Bitch About the Bracket Here

The regionals just flat out favor Denver, North Dakota/Minnesota and all the Eastern teams. There are so many great barns being passed over in the midwest it's sad, which would absolutely carry attendance.

MECCA in Milwaukee, Resch Center in Green Bay, Cincinnati, Toledo, Van Andel in Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Chicago (where DePaul plays) Cleveland...even Indy. ALL those plaves would have great attendance.

The NCAA has essentially ignored the upper midwest/Great Lakes region for quite a while. It is mystifying to me.
None of them bid, likely because of the NCAA's minimum guarantee.

For all those Albany haters out there, here are the attendance figures for the first 2 days of the regionals:
Worcester: 4018
Loveland: 4217 (which had Denver playing only an hour away from home)
Sioux Falls: 5114 (which had UND somewhat close)
ALBANY: 6584 (and that’s without any local teams).

Let’s see how many fans make it to the 4 sites this weekend.
I had no skin in the game with BC out but still drove up from Staten Island to Albany because I like the tournament. Enjoyed my upstate day trip which included lunch at my favorite eatery in New Paltz, where I once lived. Glad Albany drew well.

Fair if they didnt bid on it, and I get it...but then the NCAA gets stuck keeping the same places that just reinforce the regional bias issues.

The question becomes I suppose what guarentees does the NCAA place for sites to bid?

The NCAA guarantees only that the site will have the honor of hosting the tournament and paying the NCAA lots of money in the process.

And of the reverse, outside of the $ what does the host site need to guarentee?
The host needs to guarantee unfettered access to the arena for not only the tournament dates, but for several days preceding the games. The host has to provide hotel accommodations for several NCAA representatives. The host has to guarantee adequate hotel accommodations for the four teams plus the numerous officials required to carry out the games. The host has to guarantee production facilities for ESPN and other media, plus the replay technology required for a tournament game.

This is not an exhaustive list.

Most of that is negligible from a technical standpoint. The hardest one is likely hotels, but if you have sufficiently large ones nearby you can get by with 3 as teams can double up if needed provided they're sufficiently separated.

There's also a minimum capacity requirement, but again not super hard to meet for the places we're talking about.

The money guarantee to the NCAA is the biggest hurdle, especially out west, as that must be paid whether they cover it with ticket sales or not, and you have no idea what tv windows espn will stick you with. There's also no guarantee the local team will make it, and this isn't basketball with its virtual guarantee for sellouts.

I think this is a link to an information packet for host schools looking to bid on future regionals. $100,000 fee, plus you have to pay a bunch of costs (maybe up to $1 million, on average) for which you might get full reimbursement if you sell enough tickets. If you can cover the $100,000, plus the $1 million in average expenses, you get to split the extra with the NCAA, 75/25. I'll let you guess who gets the 75%.
