Boston College Hockey 2026 - 2027

generally agree with eyak, with one caveat... definitely have some concerns on the injury bug, especially on defense. losing 1 defenseman per game is not a great trend, with Joyce, Beauchesne, and now Mallgrave leaving each respective game hurt. hopefully they aren't long term (and it doesn't keep happening, or else they might have to ask a forward to play defense).

in general though it's just a very young team getting used to the college game. not everyone can slide in as quickly as Vanhanen or Woodall. might be a tough watch for now but not worth writing off

not sure if anyone mentioned yet but the Moore injury is him aggravating the shoulder injury he dealt with over summer. speculation is season ending :/
The problem is that under the selection system used by the NCAA, getting off to a slow start when you play the majority of your nonconference games buries you in a hole that is extremely had to dig out of. There isn't time to play your way out of it, by the time that you do you're already in crisis mode.

Fair point, and it's why the Alaska loss stings most. BC is 1-2, and all three games were at home against nonconference teams. The St. Cloud split is fine, since SCSU is a tournament-caliber team, but dropping the opener at home to Alaska is the kind of result that sits in the comparisons all year. The good news is there's still a lot of nonconference schedule left to fix it, if the D can get healthy.

Not sure what is left to say. You've all been warned for a good while now about Greg Brown. Against all evidence, some folks still feel the urge to hang on for the sake of being idiotically contrarian. That's on you if that's your choice.

Any discussion at this point should be the status of Greg Brown's contract, how soon we can get out of it, and the short list of coaches that should be considered to replace him.

As Cross Check has referenced above, there is a thing called NPI and Boston College isn't going to finish in the top 15 of that under any circumstances with 2 home losses to currently 1-5 Alaska and 2-3 SCSU. Hockey East looks strange this year via early results so of course it's possible to get in via the autobid but this season currently as of October 19th, 2026 is Beanpot-or-Bust mode.

Anyone notice BC went to a neutral zone trap down 4-1 to start the 3rd period on Saturday? LOL. Let's see what happens in Denver. Greg Brown is historically excellent vs Carle.

If you go upstairs to Pikes, no one has the nerve to speak ill of the program or make any objective comments or criticism of the team and coaching. When the team is not playing well or not playing up to its potential if you believe in the talent they recruit, no one comes down hard on them and just goes along with the flow. The same old people say the same things and usually it's all happy talk.

How can you allow your team to come out flat Saturday and not even get any amount shots on net until the end of the period ? Typical BC MO. Why does this team only play in spurts like the first 10 minutes or last 5 minutes ? GB is another Ceglaski who had talented teams but wins very few trophies when it counts or you can even say GB is worse than LC.

No, I'm not prepared to say he's worse than Ceglarski, at least not yet. They each have one NCAA Finals appearance, Brown's in many fewer seasons. Plus Ceglarski was the coach of the 1986-87 squad's most disappointing and disgusting first round exit in BC history. That team was so talented it was sinful. I'm not lost on the irony that Greg Brown was a player on that team. That was one of multiple BC teams in Ceglarski's tenure that I am utterly convinced would have won the NCAA title with Jerry York coaching. Ceglarski was Dick Umile in maroon and gold. Not quite willing to there yet with Brown, though there is certainly reason for unrest.

Can't listen anymore 4-2 DU after BC tied it 2-2 after being down 2-0. Brown has no control in game management, the stupid penatlies, lack of urgency at times, etc. Bring Cav back to BC.
No SOG for 10 minutes with only 9 minnutes. Folks game is over thanks to Brownie game management. I have no vote of confidence.

Well, I spent money watching Greg Brown lose so you didn't have to.

Kept notes as the game went along.

First period:
- Pelletier another penalty. This is becoming a pattern.
- Vanhannen and Hemming again look great. VH should have had 2 goals in the first.
- Conmy rang the bar
- BC had most of the good chances
- Both goalies leaving lots of rebounds
- Dean bad decision to try to go thru everyone in the neutral zone, coughed it up on the DU Goal. The DU player made a play no BC player is capable of to snipe it using the BC defenseman as a screen.
- BC 4 of 12 on faceoffs. JFC

Second Period:
- Great start, they came out flying, Mutryn stuffed on break-in. BC defense goes to sleep and DU scores on the counter-attack seconds later. Might have been a bad line change? IDK. Terrible.
- Losing faceoffs --> less possession -> more penalties on BC, not enough PPs
- Cloutier is a rebound machine
- VH wide open after penalty was killed, hit goalie in center of the chest on feed from Dean behind the net
- Now Stiga also hits the DU goalie in chest
- This team would struggle to put pucks past a shooter tutor.
- Thoroughly outplaying DU, tied in two shifts.
- Not a great Stiga call kills momentum on an incidental neutral zone collision with BC puck possession, DU player falls down so... BC penalty.
- Sondreal SH breakaway stopped
- Here we go again, two guys fall over each other at buzzer with no sticks involved, completely bogus cross-checking call on Dean. Lol he fell down and they gave him a cross-checking penalty.
- 14 of 35 on faceoffs after 2.

Third period:
- DU scores right off the bat on the PP. Screwed by bad call. That being said, Cloutier never even tried to locate the puck with a DU player screening him in front. He just went down with his face blocked. Rudolph sniped from the point. Can we get guys that can hit the corners like this?
- Another penalty coming, DU delayed penalty goal. That's the ballgame.
- And a stupid Resendes penalty that we need to suffer through every game.
- 0 SOG thru 10 mins
- Final faceoff numbers: 22 of 52. 42%.

Final thoughts:
- IDK how good this DU team really is. But it's Carle so you know they will find a way to win and do the little things necessary.
- Greg Brown still sucks and Carle is his daddy.
- BC honestly outplayed DU thru 2 periods and had the lion's share of the Grade A opportunities. DU capitalized more efficiently, had better goaltending, and is a much smarter team.
- BC is an incredibly stupid team. But they battled. They really did battle. D was actually decent IMO especially considering the rebounds they had to deal with.
- Hemming is the best guy on the ice pretty much every game. He's a top 10 NCAA player and should be in the Hobey discussion.
- Faceoffs still suck because Greg Brown is still the coach and he sucks.
- Cloutier also battled. Still looks like he's unsure of where he is. The rebounds were crazy, even DU announcers pointed it out. .870 save percentage isn't going to cut it.
- BC is 1-3, this season is OVAH but I wouldn't rule out a split after what I saw tonight.
- Good depth at forward but still too many passengers. Half of these guys play an entire game and you forget they are on the team.
- BC may need to find some sort of enforcer BEHIND the bench.
- It's bad.

I know a lot of you had questioned putting Henriquez in last weekend vs SCSU but I didn't mind it. I think the rotation needs to continue especially considering that this season is now a lost cause.

What is the status of Greg Brown's gd contract?

You are never as good as you think and never as bad as you look. Denver is good BC was right there at the end of two, but that penalty at the end of the period was just brutal. Sondreal had a SH clean break and did not do much with the shot. Resendes just can't help himself, count on one bad penalty a game. They are playing better together, the dots are a problem for sure, but against really good teams they are at a real disadvantage. A win tonight and it will be a successful road trip.

Absolutely stole a tie there. This team is dreadful. Officials were on another planet all weekend long.

35% faceoff win % tonight. Had the lead for exactly 0 seconds on the weekend and haven't had a lead since the first SCSU game ended (185 consecutive minutes).

Launch Greg Brown to Mars.

I guess there is some cheese on the moon. Something to build on. I don't think even a win would keep some of the boo birds from complaining. DU fans must really be upset tying such a dreadful team.

Vanhanen involved in both goals, whacking the puck in mid air for goal #1, and a quick spin and shot that led to Stiga’s rebound goal with 46 seconds left in game.
Hopefully this provides a confidence boost.. faceoffs are a problem and we need to recruit playmaking centers.
Teddy Mutryn was on the ice with the extra attacker in the final minute. Either he or Casey was involved in a good forecheck or two…now we need these guys to turn pucks over and score some goals. Sondreal is struggling at center, and not quick enough to set up Pellietier on the wing. Ideally, Casey or Teddy M can take over center at that spot down the road.
Anyone know status of Murnieks injury? he was hurt the entire second half of last season in OHL and now out again..He came in as a center, but Brown placed him on left wing vs. SCSU..
Eagles pick up an official tie in the NPI, but will also gain a strength of schedule factor as Denver will likely be an NCAA tournament team.

For those folks above who do not understand the NPI (formerly Pairwise) formula-the strength of schedule is weighted at 75% and win percentage is 25%. A tie is weighted as half a win, and half a loss. Since this was a road half win, BC would pick up a .6 factor (half of 1.2) for the tie, plus a large kick from quality opponent. Road wins are weighted higher (1.2) than a home win (.8).

Kept it abbreviated last night as I had to get to bed for early morning skate. First, I am going to again point out how bad the officiating was all weekend, IDK if the massive amounts of second-hand weed smoke in Denver had the refs high all weekend but they were on another planet and had a strange obsession with cross-checking penalties and making up phantom calls. Denver had 10 PPs this weekend and BC had 4. BC killed 90% of them and was 5 for 5 last night so that's a bright spot. I will note that the major call on #16 was 100% correct on the ice and their review confirmed it. Dangerous hit and no one argued it on the DU side, glad Stiga is ok.

Cloutier .875 on the weekend. Not good enough, obviously. He did not get better in the offseason. We do also have Korec and he's a senior in a lost season so give him some crease time. As far goals against, one was a snipe from the corner and I have no idea why he's down on a knee there but he was. Great shot sure but if this is what Mike Ayers is teaching our goalies, put him on Elon's rocket to Mars with Greg Brown. The second one was more interesting, clearly there was no interference and he got knocked over easily. Brown foolishly challenged it and of course lost the challenge and the timeout. He did have a great save moving left to right to rob DU after their first goal on a bad turnover high in the D Zone and a big save with 80 seconds left in the first on a clean faceoff win for DU (of course).

For all you folks talking NPI they are currently 46th. There's only 57 teams. I generally frown upon looking at it this early but obviously it's not good and they will be haunted by this start all year. Playoffstatus gives them a 1% chance of making the NCAA tournament, and that includes their chances of winning the autobid. This is the new era of BC Hockey. We had a golden era under York. Now we have the chit Brown era.

SOG were skewed as BC had an 8-0 shot advantage after the DU major expired. BC had 4 SOG in the 26-minute span between that PP expiring and DU's second goal with about 6 mins left in the second period. Sad. Need guys that can drive the offense especially with bad goaltending and green defense.

MVH and Hemming are huge bright spots. Dean is now doing all these cute between the legs backhand no-look passes (to the other team), he is doing Perreault/Hagens passing but doesn't have the hands for it. Simplify things! Dean and Conmy did both hit posts I believe in the first period.

Honestly the defense is hard to assess without seeing them in person (and there's little chance I plan on doing that this year). Forwards... too many passengers. Mutryns... Sondreal... Conmy... ZZZZZZZ. Conmy is basically our Travis Banga (for all you UNH friends). LOVE Will Vote and all his craftiness. Obviously Stiga had the big rebound goal but for 59 minutes... zzzz. Line 1 is great and you have to leave them together IMO but after that need to find some combos. Conmy is a PP guy and should be on 3rd line or lower at a program like BC.

38% faceoff win percentage this weekend. 47th nationally. We all know it's been bad for several seasons and this has been an issue Greg Brown is apparently unable or unwilling to fix. A major reason why he should be fired.

BOB won a road ACC game yesterday! WOW.

Playoff status group does not understand the NPI formula. I sent them a question on this subject last year as their numerical projection percentage differed from USCHO/CHN by about 20 percentage points at one point. They admitted they did not know the NCAA NPI with any precision, and simply used numbers to try to simulate what they were seeing at USCHO etc.

Dean L was 8 wins 14 losses on faceoffs, and Sondreal was 2 w/ 11 L. Only Stiga was average at 6-6.

Conmy does many things well, has speed, toughness and a hard shot. His problem is he thinks he can wind up and pick a 3 inch corner of a net. As a result, he misses tons of nets, and because he “waits” a split second to wind up & telegraph, and the defenders block his shots.
Last night he attempted 6 shots and 4 were either blocked or missed the net. Many of his shots are in prime scoring areas around the slot.

Pelletier has been quiet, absent his two goals in pre-season game vs MSU. I note that he played with our top players on the PP.
I would drop Conmy down and move Pelletier up to see if we can generate more goals from line two.
The loss of Will Moore looms large, as he could win some faceoffs and was a good passer at Center.

probably not fair but when I saw Korec 2 years ago I figured he was your starter for next 2 years
Admittedly I did not see his brief appearances last year but think its time to give him a shot
