Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

I think the first period was about what you expect from BC-Merrimack. Second period was terrific. For large portions of the 3rd they were also terrific. Seney really is a good player for Merrimack. This game with some luck could have been a blowout given the huge difference in zone time, shots (not just on goal), and faceoffs. It was a shooting gallery for large stretches in favor of BC. Here and there Merrimack would respond for a little bit and made it an interesting game.

The penalty to Smith was hilariously bad - I really have no idea how he got the extra penalty against BU last week in the scrum when Roberto threw his hissy fit and this kid caught another bad break by essentially standing there doing nothing while trying to dig out a puck on the wall. Santini's penalty I am ok with but there was serious embellishment to sell the call. Whatever don't care that much about it - it was an awful shift and start to the 3rd period.

The first goal was a great result of a lot of little things that were done right, including the body positioning of Tuch to shield the puck, the pass up to the point, and the shoulder fake by Hanifin across the blue line which had everyone cheating and created his shooting lane. The second goal was simply a great play by Savage and an impressive job by Calnan to get that goal from in tight with what was a difficult pass to received and turn into a scoring chance.

Demko stood tall when he had to especially late on a flurry on the right post and his poke check may have saved the game as well. Not to mention the penalty shot save.

Hanifin made some bad decisions including a bad turnover right at the 5 min mark of the first. He really does try to do too much sometimes (Hoky is right). Got burned by the big Merrimack kid down the right wing on their only goal.

Matheson - not sure what to say. Absolutely maddening that BC was in control of the game and he even attempted a pass that was totally unnecessary on the powerplay. A flubbed pass is one thing but that is more of a bad decision that will drive the coaches crazy. There are a lot of things you can do there, you can just bang it right back into the zone if you're in real trouble even though it would be a turnover at least you can change lines and regroup after they clear it down. You can pin it to the wall if a guy is coming at you (no one was) and wait for help. You can skate it backward and buy yourself time if you need to. BC was very fortunate there to have those sequences of events go their way. Very very fortunate. I'm not sure how the team would have responded if that went to a 1-1 game.

Not feeling good about this Saturday tilt - Yukon is tough and blocks a lot of shots and has great goaltending. Need to fire up the powerplay big time and stay out of the box if they want to win it. Could be a similar game to this one. Hopefully this snowstorm rolls in and keeps the mongoloids from CT in their state.

Watching the Bruins-Avs now it is crazy to see such a pronounced difference when you watch these two games back to back.

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

i liked the way we played tonight, i thought it was one of the better games this year. We just dont have the guy that can consistently put the puck in the net. Lot of shots right at Tirronen but he's really good. Felt bad for Cango, he needed that one and had anther great look but was stoned . I thought he played well though and was flying all over the place. Fitz was good too. Smh at Matheson's gaffe, Jesus. Crowd was not bad for a wednesday night at 4188 but i was surprised at that number, they must have been all on the home side. On to Yukon to try to split the season series with them:eek:

Hopefully Woods can provide more offense next year and they also have Brown and Dudek. Why Heisenberg keeps Milano on the list is beyond me. He was long gone from last summer.

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

Thought the first 2 periods were very good, held Merrimack to 13 shots. Those last 8 minutes or so were bad and I had nightmares of them getting a late goal and only escaping with 1 point.

Haven't seen Tuch play that angry all year.

The powerplay has looked much better in the new year.

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

i realize there are advanced metrics out there (not sure about the college game), but matheson is a team worst -6. not the be all end all but to me still an indication of what i see with my eyes when i watch him play. i don't think someone like doherty being +16 is just a coincidence. just my opinion.

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

so apparently there are mostly only singles available for saturday night.

also as a heads up yukon is having their alum pregame at cityside apparently

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

not sure what the latest is, but at last check i think we're supposed to get hit with a decent snow storm

i have to be honest, I'm stunned. If there are a lot of Yukon fans there, the dynamic has changed. The storm will have passed and the area down there will not get much anyway so hopefully the ticket holders show up. If you havent checked some of the crowds totals in Hartford when they play there you (plural) should

How about that. We move into #15 PWR sitting idle.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth Eagles. Take care of business against UConn!

seems like there is essentially no difference from #6 thru #20. Top 5 maybe starting to separate??

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

That's about as frustrating a period as it gets. Control play and just can't score (well besides the goal)

yeah, I couldnt make it but FiveHole12 was pretty furious. 15-6 i think in SOG for those UNH fans keeping tract. Did the expected big crowd materialize?

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

Ya pretty good crowd. Plenty of students but not as lively

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

Comical how this game is tied but better than being down a goal

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

No question what team deserved the 2 points...good job not getting frustrated

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

Thoughts...
That was a great hockey game. Had a post season type intensity to it, on the ice, not so much the atmosphere.

I guessed 7000 in attendance. I see there were 6800.

BC could have scored 4 in the first if not for the UConn goalie (Nichols) standing on his head. He was something else and I was fearing he might steal 2 points. How the heck did he not get one of the stars of the game?

Cav has his team playing a BC style game. They brought 2 aggressive forecheckers against us all night long. Was nice to see our guys handle the pressure almost flawlessly.

BC controlled play for long stretches at a time but UConn never quit. Neither did the Eagles, despite the frustration of being stoned on so many grade A chances. But they just kept bringing it all night long. That was a great effort and a well deserved win for the Eagles.

Welcome back Fitzy. To steal a phrase from the pinheads, he skated all night long like his hair was on fire. :)

We leap frog Lowell and VT to #13 PWR. Sweet. Just keep winning baby.

Played very well for long stretched in this game but I think we all know by now that most the games down the stretch are gonna be just like the wins against BU, Merrimack and UConn. Just an all out dog fight each and every night.

I almost lost it when they reviewed a potential UConn goal after not blowing the whistle for an eternity compared to the horrendous quick whistle that cost BC a goal.

Aside from the PWR, if you look at the Hockey East standings now, they have put themselves in a realistic position to grab one of those first round byes. Beating Providence will be an extremely tall task for this team, but played them tough down at Schneider. Certainly not "expecting" a win, but we'll see what happens.

Re: Boston College Season 2014 - 2015 Thread: PART I

Fun game tonight and a big crowd. Cav's already got UConn playing great hockey. Imagine when he starts getting more of his own recruits in there? They are going to be a tough out year in and year out.

They are on the right side of the PWR bubble for now,. Things are going to fluctuate like crazy -- the gap is so small between almost all of these teams. Look at Lowell now suddenly below BC and down on the bubble. Vermont too. And Providence goes from early struggles to suddenly surging up into the top 10.

On BCI yesterday Grant wrote that if BC goes 7-3-0 in the last 10 they should be on the right side of the bubble going in to conference tournaments (which will obviously stir the pot up some more). One win down. They're all gonna be cage fights, as referenced above.

Let's talk about how bonkers the Hockey East tournament is going to be. The OctoFinals will have a few dog matchups since UNH and UMass will be in there and those teams look bad right now. But beyond that... how many easy outs will there be? You're looking at a Merrimack or a UConn or even a Notre Dame in 8/9 land traveling to the 1-seed, probably BU? That's likely to be a competitive series. If BC ends up 2 or 3 you're probably looking at a Northeastern or even a Vermont or (gah) Notre Dame coming to Conte for the QFs. Going to be some great hockey, if bad for the nerves.
