Biggest Collapse

Look who started the thread........

What does that have to do with anything? Im all for others adding to the thread. Its not my fault Oswego can't produce in the SUNYACs. Other teams have seen bigger comebacks, upsets, and or collapses however you want to look at it. Oswego and RIT just happen to be the easy ones to point out from a Plattsburgh perspective. One could argue the 00 and 01 NCAA Playoffs when Plattsburgh upset Middlebury a collapse/upset. If you don't like it come up with another one......thats what the thread is for. I may be pretty knowledgeable about PSU hockey, but I made the thread to learn more, or remember more, great hockey moments.

Re: Biggest Collapse

The 2009 Plattsburgh team has to go down as one of the best teams to not win the title.

That team was absolutely stacked.

Re: Biggest Collapse

Someone needs to get some Western flavor in here, so I'll get it started. Let's not forget about the 2009-10 Adrian Bulldogs. For two years the messege boards where jammed with Adrian apologists proclaiming this team as the anointed ones. Two years of 'screw jobs' by the NCAA left them on the outside looking in. Fast forward to March of 2010. The MCHA has an AQ now and Adrian gets in. Three years of playing together leads to a 77-8-1 record and a spot in the dance, only to be one and done.

I like it just fine and thanks for making my point. Awesome post, really.

Re: Biggest Collapse

1990, #1 ranked RIT and the 1st seed in the ECAC West tournament loses to #8 seed Oswego State 7-5 in their own barn.

1991, Geneseo, who spent much of the year ranked #1 or #2 loses on home ice ( by a score of 6-2) to an Oswego team that finished their regular season under .500. The loss, coupled with an early exit from the ECAC tournament the following week turned a magical season into a nightmare as the Ice Knights were passed over come NCAA selection time even though they had spent much of the year ranked in the top 2.

That and the 2001 RIT team. Difference, of course, is that the 2001 Plattsburgh team was a good contender themselves...

...whereas the 2009 Neumann team would probably have to go down as the opposite: one of the least talented teams to actually win the title. For that reason alone, I have to say that the 2009 Plattsburgh team suffered the bigger "collapse" (although it was really one player who "collapsed").

It's tough to peg that Neumann team as the "least talented". Certainly one of the most surprising national champions we have ever had, that's for sure.

They had something like 13 or 14 seniors on that team and they just got hot at the right time and had an incredible goaltending stretch from Ross Mackinnon.

Mike Hedden was a monster on that squad.

Re: Biggest Collapse

Totally agree. That team had to be the best team, imho., since the 2001 team that won it all. They may arguably have not been the most talented team in Cards history, but definitely the most well-rounded and competitive. I think coach would even agree with me.

I dissagree....you are talking about a team that was outshot in the playoffs by a 2 to 1 margin. Neumann was in just about every game they played in. The outshot their opponents in 6 of their 9 losses and the 3 losses that they were outshot in, were still fairly close. In Plattsburghs 5 losses, they were outshot in everyone that year including a 12 to 35 against Middlebury. In 2001 RIT had only 5 games all season decided by 2 or fewer goals, they were freakesh. Plattsburgh in 2009 had 12 of their games decided by 2 or fewer goals. They were not blowing out teams like RIT. RIT averaged almost 8 goals a game, 44 shots a game, and a 44% power play. Plattsburgh in 2001 rode the back of Sundberg....if it wasn't for Nik, they don't make it out of Middlebury. Neumann played a good team game. MacKinnon was good, but he was no Sundberg. He had a lot more help in those games then Sundberg had in 2001. I still think if Hince's head was in the game, and not on playing pro, Plattsburgh wins that game. Plattsburgh also wasn't undefeated and had just beat Neumann a few weeks prior 8-2. The stage was much higher in 2001 then 2009.

Don't get me wrong, Neumann over Plattsburgh was a huge upset. But that 2009 team was nothing like the 2001 RIT squad who just smashed through DIII that year. Bournazakis brothers, Galloway, Hahn, HEuverman, Tarantino....

2001 RIT > 2009 Plattsburgh
2009 Neumann > 2001 Plattsburgh
