BouncyBall 2013/2014

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

UCONN beats Notre Dame for the Women's title, 63-53. At least Notre Dame gave them a fight.

It always amazes me how many people on the comment boards on ESPN will then denigrate women's basketball, in various versions of "who cares anyway?" If you really don't care, why post at all?

it seems to me that the state of the women's college game today is about where the men's game was in the 1970s. At that time, there weren't that many skilled men's players (compared to today), and a few teams could consistently recruit the best players (UCLA and John Wooden, for example).

I've never figured that out either. I don't really care about the NBA until the semi-finals, so I'm not going to go click on an article about D-Rose just so I can say "I DONT CARE NBA IS BORING" in the comments.

For UConn, I find their dynasty pretty incredible. It's definitely easier being in a relatively new sport where you can build a name and keep it by just saying "I'm from UConn, come play for me", but to continually build a championship team is impressive. They've outlasted the reign of at least three major women's teams (ODU, LaTech, Tenn) and have maintained the crown as top program despite runs by Stanford, ND, Baylor, and SoCar.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

Seven Kentucky players announce they're going pro.

Before today, five were already projected for the draft. Four in the first round.

This could possibly be one of the biggest coaching failures of all time. At least two, if not three, lottery picks, plus possibly four other players being drafted. That's half an NBA roster, and they still couldn't win it all.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

Derek Fisher, coach of the Knicks, says "they can win 63 games next year if they want to."

Is this after they're done going 0-fer for Okafor?

Very interesting perspective from Coach Auriemma in the post-game press conference: basically, he is saying that in the historical arc of basketball, where the women's game is today is very similar to where the men's game was in the 1970s: the relative lack of depth of the available talent pool (basketball back then was nowhere near as popular in high school or college as it is now), the ability of one team to dominate (see UCLA, 10 titles in 12 years), etc. He said that as the women's game increases in popularity, more talent will become more broadly available both among players and also among coaches (see the development of Dawn Staley, mentored by Auriemma on the National team staff), then no one team will be able to dominate. Meanwhile, it's fun for him while it lasts.

I was only able to watch the second half of the championship game last night. I was amazed at how hard UConn had to work. It was one of the most consistent displays of mental toughness and "grit" that I've seen in awhile. It must be incredibly difficult to keep winning as a favorite, everyone else gives you their very best shot, every time.

I kind of feel sorry for Notre Dame, the Buffalo Bills of women's college basketball: four championship appearances in five years (including victories over UConn in the semi-finals in 2011 and 2012, no less), yet 0 - 4 in those games.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

The updated 0-fer for Okafor sweepstakes:

Knicks: 15-63
Timberwolves: 16-62
Sixers: 18-61
LA Lakers: 20-58

Gut feeling says either the Knicks or Lakers get the first pick.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

The Knicks and Magic combined for a grand total of 15 points in the second quarter of their game tonight.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

NBA's Race for the Basement, or the 0-fer for Okafor:

Timberwolves 16-66
Knicks 17-65
Sixers 18-64
Lakers 21-61

.

I think I saw that segment. He basically says there are more good teams, but less great teams, which makes sense. UConn is the only great team left so of course they're dominating everyone.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

There is a bouncyball game here tonight and everyone is quite excited. I am waiting for the Bucks to come back to Earth, but you never know.

Know how bad the Knicks were this year? And the Sixers last year, losing 26 in a row?

The Bucks were worse last year.

The Timberwolves' Andrew Wiggins is the Rookie of the Year.

I'll be, something went right for the T-puppies this year.

Re: BouncyBall 2013/2014

At one point during the game, I actually thought "it would be nice if they could lose by less than 50" :)
