Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Union has proved that in order to win a national championship it's not necessary to have a state-of-the-art rink or a loud student section at home games. Just solid recruiting, excellent coaching, and, most of all, total commitment to the program by smart, effective athletic administrators.

Of note, Union's AD is Jim McLaughlin who several years ago was the Associate AD at Brown. I am not sure but I believe it was in Roach's tenure.

Jim McLaughlin was an Assistant Athletic director at Brown under David Roach. Joan Taylor was the Associate Director.

Jim is a classy individual and extremely knowledgeable about the field of college athletics. He correctly understood the potential of Union hockey at the national level, and provided the support that created the conditions leading up to the Dutchmen's national title. I'm very happy for him right now.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Mark's observation about Union's depth proved true. 4 producing lines. Hopefully, Bruno with next year's entering class can get close to that kind of depth.

I'd be good with one consistently producing line. :p

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Yeah, but a rowdy crowd and a modern rink makes it a little more fun. :)

I agree with both Brown09 and kdiff77.

But I'd be happy enough with just the factors listed by Brown09: Great recruiting, coaching and administrative commitment/support.

Ryan Garbutt scored for Dallas tonight in the NHL playoffs. The Stars lost to Anaheim, but it's nice to see a Brown guy playing this late in the season. Dallas gave him a multiyear contract extension earlier his season based on his terrific play on their very effective fourth line.

Yes, Jim was an Associate Director. There is more than one of each.

I stand corrected, and didn't mean to belittle Jim or downgrade his position! :-)

Lots of different titles in the Athletics Department... Right now, in addition to the Director of Athletics, there is 1 Executive Associate Director of Athletics, 2 Senior Associate Directors of Athletics, 1 Associate Director of Athletics, and 2 Assistant Directors of Athletics. I apologize in advance for mixing up the titles in present, future or past posts.

In order to keep up. on April 1 I became Executive Senior Faculty Advisor to the Men's Hockey Team. :-)

Garbutt scores another goal for Dallas, and it looks like the Stars will win this one, as they lead the Ducks 3-0 in the third period at home.

The commentators have been RAVING about Garbutt and his line all night. He really has become one of Dallas' most important players.

Ryan has 5 shots on goal so far. Not bad for a fourth liner.

With input from Bruno, and some good news to report, here's the start of the 2014-2015 Brown Hockey thread:

From Mark Divver

Word is that big KUA winger and prospective NHL pick Tyler Bird will go straight to Brown this fall instead of playing year of juniors.

As we wrote in Red Line Report last month- that's the smart play! Get Bird & Willman together now @daredlinereport.

Mark Divver ‏@MarkDivver Mar 31
Arrival of Bird and Williston F Max Willman, also likely NHL pick, should give Brown Men's Hockey a shot in the arm up front next season.

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Just saw that our full schedule has been released.

http://www.brownbears.com/sports/m-hockey/2014-15/schedule

I have to say, I'm a little underwhelmed/disappointed with the Army and Holy Cross games. Would have liked to have seen another HE school or two, or maybe a couple games out west against a B1G, WCHA, or NCHC team. And we don't even get to host these two AHA teams!

Ah well. The home-and-home with Providence should be fun, and that Dartmouth tournament sounds great. UConn was a decent team last year, so that should be a good test.

Anyone else find it weird we open with Harvard on a Sunday?

Also, it seems to me that the students come out in force ONLY for Yale/Dartmouth/Harvard/Cornell, in that order, and only if the game is played at certain times during second semester (usually mid-February; they're all back on campus after winter break and no one has to worry about midterms yet). It's too bad we only have one home game against one of those teams in that span (Dartmouth on February 6). Maybe they'll make a big fuss about the opening Harvard game- free tshirts or something.

And hey- maybe the team will actually be good, and we'll gain a sustained following! :)

Hmmm...maybe it was prematurely posted, and then someone was instructed to take it down.

But if it was correct, here is some of what I remember: we'll open with Harvard and then SLU/Clarkson, both at home. The Providence weekend is the first in January, followed by the Yale weekend. Senior Night is against Colgate on the last weekend of the season.
