looked really solid last weekend, and despite ceding a lot of possession to Yale on Friday, I didn't think the defense was particularly worrisome, either. Hoping Justin Jallen isn't injured – he limped off toward the end of Saturday's game, but was electrifying all weekend.
