Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Mao, Pol Pot, and Stalin were pretty bad, too. Though I'd call Stalin a reactionary strong man and hence he has some conservative street cred. He certainly was just adopting the tool to hand and the tool happened to be a regime founded on left wing principles. Lenin was a lefty. Stalin was just a psycho.

I was confining the list to people in the here and now but point taken.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

Except the EU doesnt have to accept her declaration...and most likely wont.

The European Court of Justice has already ruled that at any point prior to 29 March the UK can unilaterally rescind Article 50.

Do we count Maduro as left? He seems to be well out of his depth in his role, even though he was supposedly an excellent administration guy lower down. (Chávez OTOH was quite competent as he managed to stick his middle finger in the big dumb eye of The New World Order without getting Dole Pineappled).

Was the EU just keeping the pressure on the UK by saying they would not rescind?

It sure seems like it would be a seriously expensive point to make on general principles. Could they simply say, "just like Dumpy this was the work of the Russians conning our stupids, so we're rolling it back"?

At some point we're just going to have to disenfranchise the stupids. Slap a barely minimal (say, 1200) SAT requirement on the right to vote. Democracy doesn't mean being pulled over the cliff by the mental and moral deadweight.

I think the problem for the EU is any country looking for their own side deal would threaten to leave and then rescind at the last minute if nobody called their bluff.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

We're supposed to go to Scotland next month to celebrate my mom's 75th birthday at my grandfather's ancestral home. We are flying into Heathrow and then to Glasgow. My mom found this news on the BBC website and now she doesn't want to go. Thanks Brexiteers.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

My daughter is currently in line for a teaching spot in Poland. The company is based in the UK. The whole thing is a basket case right now and they may be well and truly f-cked.

There's two different issues. The UK can unilaterally *rescind* Article 50, they cannot unilaterally *extend* the declaration. An extension (which the UK will probably seek before week's end) has to be agreed to by all 27 members of the EU. The UK better come up with a good reason to ask for an extension other than just kicking the can down the road. It is interesting that May said yesterday after the vote that it would be up to Parliament to explain why the UK needs the extension. In all of her previous messages it was "I, I, I" now it's "You, you, you."

E-Residency in Estonia might be an option for her and the business owners.

TLDR News just did a story about it.

I'm not sure about the logic behind that. Why cancel?

She's afraid that there will be an attack or a bomb or something while we're at Heathrow, or at the airport in Glasgow, or something else. The odds of something like that happening are infinitesimal but try telling her that. I went to Rome, Naples and Athens when I was in high school shortly after terrorist attacks had rocked all three cities. When we landed in Rome there were tanks on the runway and soldiers with Uzis and German Shepherds in muzzles were patrolling the airport. I was fine. We're not canceling (yet) but if the situation gets worse we probably will.

Ah gotcha. I missed that jump. For some stupid reason, I had assumed you were referring to the passport and customs process. :o Sorry about that.

I hope you still go. Like you said, the odds of something happening even in a heightened state of unrest are still extremely low. When I was traveling to Europe last year, I had to try to calm my mom's fears about terrorist attacks and me being caught up in one. I know it's not the same situation, but I can sort of relate. It sucks. I remember back in high school when I was over in either Budapest or Prague, there was one building, which I seem to remember being a concert hall or opera house, that was being guarded by APCs and heavily armed troops. I can still picture the street corner. I probably should have been more scared, but I don't recall being particularly upset by it. Chalk that up to being a stupid teenager I guess.

Anyways, I really hope you get to go.

If anything it's probably safer. You know what day not to attempt your terrorist attack in DC? The day when big protests are in town, because then each one of our 5 different levels of law enforcement is bulked up.

Re: Brexit - Should I stay or should I go??

That's a weird vote. It's like while you're falling you vote to not hit the ground.

Are they just trying to rig a democratic fig leaf before they blow off the referendum and tell the people they're too dumb to have self-determination? Like putting a 5150 on an entire country?

That's a growing possibility. Although they won't say the people are too stupid (telling your voters they're morons isn't the best election strategy, although it worked for Sniffles) they'll say the referendum was non-binding. Then May rescinds Article 50 and retires to whatever paradise she chooses while the rest of Parliament are left to pick up the pieces.
