The Housekeeper and the Professor is the best book about math I've ever read. ;) Well, it's not really about math - but there is a LOT of math. A housekeeper works for a former math professor whose short term memory only lasts 80 minutes. Interesting concept, and I enjoyed the book.

If you haven't seen it, watch the movie "Memento." Guy searches for his wife's killer, but his memory only goes up to a certain point in his life. After that, he cannot make new memories at all.

have seen it, and loved it. :)

Finished The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard Morais, about an Indian boy who becomes a chef. Honestly, I felt like the book could've been longer and I would have enjoyed it just as much, if not more. I haven't seen the movie, but look forward to seeing it.

Also read the sequel to Devil Wears Prada and it was like most sequels - slightly disappointing. Same kind of fluffly storyline (what I expected), but it felt like she tried too hard at the end to give it a happy ending. Not as charming as the first one.

Re: Book Thread number ?

Finally ordered up Machiavelli's book. I kind of feel embarrassed I don't own it yet. Look forward to it.

Re: Book Thread number ?

Is 25 pages in too soon to give up on a book? I started By the Lake by John McGahern, and just could not get into it. Seems like all dialogue, and the way they speak is confusing. It sounded so promising! He's the Irish Chekov! It's about the inner lives of people in a small village! But... ugh.

The Irish Chekov, does that mean he's better at drunkenly navigating his wessel?

Recent reads

Enduring Courage: Ace Pilot Eddie Rickenbacker and the Dawn of the Age of Speed by John F. Ross An excellent biography of World War One hero Eddie Rickenbacker. It tells of his growing up poor especially after the death of his father. His involvement in the early age of automobiles as a mechanic and designer and his evolution as a race car mechanic and race car driver. Eventually becoming one of the best drivers in the World. It covers how he became the Ace of Aces as the US's top fighter pilot in the War. His after the war career as a racetrack and airline owner is glossed over fairly quickly and they end the story with the tale of him being trapped at sea in the Pacific during WWII after their plane is forced to ditch.

Pegasus Bridge by Stephen E. Ambrose This early pre Band of Brothers work from Ambrose tells the story of British glider troops who went in the day before the D-Day landings to secure bridges in Normandy to keep German reinforcements from rushing to the Normandy Beaches. It details the training and actions of the company that night on how their actions and the inaction of the German command enabled them to hold the bridge.

Junkyard Dogs by Craig Johnson The Latest Walt Longmire book finds him investigating a lost thumb which has turned up. Along the way he gets involved in a property dispute among neighbors where the participants start ending up dead. OK read.

Vulcan's Forge by Jack Du Brul The first Phillip Mercer novel by DuBrul finds Mercer being called to help the daughter of an old friend who is the sole survivor of a ship sinking near Hawaii. The mystery intensifies when he finds out her father died several years ago. As he investigates why the ship was sunk he finds that it may tie in with a Japanese billionaire who wants Hawaii to secede from the United States and may be backed by the Russians. OK read.

The Charlemagne Pursuit by Steve Berry The latest Cotton Malone book finds him trapped in a dangerous game. Finally allowed to look at the classified report which reveals how his submarine captain father died. He finds he didn't die on a routine training mission but on a top secret sub in the Antarctic. Teamed up with 2 German sisters whose father was on the sub and are engaged in a unhealthy quest to win his fortune he travels to the Antarctic to find what was so special about the mission and to find out what really happened to his father. Ok read.

No Fortunate Son by Brad Taylor Someone has kidnapped powerful US politician’s spouses and children seemingly done by Islamist terrorists. The Taskforce is tasked to find them. Recently released from Taskforce. Pike Logan is called to look into the disappearance of Kurt Hale’s niece as a favor. When he finds out that Hale’s niece was on a date with the vice president’s son the action comes together as he begins to unravel the threads and get to the bottom of the kidnapping. Good read.

Deadline by John Sandford That F’n flowers is back in another John Sandford novel. This case starts with him investigating missing dogs in the hill country. In typical Flowers fashion the bodies start to drop and he ends up investigating a massive fraud at the local school district who are killing witnesses and co-conspirators to cover up their crimes. Good read. Interesting that this book runs concurrently with Field of Prey the last Davenport novel and events in that book are referenced throughout.

Bleeding Orange: Fifty Years of Blind Referees, Screaming Fans, Beasts of the East, and Syracuse Basketball by Jim Boeheim, Jack McCallum Why did I pick up this book at the library? I’m not really sure I don’t like basketball and I don’t like Syracuse University Basketball but spending a lot of time in Syracuse and going to college near Syracuse during the Billy Owens and Derrick Coleman years and seeing how the city seems to live and die by this basketball team I was intrigued. It was an okay read of Boeheim’s early life and then how he made the SU team as a walk on played with Dave Bing and never left, becoming an assistant and then the head coach for the last 39 years. His stories of the making and play of the Big East and his relationships with John Thompson, Jim Calhoun etc. Along with his analysis of the players that played for him over the years was interesting. He doesn’t really deal a whole lot with some of the controversies around the program except for the Bernie Fine situation. OK read.

Private India (Private #8) by James Patterson, Ashwin Sanghi The latest Private book takes us to Mumbai where a troubled investigator still grieving the loss of his wife and son is heading up Private's investigation of a serial killer. As he starts to find the threads that link the murders together he finds his boss Jack Morgan in Mumbai and has to bow out of the case, on the surface when Jack is a suspect. Typical Private back and forth, I do enjoy the different settings around the world.

Hell Is Empty by Craig Johnson The 7th Walt Longmire book deals primarily with a fugitive chase. During a prisoner exchange the prisoners escape killing several FBI agents in the process. Taking some hostages they flee across the mountains of Wyoming as a major snowstorm approaches. Walk takes off on his own after them with various local, state and federal authorities in his wake. He is helped along the way by Virgil White Buffalo who may be seeking vengeance against one of the escapee’s who killed his grandson. As he struggles he wonder what is real and what is not as he hallucinates and has visions along the way. Good read I’ve liked most of the other Longmire books better.

Enduring Courage: Ace Pilot Eddie Rickenbacker and the Dawn of the Age of Speed by John F. Ross

If you have not already read it, I would recommend The Aviators: Eddie Rickenbacker, Jimmy Doolittle, Charles Lindbergh, and the Epic Age of Flight by Winston Groom. While I am sure it is not as in depth as a biography on just one person, I enjoyed it and the author did a very good job of contrasting and comparing, and the overlap of the three aviators lives.

Anyway, Recent Reads:

When Paris Went Dark: The City of Light Under German Occupation, 1940-1944 by Ronald C. Rosbottom - Non-fiction: A historical account of Paris under German occupation during WWII. The book expels some myths and really took a good hard look at what went on in Paris during that time. It was an interesting subject matter but I thought the author could have been more logical in the order of his writing. He seemed to jump forward and back in time at his whim. Also no book needs as many footnotes as this one had. If that many things are important then just include them in the normal text! 4 out of 5 stars.

The White and the Gold: The French Regime in Canada by Thomas B. Costain - Non-Fiction: This is the first in a series about the French in Canada. A highly detailed history of the French in Canada and northern portion of what would become America. I was amazed that the author could find so much detail about the people who lived in Canada back then. The subject matter held my interest and I really enjoyed learning about history that I knew very little of. I was amazed to find out how visious the Iroquois were! Much like the previous book, the book was disjointed. Also the author failed to provide dates for much of the book. So I had no idea what year or even time period he was refering to. It was a real detriment to the overall value of the book. 3 out of 5 stars.

The Bitter Road to Freedom: A New History of the Liberation of Europe by William I. Hitchcock - Non-Fiction: This book was about the Allies liberation of Europe during WWII. The whole book looked at the liberation from the point of view of the populace that was being liberated and not from the view of the liberators. The beginning of the book was excellent. The author dealt with the liberation of France, Belgium, and the Netherlands which was very interesting. However, once the author started to write about the liberation of Germany it turned into a typical book about the concentration camps. I have read about those many times before and this book had nothing knew in it so I quickly became bored. I would give the first half of the book 5 out of 5 stars but the second half 1 out of 5 stars. Overall I give it 3 out of 5 stars.

I'm almost done with a biography by George Marshall. So far is it fascinating.

Re: Book Thread number ?

A new Harper Lee book is to be released on July 14. She wrote the book, Go Set a Watchman, before writing To Kill A Mockingbird. It focused on an adult Scout Finch, when her publisher read it, they told Ms. Lee to go back and write a story about that woman's childhood, that it might make a more interesting story. We won't know if that's true or not until July, but writing that book about Scout Finch's childhood was certainly a good call by her publisher.

Recent Reads This includes about 20 e-books that I got to read on my cruise many of which were very short and disappointing.

Fodor's Caribbean 2012 by Fodor's Travel Publications Inc. Got this before my Caribbean cruise to check out the things to do in St Thomas, Puerto Rico, St Maarten and Tortola. Like that the maps included were the cruise boats docked and the sights in near proximity so I knew whether to do an excursion or could see the sights on my own.

The Paris Vendetta by Steve Berry The latest Cotton Malone book finds him at odds with his friend Hernik Thorvaldson. Henrik seeks Cotton’s aid to get revenge on the man who is responsible for the murder of his son. Yet Cotton is told by the US government that they need the man’s assistance to stop a terror attach that group he is associated with the Paris Club is planning. Typical Berry adventure with a quest for an ancient secret, Napoleon’s along with non-stop action. OK read but a lot like the Venetian Betrayal in that a cabal of evil business men is seeking to exploit the world and cause havoc.

The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown Dan Brown’s follow up to the Da Vinci Code finds Robert Langdon summoned to Washington DC by his friend to give a lecture to the Smithsonian. Once he gets there he finds out that he has been deceived and someone has kidnapped his friend and summoned Langdon to have Langdon decipher the masonic pyramid and lead him to the treasure. Others are involved as well, can Langdon solve the riddle and save his friend. OK read some interesting facts about Washington DC that I didn’t know.

This follows him as he tries to track down the other agent who testified against him. After dispatching the man, with some help of some Nazi’s including Adolph Hitlers supposed son, which seems out of place in the story. His thoughts of revenge turn to Cotton.

The Tudor Plot by Steve Berry This e-book goes back to when Cotton was an agent. He is sent to London to meet with the Queen who believes there may be a plot to kill the Prince of Wales and his son. The 1st Victim by Tami Hoag More of a teaser for the upcoming Kovac and Liska story than a standalone story. It starts of New Year’s Day with a young woman found dead by the side of the road and their search to find out her identity.

Re: Book Thread number ?

The rest of the regular sized books

Jack Johnson, Rebel Sojourner: Boxing in the Shadow of the Global Color Line by Theresa Runstedtler I was disappointed by this book I thought it was a biography of Jack Johnson except there are long periods where the author doesn’t mention his name but goes on about the racial tensions and bigotry of the era. It tells of Johnson battles against prejudice, racial tension rioting getting fights in the various places where Johnson lived and fought, US, Britain, Australia and France.

Re: Book Thread number ?

Finished Hank Greenberg: Hero of Heroes. Pretty good, but kind of a long read. I didn't know that much about him, so it was interesting read more - he was a pretty interesting guy. He had ideas for baseball that got implemented much, much later (like interleague play) and was suggested for commissioner. He also missed more time due to the war than any other player (4 years) in his prime.

Re: Book Thread number ?

Finished The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult - really liked it. It's about a woman who befriends an elderly man who admits to her that he was a guard in the SS, and he asks her to help him die. The story covers what he did (from different perspectives) and the after effects - it was very entertaining - not in a fluffy way, but it definitely drew me in. Once I started, I couldn't stop reading it. I kind of wish she hadn't written the "love interest" piece into it, though.
