Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

Re: Brown Hockey 2014-2015 - Onward and Upward

"RPI's mastery of Brown in the regular season has been rivaled only by their shortcomings against them in the playoffs. In the last 10 seasons, Brown has beaten RPI in more playoff games - six - than they've managed ECAC points against the Engineers - five."

Wow. That is truly astonishing. We all know how bad Brown has been against RPI from November-February each season, but to put it in perspective like this is VERY eye-opening.

Good read! Thanks for posting, Ralph.

(Also, the writer missed another key recruit who de-committed: Blake Weyrick).

I suspect that the writer is reading these comments.

I like this part of the article:

Brown assistant Mike Devine, a former head coach at Kimball Union Academy, has been hitting the road hard and continuing the strong recruiting momentum the Bears staff has maintained in recent years. Head coach Brendan Whittet is a very good recruiter and has a keen eye for procuring high-end talent.

Even though Mike is a "divine" recruiter, the article misspelled his name: it's LEVINE. :-)

The Brown Bears have been going through daily workouts and captains' practice sessions in anticipation of the beginning of formal practices in mid-October.

Though the 2014-2015 Bears will be young, there'll be intense competition for playing time among the eight defensemen, seventeen forwards and three goalies. Brendan Whittet's philosophy has always been to give everybody a chance to prove himself. Brendan will play the best players regardless of age or year.

Some of the first-year players have started to impress, particularly Charlie Corcoran and Sam Lafferty at forward, and the three skilled young defenders, who are expected to push some of the veterans for regular spots.

The team has great leadership with senior Matt Lorito and junior Marc Naclerio. The attitude around the Brown locker room couldn't be more posiive.

I believe that this season we'll see the Bears on their way towards the top echelons of the league. Of course, their immediate success will depend on solid goaltending and on the quickness with which the young players will adjust to the college game. However, the foundations of a future championship team have been laid out. This should be a great transitional season -- or better if the stars align properly.

Will Brown keep all 28 on the roster or do you expect a cut or two?

From Over The Boards' Twitter account:

@OTBPuckWatch: 96 D Will Scherer (Topeka Roadrunners) commits to Brown. Bears swoop in on one of the NAHL's top highly mobile puck-movers. Likely 15 or 16.

Another big-time pickup for Whittet. This program could be a sustained national power in a few years if he and his staff keep this up (knock on wood).

I'm so, so excited to watch this program (and hopefully, a fanbase) grow. The nation's oldest hockey program has been irrelevant for FAR too long.

At the local YMCA rink there is a poster announcing a game this Sunday between SUNY Albany and Brown in a club team match-up. I didn't realize Brown had a club team. Some info on the brown athletics website and a google search shows some former Brown varsity players on past teams, including Joe Mello and Riley LaForge. Has anyone seen the team play? At least I can get my Brown hockey fix.

Brown has had a club team for about twelve years. It consists primarily of intramural-level skaters and an occasional player who didn't make or quit the varsity (the latter having been more common under Roger Grillo). From what I've seen (e.g., a game between Penn State and Framingham State at the Salem State Holiday tournament as Penn State was beginning to make the move from club to varsity), Division I club is a level or two below college Division III. (Framingham State is far from a Division III powerhouse and played Penn State, a Division I club team at the time, evenly.) Brown, however, plays at the Division III club level.

Joe Mello accepted the role as a practice goalie with the varsity when Brendan suddenly found himself with only two goalies in the aftermath of the Roy boys' reneging on their commitment to Brown. Joe actually played a few minutes of the Brown vs. Providence College game in the fall of 2012, after the scoring got out of hand (I think the final score was 7-0 for PC), and gave a solid account of himself. I never got to know him very well, but he appeared to be well-liked by the team. On the other hand, I knew Riley well. Great kid, from Edmonton Alberta, who was injured before he came to Brown, and unfortunately didn't make it as a varsity defenseman. He was in the same freshman class as Jack McLellan.

Thanks for Posting this MH. I just assumed it was a UAlbany practice. BTW, for whatever reason, they took the poster down that you referred....at least it was yesterday.

Look forward to seeing you at the Bethlehem Y on Sunday. I will be with my grandkids who will be wearing brown hockey sweaters.
