Big Ten in the NCAA Tournament

So far the Big Ten schools are slaughtering their opponents in scoring.
We'll see if Michigan continues the scoring rout later tonight!

Combined 25-3 in the first three games. None of it will matter in the end unless the conference can finally bring home a championship though.

My questions is if Michigan scores as much too, wouldn't it be rather unprecedented for one conference to have four teams dominate the first games like this?

I'm pretty sure it would be a record breaking first round for a conference and I don't think it would be close. Only 1 team in NCAA tourney history has scored in double figures, so UMn's 9 goals is tied for the 2nd most ever. So I'd guess the 8 goals scored by both PSU and OSU rank Top 5 all-time, or close to it. In all my time following college hockey it's rare to see more than one team score so many goals at all, much less 3 times and all by teams from the same conference.

Edit - I read that about the 9 goals being tied for the 2nd most at Gophersports. I was suspicious about it and went and checked and found several games with 12 or 13 goals scored, and I believe that list is just a list of title games. But none after 1961 with more than 9 goals, in just title games. So it may be a stat that only includes since the tournament got expanded to 16 teams? I'm not sure. So disregard that part of my remarks. I'll do some digging and figure out conclusively what the record is.

2nd Edit - I should be embarrassed, I should have remembered that the Gophers scored 14 in a 14-1 beat down of BC in 1954 in the semi-finals.

I found that the most goals scored by any one team was 30, in 7 games, by BU in 1990. Hard to beat that playing only 4 games, but it's not impossible.

Ok, I only checked 2 seasons so far, the first with a 16 team field, 2003, and then I jumped ahead to 2005 remembering that was the year the WCHA got 4 teams into the Frozen Four figuring that would be the most likely record breaking season for a single conference. 5 teams to start, scored 16 in the first round, 16 in the 2nd, 14 in the semis and 5 in the title game for a total of 51 goals.

B1G so far has already got over half that with only 3 games played so far. But I doubt there will be such high scoring games as the competition gets tougher going forward.

Michigan running away with it now. It's a shame they put two Big Ten teams in the same regional so next game either Penn State or Michigan's season will end.
I guess they didn't want the possibility of an all Big Ten Frozen Four.

I went to the All-WCHA FF in Columbus in 2005 (?). As a Hockey East fan, it sucked.

What an absolute teabagging by the Big Ten in the first round.

I can’t recall such a non-competitive first round of games (I’m not going back to the 1950’s).

I remember predicting that all-WCHA Frozen Four. Got a lot of hate both after making the prediction, and even after it played out just as I predicted it, lol. Yeah, me thinks the NCAA does all it can to make sure that won't happen again. And it's better when it's not dominated by a single conference. It's nice going forward for the fans of that conference, for bragging rights, but it's not good for the sport.

Not our fault our opponents weren't stronger.
we'll see how well Minnesota and Ohio State does in their next games.
Michigan vs Penn State doesn't count being both Big Ten teams and one has to lose.

Mission accomplished! I've got Quinnipiac eliminating Michigan in the semi (upset!) with the Gophers prevailing over the Bobcats in the final.

Of course this could be all wrong.

I wouldn't mind a Michigan - Ohio State matchup in the FF. I feel it wouldn't be as lopsided as the last time we played each other. Most likely very intense!

As I said in the BU thread. This tournament has sucked ass so far. Here’s hoping we get some compelling Regional Finals.

Kudos to the B1G in the Regional Semifinals. That was the most dominant NCAA Tournament performance by a conference as a whole in probably 60 years.
