Bad Times At The El Royale:

A couple strangers' lives intersect at a has-been hotel. This is like Tarantino, Aronofsky, and Nolan all had a weird lovechild, and Stone was the priest that christened the child. Eccentric, convoluted, yet very interesting movie. If all those directors had actually taken part in this movie, the sum would be less than the individual roles, however I still really liked it.

Basically, sit back and enjoy the twists and unorthodox storytelling manner.

I don't know if anyone else watched Alex Gibney's latest documentary, The Inventor: Out For Blood in Silicon Valley on HBO. I found it interesting, but aggravating at the same time.

The half dozen documentaries or so that I've seen of Gibney's I've really liked, so I went in expecting to enjoy this one. The talking head interviews were great, and the subject matter was interesting, but man I got tired of the endless closeup shots of Holmes staring unblinking into the camera with that creepy look of hers, or the shots of the little vials of blood.

All in all it was worth a watch, but from an editing standpoint I would have made the movie a half hour shorter and cut out most of those shots.

Yeah with all of the craziness that went on in that story, the need to focus so strongly on her voice and appearance kind of trivializes it a bit. I recommend the book "Bad Blood", as it gets to the story without the visual pieces, and is written by the WSJ writer who broke the story.

Girlfriend and I started watching it last night. It was infuriating, but not for the same reason. ;)

I don't know the background of some of the interviewees, but they came off as knowing the truth but kept going along with it. The documentary practically lionized those people when they should be in jail with Holmes. That p-ssed me off. I can't believe it took that long for a scientist or engineer to stop that madness. You're supposed to have ethics and seek the truth. That you understood what was going on and just watched it makes you as much of a con as her.

El Royale sucked. It COULD have been great...but it wasnt. The story was lame, the unorthodox storytelling was gimmicky and unneeded and all of the acting was wasted.

I didn't fault the employees. They were just the working stiffs, going paycheck to paycheck. Whenever one of them raised a question, they were quickly told they didn't know what they were talking about and they needed to get back and do their job. They were being monitored, and they quickly figured it out. They were forced to sign onerous confidentiality agreements. They were threatened by lawyers. I think it's remarkable some of them actually came forward.

To me, the bad guys in the story are the people who enabled Holmes. Whether it's Kissinger, George Schultz, Mattis, Bill Clinton, David Bois, or all the other old white men who basically reached into their skulls and removed their brains because a cute 19 year old blonde whispered in their ear that she had figured out a medical miracle. They're the ones who gave her the patina of respectability, and together with Holmes and her slimy boyfriend are the ones to blame for this.

Respectfully, if my company was defrauding investors or committing a crime and I knew they were lying about it, I would speak up and I would hope you’d do the same.

Whistleblower laws are in place for a reason. You’re forever ****ing yourself to publicly report. But at least you get a cut IINM.

You can also drop a Manila envelope in a mailbox.

Oh you will love it...it tries to be something so important and avante garde yet it is just another "telling the same story from 5 different angles" crap we have seen since the early 1990's. It so badly wants to be a Tarantino film but it isnt nearly clever enough.

It is right up your alley...lots of "look how different we can be" without being different and all with lots of actors being over the top trying to make the lack of story have some real depth that just isnt there.
