Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

The last three national champions are Yale, Union, and Providence. There is no reason academically, geographically or otherwise that we can't compete with these teams. I'm expecting better things in 2015-16!

Euler/Bruno - Any insights into how Brown was selected?

What do you guys think? I've heard this will be a league game as well. Have no idea how these teams were selected. Not sure if we're stupid or crazy or both to do this in the middle of the season. Colgate has Clarkson and SLU the following weekend; the turnaround will be very tough and could be costly.

First of all, congratulations to the Providence College Friars, to coach Nate Leaman, and to athletic director Bob Driscoll.

Like Jim Laughlin (AD at Union) Bob Driscoll understood that it was possible for a relatively small school with a small endowment to win a national championship in hockey. Together with the administration of their colleges, they made a concerted effort to support hockey at the highest level. The result has been two national titles. Contrast that with the modus operandi in the Brown Athletic Department, with its obsession to raise revenue in a vain attempt to spread limited resources among thirty-eight teams. (Does Brown really need a wrestling team and two fencing teams?) No wonder Brown has won 15 Ivy championships over the last ten years while Princeton has won 105, and every other Ivy school (including Columbia) has won more titles than Brown.

Simply put, Jim Laughlin and Bob Driscoll (not to mention Union President Stephen Ainly and Providence College President Father Brian Shanley) get it.

A LESSON TO BE LEARNED

"Our president [the Rev Brian Shanley] and our athletic director [Bob Driscoll], you've got to have support by these people if you're going to be successful. And we're fortunate enough to have support like that." Providence College Coach Nate Leaman

Brown hockey continues:

Finished my taxes and walked over to the TU for the Devils game. Worth the trip - Matt had a goal and 4 assists. He simply amazes me with his vision on the ice.

Good post-game interview with him and video of his points with this link

BTW, you can just about make me out behind the Devils goal in 1st and 3rd periods.

How do we get Pres Paxton and AD Hayes to support Brown hockey?

Brown09 has good sources...

This list of four incoming defensemen will be complemented by three forwards: Alex Brink (Junior Bruins), Tim Doherty (Jr. Bruins) and Tommy Marchin (Muskegon, USHL).

Solid class. More about it when the new Brown discussion list is set up.

Is there still a search for a goalie for next year or is Brown committed to Steel Ernst and Mahar?

This is pure speculation, but I would imagine they're just going to ride out the year with those three as they await the arrival of the highly-touted Elijah Harris in 2016-17. With the defensemen coming in, I'm assuming whoever starts will have a much less tumultuous season! Lots of goals given up on rebounds and odd man rushes this year.

From an email I received from Brown's baseball coach:

Second, I’m sure you have read, we are in the midst of a major transformation of the entire Athletics program. Athletics is now viewed as a priority at the University and President Christina Paxson has approved four new athletic facilities as top priorities — including a new baseball stadium. Coach Achilles and the Sports Foundation are working diligently on plans to make it happen. A new baseball facility, coupled with the recent momentum of the program, would catapult Brown Baseball to the next level. More to follow on this topic in the near future.

Euler, do you have any info you can share about this commitment and how Men's/Women's Hockey fits in?

Are they going to use the new PawSox stadium?

Brown currently has an 8-million-dollar deficit that needs to be reduced to zero over the next four years. The university is planning cuts to employees' benefits (such as in health coverage) and has issued a moratorium on the temporary replacement of faculty who are on research leaves, which means that some courses may not be taught. The fee for employees' use of Brown athletic facilities is quietly in the process of being raised. Etc. The conditions appear far from ideal for Brown to embark on the construction of new athletic facilities. Nevertheless, administrative decisions are often made in mysterious ways.

One lesson that I learned when I chaired the search committee for the new athletic director in 2005 was that Brown didn't -- and still doesn't -- have the financial resources to field thirty-eight varsity teams. We've been doing it with smoke and mirrors -- and the commitment of some very dedicated coaches and student athletes. This situation has gone on for too long and can't go on forever. Someone has to have the courage to make some unpopular decisions.

As promised by Euler...defensemen!

If anyone has insights about these players, I (and I'm sure others) would love to hear them. It sounds like at least a few of these guys can come in and contribute right away, but the article is obviously written by the athletic department, so it isn't as critical as an outside source might be.

Any improvements on the defensive end would be MOST welcome, especially if there is a solid puck-mover who can help transition from defense to attack. That was an aspect last year's team sorely missed following Dennis Robertson's departure. And we can always use more offensive threats and balance throughout the lineup, though I do expect some of the now-sophomores to have greatly improved seasons and to contribute consistently.

As it stands now, our returning lineup would appear to be:

N. Lappin-Naclerio-???
Bird-Lafferty-Willman
Pryzbek-????-T.Lappin
???-Middleton-???

Pfeil-Wood
McArdle-Cooper
Tegtmeyer-???

Steel

I would expect Kramer, Corcoran, Doane, and Prescott to fight for spots in the lineup, but there will undoubtedly be some freshmen in the mix. The biggest question is probably who replaces Matt Lorito.

I wouldn't be so sure about the above lineup... There are issues to be resolved...

I think the 2015-2016 team will be much improved at defense and should be able to score more goals with the growing maturity of Lafferty, Bird and Willman, and the addition of Brink, Marchin and Doherty. If the goaltending holds, the Bears could surprise.
